Dear Kassandra,

I am so sorry to hear you are sick! :( The flu is miserable. I always had to suffer through it and colds, because I cannot stand the horrid taste of the medicines! I always take Sambucol for a cold. It does have corn syrup in it.

However, instead of getting that horrible cough that never went away and getting broncchitis, the cold went away completely in a week! :) Now, I take it every single time I get a cold. Sambucol is black elderberry extract, which boosts immunity by as much as 300 percent. This stuff is great! I recommend it to everyone!

Endocrinologists may be able to help with the periods. Their specialty is hormones. I saw one once, and she was very nice. She also was the only doctor who did not write crap about me. Unfortunately, she could not help me back then.

Your hair falling out may be a thyroid issue. Over and underactive thyroids can cause hair to come out more than normal. If I had to guess, I would say your adrenals are probably exhausted as well. This especially is likely if you need caffeine and sugar to get through a day. Eliminating sugar, caffeine, refined carbohydrates, and transfats helps dramatically with this, although sometimes additional support with supplements is needed.

Dear Judy,

You are one of us! You always will be! Everyone in Rachelville has their special qualities and place. That is what makes the town so wonderful! Speaking of, I wonder how Claire, our favorite granola girl is. I miss hearing from her, too!

Shelly also has not been on in a while. She was going to get her home tested the last I read. Mold could be a serious problem, because she runs a daycare in her home. That is a major health risk. It would be good to see a post from her, Lisa, Bev, and our Susie Q also! Donna seems to be gone more lately as well.

How encouraging to hear the oxylates were the trouble! :o:huh::) Who would have expected that? I need to read more about that. Doctors of course are so out of it. They think they know everything because they went to school for so many years. Apparently, they did not learn as much as they needed to heal people.

The largest epidemic is actually the lack of common sense in the medical community. Results are often disappointing. Patients are told they are just crazy if the doctors cannot find what is wrong right away. All of their fancy, expensive equipment and blood tests do not hold a candle to pure intellect. Maybe one day they will learn that is why computers are called artificial intelligence! ;)

Sincerely,

Jin

... I think I have an ear infection, but I am allergic to all antibiotics! Grr! SO, I am riding this one out....miserably. :(

The reason we also think it's my p gland is because I lose SO much hair in a day...it must be hormone related. Ideas?

Kassandra

Kassandra, sorry for the trouble. Here's a remedy you might try that helps me: salt in boiled water, cooled to lukewarm or room temp. Get a 10 CC syringe at the pharmacy (they are big ones) without the needle. Tip your head back and squirt the saline into your nose. Takes a little practice and getting used to. Do this twice a day. It is great for congestion and sinus, and should help with the ear--well the eustachian tubes anyway.

I agree that the hair loss could be thyroid related. It is related to celiac but I am not sure of the specifics of why. Also it can be hormone related. My hairdresser said she sees it in people who have too high of progesterone. I suspect my severe hair loss 2 years ago was related to estrogen/progesterone balance being off.

Rinne, the bars sound wonderful. Are you in Australia? If so, sometimes those make their way up here to China.

Judy, yep this is a great place.

I keep up reading everyone's updates...just don't take the time to respond to everything. Jin, you are amazing!!!

Hooray! I'm so excited! Today I found a grain mill I can use here. The machine takes about a cup and a half of grain or whatever (dry), and makes a nice fine flour in under 2 minutes. They are usually used for the Chinese medicine shops to grind their medicine into powders. Cost me $45 for the medium size one.

Now I can do sorgham, sweet (sticky) rice, buckwheat, and maybe some bean flours. I have been able to find the grains here, but not the flour. Sometimes can even find organic grains. Sticky rice flour is only available in open bins and I am too afraid of cross contamination to buy it!

Also, made some chocolate cookies today that were excellent. Made with rice milk that we made ourselves, plus vinegar to make "sour milk." Oil, no margarine or butter. No one would ever know these were gluten-free.

dlp252 Apprentice

Hello everyone! Reading along, but not much energy to post lately. :(

No Rinne...no photos, lol. I tried yesterday, but they just didn't come out well. :P

When are you supposed to get your test results back? In a couple of weeks? I know the neurotransmitter situation might have to do with the autoimmunity Rachel was discussing. Once you get your results, that will help determine your sleep issues a little more. At least you were doing better lately.

