Oh, and someone asked (sorry, I'm having a hard time focusing today...even quoting the stuff I want to answer I still diongoed stuff)

Now we have yet another spelling!!!

Show off!!!!

....yes....even in a drug fuelled haze Tom is smarter than most.....

No, you have to have been in band to understand people like Tom ... just because they can use big words doesn't necessarily mean they have a high level of intelligence ... I knew guys like him :lol:

I do think Tom is having a bit of tequila ... or maybe someone stole his phone ... he has a different weekend demeanor ... Tom? Any comments?

make sure you are not lifting your shoulders when you are doing things like putting dishes away in cabinets, playing the flute, reaching for things, etc.

I'm the flute player ... when I'm having muscle aches it's VERY tough to hold that flute. Some days I wish I played oboe or clarinet! I play anyway and just suck it up ...

We just bought a house. It's a commercial property, but was used as residential up till now. It's a beautiful old Victorian that a lady has lived in her whole married life ... she's in her 80's. Her husband's family owned it before them. It's in the commercial area downtown where we live ... don't know what we are going to do with it, but it was a REALLY GOOD deal, so we couldn't pass it up.

Thanks.

Adam is talking about moving his company into the upstairs, but that has to be okay with his brother (it would be a long drive to work for his brother).

We can't decide whether to rent out the downstairs, or to open a business. They're revitalizing our downtown, so now would be a good time to open one. B) I have some ideas ....

Anyway, it has three entrances, so it could be split up into three separate units. It's exciting and scary at the same time ... I've never had a commercial property, only residential.

It actually would make a GREAT B&B, but I don't know that I'm up to running one. Susie, want to move to Ohio and run a B&B? It has a yard! It's only 81 degrees here today! ;) ;)

Is it close enough for you to use the kitchen while remodeling yours?

Potentially toxic conversation is today sometime.

I'm getting ready to leave right now. :D

I'm feeling pretty good about it...yesterday would've been a whole 'nother story...too dongo'd out... BUT...I'm on the mend now...I *think* I'll be alright. :)

My ex-best friend is gonna be there though.

She wasnt supportive when I went through my break-up....she was happy about it!!

PLUS....I was in the midst of serious poisoning and could not deal with her unsupportiveness during THE roughest time of my life. I was dongo'd out everyday at that time...still eating junk, still smoking and still having drinks on the weekends.

Heck...I needed EXTRA drinks at that time....and she was telling me to get over it right then and there...that it was for the best...that she wasnt happy we were together to begin with.

Anyways....that....plus a whole lot of additional drama caused me to call the whole friendship OFF....and I've never attempted a reconciliation...and I'm still not interested. I think instinctively I just KNEW what I needed to avoid because of the unneeded stress and turmoil.

So yeah....she will be there....another toxic person. <_<

BUT....I'm fearless and I'm still going. :D

This party is mostly family and close friends....an afternoon get-together. Its never small...this is a big Hispanic family.

Later on tonight there will be another party with a different crowd (friends/aquaintances)....at a hotel...DJ/dancing. I might go...might not....depends on how this first gathering goes.

Gotta test the waters first. ;)

Is it close enough for you to use the kitchen while remodeling yours?

It's down the street ... I guess we could but the kitchen leaves a lot to be desired ... the only thing it has right now is a sink and a little counter space. Too far for the little kids to walk alone ... and with my lack of appetite, I would never feel like eating!

So, no, we won't use the kitchen.

We'll close on it next month.

Good luck tonight Rachel. I think you'll be just fine.

You're very strong, and have an amazing ability to see things as they really are. Not no one gonna mess with you anymore. ;)

Just go and have a great time--you've moved on and remember that living well (and happily) is the best revenge B);):D

I miss the bay ssooo bad. I use to live on Geary and Levensworth in the tenderloin. The good old days. I lived in those Oakwood apartment studios for 3 months. My job paid for the rent so that was good.

I want to move back to the bay, being sick made me have to move back home. I missed my family anyway and a lot of family functions so I guess coming home is good to. Miss West Portal, Haight, Castro, Ocean Beach, all of it. Hate this darn gone illness.

