My then 4 year old started vomiting about every 3 or 4 days, just out of the blue. Having grown up allergic to wheat and knowing that it caused vomiting, fevers, seizures, and joint problems in me, I thought he probably had a wheat allergy. I took him to the allergist and his allergy test came back negative. The allergist wanted to blow me off about it, but I insisted that what/gluten was his problem. He argued and argued and finally I told him to just order the blood test. He told me would come back negative. (My 4 year old was 60 pounds and 45 inches tall, he definitely didn't have the failure to thrive.) He finally agreed and also ordered it for me. My bloodwork came back completely normal, but his came back positive for celiac. I started thinking about it, and my then 2 year old had never had a solid stool in his life. I asked the doctor to test him as well, and his also came back postive. My husband and his mother both have a lot of digestive problems, and I'm sure they both have it. My husband hasn't gotten the bloodwork done, but when he went off gluten for a month, he felt completely different. He chooses just to watch how much he eats. Having grown up allergic to wheat, it has been a fairly easy adjustment for us. And fortunately my kids love salads, and veggies and fruits, so it's not too difficult to follow.

Welcome to the board!

Good for you for being so assertive with your child's physician! Doctor's can be quite hard-headed, but your case illustrates that they certainly can be wrong, especially when it comes to celiac disease!

I'm glad your family is doing good and the adjustment is easy. Tell your husband to be careful. Even a little gluten is too much gluten, causing damage IF he has celiac. Welcome to the board!

Very helpful. Oh yes, I am quite fastidious about not falling off the diet. It's just that the list of things I must add to the restrictions seems to grow.

I know this post is old but was wondering if you ever resolved this. My son is in the same situation. Villi healed but gastritis / duodenitis remain and calprotectin elevated. Now testing for crohns which I am freaking out about.

I did a little research and one kind of aphthous ulcer (aka, canker sore) is the Herpetiform canker sore. It is well-known that celiac disease can cause a skin rash known as herpetiformis dermatitis. I can't help but wonder if there is a connection. Celiac disease is also listed in this article as a cause for canker sores: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/canker-sore/symptoms-causes/syc-20370615 Are you observing a strict gluten free diet? You might also look into reducing iodine consumption as that is known to help with herpetiformis dermatitis. Perhaps it will help with your canker sores as well.

Do you wear an M-95 mask left over from the pandemic when you handle flour? Do you eat out in restaurants? Do you take vitamins?