Probably still a week or so more. I just got the "receipt" back from the lab, so they've received my tests. I'm glad I requested a receipt because it lists specifically what they will test for: Cortisol, melatonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, glycine, GABA, glutamate, phenylethylamine, histamine, creatinine. So they should probably have the results by the end of this week, then my doctor's office will contact me for an appointment to discuss the results.

Are you toes the same, or different today? Mine need painted. I was trying to make little leaf stencils to paint them yesterday for Mabon. It is the fall equinox celebration. Unfortunately, my stencils never came to be. I could not find that little cutting tool I needed for it. I am sure it is around somewhere!

Same. I'll keep this for another week or so.

Donna seems to be gone more lately as well.

I've been going through some weird trippy thing which I can't seem to pull out of...kind of like a blue funk. I may cut back on the ALA and see if that snaps me out of it.

Also, made some chocolate cookies today that were excellent. Made with rice milk that we made ourselves, plus vinegar to make "sour milk." Oil, no margarine or butter. No one would ever know these were gluten-free.

I am just awed by all this, lol.

I feel like we haven't touched base in forever! I see that you're just not feeling up to a lot of posting, I will keep a good thought for you as you get back this latest round of testing.

I just dosen't seem right for Smiley Spice to have to be in such a funk  We need to get you pulled out of this.

Stupid ALA, or whatever is causing this :D;)

Hello all,

I am sick with the flu of some sorts and almost everything I try to take has gluten, soy or dairy!!! I was going to go to my Dr. because I think I have an ear infection, but I am allergic to all antibiotics! Grr! SO, I am riding this one out....miserably. :(

On another topic, does anyone know if going to an endocrinologist would be helpful for my crazy periods? They deal with pituitary glands and that's what controls your hormones. I think an endo is a great idea. You should definately do it.

I lost a lot of hair when I was sickest with the Lyme. In fact, the new stuff is growing in so much healthier, that now that the new growth is 5 inches long, I had to cut off about 3 inches because it was starting to look funny. I still have about two or three more inches of bad stuff to get rid of, but I didn't want it above my shoulders.

With all the various symptoms you are suffering, a Lyme test would not be a bad idea ... and a heavy metals test. It appears something is messing with your whole system. Yeah, your hormones are out of whack, but why? Your thyroid may be out of whack, too, but why?

I know when we're chronically ill all this stuff starts to seem normal, but it's not.

I'm with Donna, not up to posting, but I wanted to address this. This new med for the bartonella is really kicking my butt. Adam's out of town all this week (in Dallas) and all next week (in Vegas). My friends have been offering for months to bring over meals ... I'm finally taking them up on it. Our kitchen gets torn out next week.

All my symptoms that have lingered are worsening ... GI, cognitive ... but oddly enough, the past two nights my insomnia has been doing better. Of course, sleeping and herxing kind of go together.

....But, I guess I wanted to appear normal B) .........Aside from this minor setback I have really been feeling better and having more energy. I'm not 100% yet, but I feel like I'll be there sooner than later.

Wanting to appear normal has been my downfall too. :( I am pretty much over it now, I've been gluten free for nearly 15 months though.

It is so great that you are feeling close to %100, I'm sure you'll get there. :)

Here's a link that you all might find useful. It sounds corny, but is an interesting blend of acupuncture points and some of the brain mechanisms found useful for forms of therapy like EMDR (helps with trauma).

Thanks for the link, I have heard about this and I've heard good things, these days I find myself willing to explore all sorts of corniness and weirdness. :)

That sounds fantastic Rinne!!!!! I'm so excited for you! Can't wait to try those when they hit the states.

Thank you Andrea and thank you for keeping me in the loop about how you and your family are doing. I was so glad to receive the updates, it made me feel that even though I wasn't here I was still included.

Dear Rinne,

We are all so glad to have you back! Welcome home! Everyone was like "Where is Rinne?" All of us could not wait to hear something from or about you. Having one of our residents return is a big deal. Heck, we might even have a holiday! Speaking of, we should have had one on Andrea's birthday the other day!

What wonderful news! :) Feel free to brag! This is huge! Wahoo, Rinne Bars in the celebratory yurt! :P We knew they would be a huge hit! When they get to the U.S., Rachelville residents will be first in line!