I miss Fat Slice pizza on Castro and El Toreador mexican food on west portal the most though. :(

I also miss my old job at the Steakhouse in South City too.

Rachel, have fun at the party. You will do so much better than last time you saw them just because you are doing so much better!!

No toxic conversations ... just brush them off.

And our Rinne lived in the Haight! Ahhhh plenty of good times there. Little cluster of pubs in Upper Haight for starters.

....

I lived in the bay area from 1978 - 1985, in 1984 I lived in the Haight. I used to go to a bar called Nightbreak, Chris Isaak was a regular performer there. :)

Thanks for that link Rinne. :D

I don't use a microwave anymore. We got rid of ours 2-4 years ago.....I forget.

It's good to have the info though. :)

Andrea, always good to have information. :) I'm glad to have an ally.:lol:

I haven't had one for over ten years and even then I rarely used it. I don't like what it does to the texture of food, told you I was a cook. I hadn't used one for years when I learned that there were health risks associated with them.

It actually would make a GREAT B&B, but I don't know that I'm up to running one. Susie, want to move to Ohio and run a B&B? It has a yard! It's only 81 degrees here today! ;) ;)

That sounds exciting, would any of your ideas have to do with decorating? A gluten free B&B would be wonderful but yes what a lot of energy it would take. :)

.....

Gotta test the waters first. ;)

I hope the waters are fine. :)

I'm sorry about the biting bug, I was wondering if it could be a flea?

I also miss my old job at the Steakhouse in South City too.

So many fabulous places to eat there, there was a place in the Mission we used to go for burritos, can't remember the name but there was always a line up out the door.

I worked at Greens.

Hi, Patti--I'm doing okay right now; thanks for asking. I've got the diarrhea under better control since I stopped taking my multivitamin, but it's still there.

I'm thinking I need to do a rotation diet; I'm taking two trips in July, though, where eating will be difficult, so I'll probably wait until after that. I'm one of those who never eats out (I haven't eaten out in 2.5 years), so traveling is always difficult for me, but I manage. It's become harder, though, with all my food restrictions!

Hi, Rachel--I hope you have a good time tonight and that the toxic-ness stays away!

Hi, Andrea and Rinne--Okay, now I'm paranoid! I use a microwave *all* the time....something to think about....

 well hmmmm.....DOES sound like a promising offer! so you're saying the dingos could frolic in the yard? we could call it Yellow Dog Bed and Breakfast. ;) Or the Dingo DewDrop Inn. (name change to The Dongo'd Out Inn on days when we're feeling particularly rubbish.)

Um, but thank you, no, I will help you shop and decorate it, clean the place up, but NOT run the B&B....sheesh, people that run those places never have any sleep, privacy, or time off. And that ain't the life for me!

My thoughts exactly!

I'm throwing around the idea of a consignment shop. That's what's missing in this little downtown. ;)

Then again, I could just rent it out and collect the rent check every month ... that's the least amount of work! I just think it's a neat old house and that people in town deserve to see the inside of it (I never refuse a tour of my own house for that reason ... don't show private areas of the home, though). That's why I don't want to just lease it to an attorney or a mortgage company, or something like that.

We already have a tea shop, a coffee shop, a florist, a train shop (really, LOL), even a donut shop!

I'm open to suggestions!

I survived one day without almond butter but it wasn't easy.:lol::( I see no difference. Harumph.

Somehow I got doingy on adding my 2cents on this when I 1st saw it. (I'm staying away from dongo'd - do as u wish, but the thoughts of passersby *will* be anatomically influenced)

It's time like these I wish I'd crossed town limits a month earlier.

I wouldn't need to try to describe the way I was, the way I could rarely think well, the assorted physical ailments that I can now only describe in past tense.

Even tho I wouldn't have written as many words in the month that I now do in a weekend, you would have all been witnesses to this wildly drastic resurrection. (Not to toe the line on blasphemy - I just need to stress the extent) Eh screw that, the word isn't reserved for theology. And it is quite appropriate.

Anyone who witnessed the change would never stop an elimination test at 3 days again.

I know damn well what the prevailing wisdom is and have ALSO had successful tests where in only 3 days (1 even w/ anti-candida) I knew I never ever again wanted to eat the tested food.