Did you write that poem yourself? It is beautiful! I love to write poetry as well. Basic iambic pentameter is more of my style. I have a think about making everything rhyme. If I do not have everything in mine rhyme, it throws off my rhythmn.

.....

Hi Jin, yes I did write the poem and thank you for finding it beautiful. I love your posts and was so glad to find you continuing your work as Rachelville's premier columnist.

Carla,

I am so reluctant to get tested for Lyme!!!;) I don't know why, I think if there is one more thing wrong with me...I'll croak! I know I'd need to go through IGeneX, but what if my doctor thinks I'm crazy? (Well, I already know he thinks that!) Would it be worth going straight to an LLMD? And spending more money??!!!! AHHHH!!!! This all gets so expensive! My hair has been falling out since I was anemic, but now that I'm not anemic anymore, they don't get it. Also, I do have thick hair, so the doctors don't find it a cause for concern. (Except the fact that if I don't clean my bathroom, it's covered in hair in just ONE day!) I have had my thyroid levels checked many times, and it is always normal!

The sinuses thing, I am kind of already doing with an all natural saline solution thing, but I don't get what you do once you "snort" the solution in? I know...TMI.

Jin,

I guess I should research adrenal exhaustion. I am not as tired as I was a few weeks ago, but I still don't have the energy of a 17 year old. The thought of going out on the weekends is TIRING! I do look to sugar for energy, but not caffeine because it never does anything for me. (Mmmm, coffee does sound really good though! :P)

Sometimes I just want to not think about any of this stuff and get on with my life!! We are also considering going to a surgeon at Cedars Sinai about my back because it is so bad. No doctors know what to do about that and...well, it's all so stressful!!! So, the thought of another doctor is like blah!

Again, thanks for all the ideas.

Hi rinne, good to see you too!

And hello to Judy!

Hi Patti, thanks for the comments!

Andrea too!

This is just a drive by post, I had a few questions:

Jin, I caught the tail end of some of your posts talking about Oregano Oil being caustic internally, did somebody have a problem with taking oregano oil??

And I think it's mftchn who is taking the detox baths?? I apologize if I am getting you confused with someone else. I know there was some discussion about Donna's epsom salt baths vs. baking soda baths- I was wondering what the verdict was. Has anyone heard of using hydrogen peroxide as a deteox bath?

Donna, I am so sorry you are in a funk- and you are not alone! Please be good to yourself and know we are here when you are feeling more like yourself and ready to post.

Carla, hang in there! I'm glad your neighbors are pitching in with meals while Adam is away? Are the kids there too to check on you? I hope this passes quickly for you.

Is it just me, or does it seem there has been an influx of people to this board who are struggling with so much other than just celiac/gluten intolerance??

Oh, and about the wanting to be/feel normal with all this chronic illness crap, I struggled with that myself for a very LONG time. Really in the last few years I've been able to let that go and what a difference it has made.

edit- forgot to add I finally found a neti pot. I'm going to use it today and see if it makes a difference.

I'm so happy for you....and soooo jealous that I wasnt one of the ones enjoying the bars! :P

Thanks Rachel, I don't know that I got it all but the information about candida and celiac is just mind blowing when you think about it, it also makes a whole lot of sense that people who have never had a problem with gluten develop celiac. Wow.

Yeah...I always think theres alot to that . Infections are known to trigger autoimmune disease so it would definately make sense.

Hi Julie. So nice to you, hope you are feeling better soon.

leaves falling everywhere,

you are not even a moment away.

I asked the doctor about lyme, parasites and candida. He explained that they are treating any candida that gets stirred up with supplements they are giving me. I also drink a big glass of Aqua Flora while the IV is dripping. He also said that they always treat metals first. Then they treat symptoms as they appear for lyme. He said there is no accurate test for it so they are aware that it can be hidden by the heavy metal toxicity and treat it if it shows up. He also said I have no symptoms which would lead him to believe I had parasites. But, if they showed up they would then treat those as well.

Glad you're feeling better Ami! :)

I'll re-post the Klinghardt "Triad of Detoxification" so you can understand what happens with the infections when you start chelation. I'm glad your Dr. is aware that they can come out and play but dont let things get too out of hand. I dont want you to end up with a bigger problem.

The Klinghardt Axiom and the Triad of Detoxification:

By experience I found the following to be true: each unresolved psycho-emotional conflict or each unresolved past trauma causes the body to lose the ability to successfully recognize and excrete toxic substances. Also each entanglement or limiting connection with another family member, unhealed relationships and unhealthy, non-life affirmative attitudes limit the organisms ability to detoxify itself. In fact, the type of retained metal or other toxin and the body compartment, where it is stored, can be predicted with a high degree of certainty by knowing what type of unresolved psycho- emotional conflict is present in a client and at what age the associated event occurred.

For each unresolved psychological issue there is an equal amount of toxins stored in the body.

When the patient starts to effectively detoxify on the physical level, repressed emotional material moves from the unconscious to the more superficial subconscious part of the brain. Instead of feeling better from the lessened toxin burden, the patient will often start to experience unpleasant inner states of being, e.g. tension, anxiety, sadness or anger.

This is commonly mistaken as a side-effect of the medications used for detoxification or as an unspecified

You know how crazy I get with the Humic acid, and coal, and minerals!!!! :)

Okay Im done with the Humic acid, fluvic acid stuff, I just saw trace minerals and freaked out!

Peace love and no more TOXIC CHEMICALS!

Christina,

I'm not sure where you go the info about fulvic acid being toxic?? I have only read the opposite of that.

I know alot of people take fulvic acid in their detox program. The minerals are crucial because without them our bodies hold onto metals and we do not detox. Our bodies require minerals. Most of us are deficient in these minerals....they are not available in our food/soil the way they once were.

The people that I know of who are now doing well or have recovered used Trace Minerals containing fulvic acid in their program.

The NDF I took did not contain fulvic acid but my Trace Minerals do.

There is a ton of info. stating the importance of trace minerals.

Fulvic Acid

As a powerful detoxifier and antioxidant capable of transporting molecules heavier than itself, fulvic acid binds with toxic heavy metals, as well as other pollutants, and carries them out of the body. As well as its detoxifying properties, fulvic acid makes cell walls more permeable, meaning that your body is better able to absorb and utilize nutrients. Minerals that interact with fulvic acid also have increased bioavailability and are more easily assimilated.

Fulvic acid is easy to take since it is a mild-tasting liquid supplement. Common dosage is one to two ounces per day. If you are just starting out, you may prefer to start with a quarter ounce per day to avoid common detox side effects such as headache or fatigue.

Properties of Fulvic Acid

Organic fulvic acid is a naturally occurring humic extract. Created within the soil by micro-organisms, it induces complex photosynthesis reactions in plants by transporting important nutrients and minerals into the plants. This process enables the plant to circulate complex carbohydrate sugars throughout for nourishment. Some of these sugars return to the root system, which in turn provides nourishment to the originating micro-organisms in the soil. In this way, the whole process repeats itself.

As an existing element in the earth, our ancestors received this humic substance naturally through their diet. Since farming practices are focused on pest-free, high yield crops for profit, soil is now repeatedly doused in pesticides, and nitrate fertilizers. These practices deplete micro-organisms from the soil, leaving crops sterile and nutrient deficient. Adding fulvic acid to your diet can provide powerful benefits to your health and well-being.

Open Original Shared Link

When I did a search I didnt find anything to say it could be harmful.

I did read this though...about chlorine and fulvic acid.

Chlorine reacts negatively when mixed with humic substances especially fulvic acid, causing the production of deadly carcinogenic THMs and MX.

The water treatment industry has known about this for many years, and because of this they try to remove humic substances from culinary water before treating it with chlorine. This situation is very well documented. Chlorine is the deadly culprit, not the humic substances.

Many companies selling fulvic and humic-based products do not know about this problem, and may be extracting their health supplements using chlorinated water. This presents a dangerous situation to public health. Furthermore, it is important that health supplements NOT be mixed or taken with culinary water that could be chlorinated, or with juices reconstituted with chlorinated water.

Could this have been your problem with the fulvic acid??

I couldnt find anything to support that it could cause toxicity in the body by itself.

On another topic, does anyone know if going to an endocrinologist would be helpful for my crazy periods? They deal with pituitary glands and that's what controls your hormones. I was wondering if anyone knows about this at all? The reason we also think it's my p gland is because I lose SO much hair in a day...it must be hormone related. Ideas?