So I have no explanation as to why this one took more than a week. I know I was desperate enough to give it a few more days.

But there is NO question that at day3 I would've said "bah - I guess soy isn't a problem" and still have been miserable, still searching for a way out.

I re-iterate: NO question that day3 data turned out entirely wrong! (this time)

Even day5 or so. People far more experienced than I would say "there's more to his story" & "it doesn't work that way".

EVERY SINGLE ONE of the other things I eliminated I knew the answer w/in 3 days.

And there's no more to the story than soy-free so apparently it *CAN* "work that way".

For those of you who believe in fate, maybe I landed here specifically to write THIS post.

Maybe somehow *only* the last piece of the puzzle isn't clear until a week and a half.

I use words now I haven't said in a decade. Last month, literally at least half the time, the checkout clerk, in just a minute's interaction might rightfully speculate that I was borderline retarded or mentally ill. And on the bad days I'm dreading even that bit of human interaction, as it's not much fun to hear the words and unsure of what the sentence means.

That got a little overstated, at the end there, for just last month. But a quizzical look from the clerk after my mumbled mono-syllabic response WAS last month.

Sheesh I've taken two ph calls during this rant and have no idea how long I've gone. Hehe

If any of u current Testers have even just an inkling that maybe all the above is true (and it is), isn't it worth extending the test period??

What if u find out in '09 that u could've avoided 2 *more* bad years if only u went ahead and skipped a few extra days of whatever food?

[/RANT]

Hi Everyone-

Patti- Sorry about the Philosophy. I LOVE their shower gel. In the fall they make a spiced pumpkin or pumpkin pie that smells SO good. Poopy on tocopherol acetate. <_<

I'm sure I've dongoed everything I wanted to say, but I'll give it a shot.

Carla- You could definitely do a consignment shop! That would be so cool. I LOVE them and the good thing is if you're the owner, you can work when you want and hire someone else to work weekends  Or a cool jewelry/craft/local shop. I always wanted to open a bookstore cafe.

All this talk of the Bay Area is making me miss it! I was there 1999-2002 and lived on Fulton and 33rd (outer richmond= the foggiest part of the city). So much fun. The haight and the Fillmore District were my favorites (especially kabuki Spa ).

Rachel- I "broke up" with my best friend back in 95 and it was the BEST thing I ever did. Talk about toxicity  She wanted to run my life! I'm not good with ANYONE telling me what to do (makes me do the exact opposite :P ). I still see her at events of mutual friends sometimes. I'm just polite and distant. Oh- the stories I could tell you!

Cool and polite. Or Susie's suggestion:Any chance you could take the Guadalupe along, just in case you get scared? and go hide? :D

I am so tired today (we need a yawn emoticon). But I did make it to my 3 1/2 year old niece's first recital. I laughed so hard I cried. She was SUCH a ham. At one point she pulled her tutu up around her neck and did this coy little pose. Totally knew she was stealig the show. At one point she started doing her own interpretive dance. My stomach hurt. You guys would have died. Nothing cuter than 3-5 year olds at a recital.

One even picked her nose on stage and wiped it on her PARTNER'S tutu

Well- it seems pretty clear with all the people who do/have lived in the bay Area that the Rachelville Reunion must take place up in Napa or Sonoma. My first choice is we take over the town and spas of calistoga :D

Last one in the mud baths an exploding egg!

We already have a used bookstore downtown, so that's out, but it would be fun if you could compete with the big guys ... seems that a used bookstore could do okay, but a new might be like "The Shop Around the Corner" in "You've Got Mail"!

I'm thinking furniture, antiques, local art, etc.

Cool and polite. Or Susie's suggestion:Any chance you could take the Guadalupe along, just in case you get scared? and go hide? :D

Yeah, I'm sure Rachel wants to be in the middle of the room, naked, with her head sticking out of a spiceship!