I had a few Endocrinologists at the beginning of my illness...at that time I had been diagnosed with Graves Disease. I used to lose a ton of hair in a day and my hormones were totally whacked out. This continued long after my thyroid was stabilized. Things are still not "normal" but they are better.

For me...all of this....including the Graves Disease was triggered by what was going on inside my body...the metals and the infections that I wasnt aware of at the time. The Endorinologist couldnt fix anything for me because he didnt know why it was happeneing.

If you test normal for thyroid function and the other tests they give....they will not do anything to treat you...and they have no idea why its happening.

You could see an endocrinologist and get some testing but I wouldnt expect them to get to the root of your problmes...because they wont.

Forgot to say LOVE THE POEM rinne, thanks for posting it!!!!

Hi Rachel, thanks for the kind words and the love  Right back at ya!

I also forgot to say thanks for the post a couple days ago directing me to the oxalate thread. I did read it and I guess I am a little confused about it all, I think I need to research it more throughly. I guess I don't get how to incorporate it in with everything else.

Another thing I forgot to mention (I am just forgetting left and right, brain fog  ) is an additional thing that really stood out for me in the article on Candida and Carbohydrates you posted the link to was that eating high protein/low to no carb diets causing the red blood cells to stack, or "sticky blood". This was a red flag, ding, ding, ding, ah-ha, HELLO moment reading that since chronic angioedema has to do with the blood and cascading or stacking proteins in the blood- I am wondering if they are related situations. My angioedema actually became chronic after I went off of a long term high protein/low to no carb diet and I began to eat carbohydrates normally with all my meals.

So this is something I really want to learn more about and see if there is any connection.

I am don't think I could be in a worse mood.

Noglugirl - It was actually a doctor who recommended the peppermint tea because it is suppose to "relax" the digestive muscles. I will not be drinking that again.

The ginger does not seem to be a problem. I had a cup of ginger tea last night and was no worse than before it.

I WANT A NEW BODY.

I may cut back on the ALA and see if that snaps me out of it.

Could be the ALA. I've read warnings about taking it without a chelator. I know I've posted it a few times but I dont know whether you saw it or not.

Sources of sulfur such as alpha lipoic acid, MSM and garlic are helpful for protection against heavy metals in general and specifically useful in mercury toxicity. Alpha lipoic acid should not be used alone, as it only mobilizes mercury with a weak bond. Without additional chelators present, such as DMPS or DMSA, the mercury may just redistribute elsewhere in the body instead of being removed.

Be careful!!

Amy did not want me taking ALA by itself. I only just now started taking it along with the DMSA and the other detox supplements.

I feel like we haven't touched base in forever! I see that you're just not feeling up to a lot of posting, I will keep a good thought for you as you get back this latest round of testing.

Ditto!!

Thank you, Trents- are there any safe alternatives?

I agree with @trents, it's not typical for gluten exposure to cause symptoms as delayed as a week or two after ingestion. In most cases, reactions to gluten occur within hours to a few days, depending on individual sensitivity and how much gluten was consumed. The delayed symptoms you describe—stomach cramping in the mornings and flaky stool—might suggest that something else is contributing to your discomfort. Cross-contamination is a common challenge, especially when dining out, and it's great that you're doing your best to stay gluten-free. However, the inconsistency of your symptoms and the long delay between exposure and reaction could warrant further investigation. It's possible that another gastrointestinal condition, such as IBS, a food intolerance, or a reaction to something else in your diet, might be contributing to your symptoms. You might consider keeping a detailed food and symptom diary to identify potential patterns or triggers. Additionally, consulting your gastroenterologist could provide clarity. They may suggest testing to rule out other issues, such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), microscopic colitis, or other sensitivities. If you suspect cross-contamination is a significant issue, you could also ask for follow-up bloodwork (e.g., tTG-IgA) to check if your antibodies are elevated, which might indicate ongoing gluten exposure.

No cure so far, and a treatment might still be years away. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. This article may be helpful:

I'm not sure the article would be misleading, as it offers many different avenues to pursue for those with ongoing symptoms. The recommendation to keep a food diary and remove common food intolerance triggers would be a good way to discover issues with casein/milk, especially if you added that back to your diet after a couple of months and your symptoms returned. Many additional food intolerance issues can be permanent in some people.