Me, too, isn't it time for this herx to be over yet???? I certainly couldn't cook tonight ... I was even too weak to go out with the rest of the family, so they're bringing back something for me. I TOLD Adam I wanted a sea bass with mango chutney and some garlic mashed potatoes from Bonefish ... but I think I'm getting queso from Moe's ... have to eat that at home anyway because their chips have cc (though I've been known to take a couple Glutenease and eat them anyway ... for our lurkers - I don't have celiac disease ... just gluten intolerance ... don't do that with celiac disease!!).

Those recitals are SO fun! Morgan danced for years ... it was a blast. A couple of the others did for a year or two, but Morgan did for the longest. She takes ballet class in college, too, which is fun for her because she took dance at IU as a little kid years ago!

When they get to the age where they're competing, it's EXPENSIVE!!! :o Each costume is over $100 ... and they usually have several! And this is on top of paying for classes! :o

The bugger story ...:lol::lol: ... way too funny!!!

Oh, and I'm game for flying out west to a spa! Count me in!

Re: microwaves, Hans Hertel & linked article.

Open Original Shared Link

I respectfully disagree.

We've talked about microwaves before and I know that people have come to rely on the convenience of them but at what price?

I must re-respectfully double-dog-re-disagree.

Pistols at dawn?

I'll even (hehe) finish the article if someone would care to debate. It could be in a dedicated thread.

There may truly be a point to the concept of a microwave oven detrimentally denaturing components of food.

But so far, that article ain't it, imnsho.

I see too much faulty logic, bait&switch data, leaps of faith, mis-applied physics buzzwords etc.

And one (so far) illogical assumption jumping from a near-boundry condition to a general inference on the entirety of the subject. And phrased in a manner all-too-common in pseudo-science - namely the original academic meaning of the phrase "beg the question".

Open Original Shared Link

An argument that improperly assumes as true the very point the speaker is trying to argue for is said in formal logic to "beg the question."

Quote from article after the mother's milk & blood anecdotes(no hard data).

"Does it not therefore follow that this form of heating does, indeed, do 'something different' to the substances being heated? "

Yes - it does not follow.

You just can't take the most unique food in the history of the planet and claim everything that happens to it will also happen to a piece of chicken, popcorn or a brussells sprout.

Mother's milk? No other food is even close to it in uniqueness. Cross-species milk isn't as close as it seems at 1st glance imo.

And blood? Why are we even talking about non-foods. (Buffy! Faith! Come quick!)

Not to mention that blood is also incredibly specialized and unique, and it's mistake to apply any findings on unique substances to other substances.

Further down is this quote:

"There is extensive scientific literature concerning the hazardous effects of direct microwave radiation on living systems,"

Doesn't this just mean it's bad to climb IN the microwave and have someone turn it on?

Key words: direct & living.

My microwave's contents are dead, and if there *were* an effect after I ate it, it's an indirect effect.

Talk of the "sun's pulsed direct current" is goosepoop too. Pulsing a direct current means it's not direct anymore. It's what goes on inside a DC-to-AC converter.

I got more but I'm tired and no one wants to read all the way to here anyway. :P

I rinse out the tube and the bag (because I use coffee), then I hang them upside down in the shower so they drain out and dry completely (I take them out if someone showers so they don't get wet again).

make sure you are not lifting your shoulders when you are doing things like putting dishes away in cabinets, playing the flute, reaching for things, etc.

...

It's a vicious circle. One thing hurts, you unconsciously use different muscles as a way of protecting it, then they hurt worse than the first thing, and pretty soon you can't get out of the pain circle, and everything in the area hurts!

Yes, I do think I tend to lift my shoulders and I definitely have pain cycles because of the compensation thing. Must be more aware of shoulders. No problem today though. :P Couldn't lift my shoulder if I wanted to...hurts WAY too much.

A number of warnings have been made public, but have been barely noticed. For example, Young Families, the Minnesota Extension Service of the university of Minnesota, published the following in 1989:

"Although microwaves heat food quickly, they are not recommended for heating a baby's bottle. The bottle may seem cool to the touch, but the liquid inside may become extremely hot and could burn the baby's mouth and throat. Also, the buildup of steam in a closed container, such as a baby bottle, could cause it to explode.

Heating the bottle in a microwave can cause slight changes in the milk. In infant formulas, there may be a loss of some vitamins. In expressed breast milk, some protective properties may be destroyed. Warming a bottle by holding it under tap water, or by setting it in a bowl of warm water, then testing it on your wrist before feeding may take a few minutes longer, but it is much safer."

Dr. Lita Lee of Hawaii reported in the December 9, 1989 Lancet:

"Microwaving baby formulas converted certain trans-amino acids into their synthetic cis-isomers. Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans-fatty acids, are not biologically active. Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is known to be neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys). It's bad enough that many babies are not nursed, but now they are given fake milk (baby formula) made even more toxic via microwaving."

It has literally been months since I have not eaten nuts on a daily basis. They are my 'go to' food when I know I need to eat something and nothing appeals to me or I don't have the energy to cook or I am travelling.

Not wanting this issue to be clear I have muddied the waters with cup of coffee about as thick as mud.:lol:

I must re-respectfully double-dog-re-disagree.

Pistols at dawn?

:lol::lol: :lol:

As Leonard Cohen says, "I will decide for myself what is rotten and what is fresh" and anything that turns chicken into rubber and bread into glue is rotten to me. :P

As for the science, everyone who puts something out there is putting out an opinion and who is unbiased?

Who profits from microwaves?

Do you know how many restaurants there are that do not have kitchens, just microwaves? I don't.

We are told teflon is safe also, but how safe is something heated above medium heat that kills birds?

Seriously, I think it is awesome that you have seen such an incredible difference by cutting out soy. :)

At this point I am not eating gluten, dairy, soy (other than soy lecithin in chocolate), nightshades, caffeine ( mostly  ) and all grains. I have seen improvements through limiting my diet but thanks to Rachel I am beginning to understand that some of it may not be the foods but the mold.

If cutting out nuts makes a big difference then it would seem mold is an issue for me, that is what I am hoping to find out.

Welcome to the forum, @RDB7918393! For some folks, gluten reactions are delayed but I would not think symptoms delayed  of a week or more out would be due to a gluten reaction. Twenty four hours or so but not 7-14 days. I would suspect something else is going on. Eating out is well-known to be the number one sabotaging activity of the gluten-free life style.

I was diagnosed with Celiac about 10 months ago after having on and off morning stomach cramping and loose stool that only occurred like once a month. So I don’t get immediate reactions…more if build up reactions. I do my best to be gluten free but hard when on vacation and going to restaurants to fully trust cross contamination problems. I find that if I’m cross contaminated, I don’t get a reaction til about a week or two after. The reaction is stomach cramping morning only with flaky stool. Does anyone else have such a delayed reaction like a week or two after being glutened? Or should I go for more testing to see what’s going on.

Good morning, I saw that a lot of people were asking wether Polly-O products are gluten free. I just called them and all their cheeses are gluten free! Just wanted to let anyone know.    if you still want you can give them a call.

Your approach is spot-on—trusting reliable sources like Mayo Clinic and sticking to a gluten-free diet that works for you is the best way to navigate all the noise out there. The claim that rice and corn contain forms of gluten harmful to celiacs is indeed a misconception. While these grains do contain proteins that may technically be referred to as "glutens" in a broader scientific sense, they are structurally and functionally different from the gliadin found in wheat, which is the specific protein harmful to those with celiac disease. Scientific research overwhelmingly supports the safety of non-contaminated rice and corn for celiacs unless there’s a separate sensitivity or allergy involved. Some opinion pieces or alternative health sources may blur the lines by conflating these proteins, which can cause unnecessary worry. You're absolutely correct to focus on the distinction between scientifically validated information and anecdotal claims. It's also important to note that some people with celiac disease may develop sensitivities to other grains over time, but this is individual and not a universal rule. If you’re asymptomatic and thriving on a diet that includes certified gluten-free products with rice and corn, there’s no reason to change what’s clearly working for you. The internet is a breeding ground for well-meaning but misguided advice, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Your instinct to validate claims through reliable research is exactly the right way to go. Keep enjoying your gluten-free meals, stick with trusted certifications, and don’t feel pressured to adopt restrictive diets that aren’t backed by science or tailored to your specific needs. Happy New Year to you too!
