Blood Result Number

Hello fellow silly-acks!

I have been recently diagonsed...I think. My blood results showed that the Iga (?) number was a 16. The paper showed anything below 11 was ok. Anything above 17 was bad. What is the average number? The doctor said I wasn't off the charts, but that I should start following a gluten-free diet so that I won't be bad later in life. I'm 35 now and my mom just got diagnosed also and she is 57.

If anyone knows about the diagnosed numbers and what it means to be positive, that would be helpful. You all sound like nice, helpful people.

Does anyone else miss beer? I know of the three breweries, but this summer, I'mm attempting my own brew!

Thanks,

Missy Frey

Ummm...I can only speak for myself but I had my first blood test at the same time they did the endoscopy/colonoscopy and my results were over 100. I guess when it's over 100 it just shows over 100 and not a specific number. so I guess I was off the charts. I'm surprised no one else responded

After a few months on a gluten free diet I am down to healthy normal levels

I haven't seen my test results. I'm going to request to see the lab work come Monday. I was told I had "mild" celiac. Anyway, it's been a month now and I feel better (no canker sores, almost no itching) in most ways (though the C is back with a vengeance - now starting to clear up on my new diet of slow cooked brown rice and veggies 24/7), other than the fatigue, which is taking a spell to get rid of.

OHHHHH that is what the Dr meant when he said I have a touch fo Celiac. I was so confused I thought that was like say well..... your a little bit pregnant ! I wonder what my numbers are now? I will have to ask them to give me a printout as well.

I would ask for a copy of your labwork and keep it with your own records. Did they run any other labwork other than IgA? Usually there is a whole panel of tests, but not all drs run them all. Usually it is recommended to have a endoscopy & biopsy to diagnose Celiac, but not all people are diagnosed that way, some are diagnosed by positive dietary response. It just depends on the dr.

I say stick with your diet and see how you feel. Did you have any symptoms before being tested or were you tested b/c your mother was diagnosed?

Welcome to the board. There are a bunch of great people here with tons of useful information.

I did have a endoscopy and a biopsy. I was admitted into the hospital for my symtops on my wedding night !! and they didn't know what was wrong with me. I didn't even want to put on my wedding dress on on the big day. What a gong show ! I think they did run other lab work but the specialest didn't recieve it so ( I am just reading the lab slip now ) it looks like he has ordered ( doc's writing is hard to read) anit -ttb and ab ? and serum iga ,,,, that make sense ? I will then be asking for copies from my GP so I have a better understanding of these things.

I guess this stuff is difficult to gage because it really depends on what your dr says is bad and as I read more and more that varies widely!

You were asking about my mom and no she wasn't aware of this disease but she did have problems with wheat ( I already have some yummy wheat free recopies ) but she did die of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma < if that is how you spell it. My family history of illness is a little scary. Her brother was just diagnosed with the cancer as well my cousin is on dialysis 3 days a week because lupus attacked his kidneys and my aunt on my fathers side is soon to be in palliative care for cancer as well. My dad has Diabetes . My niece has some sort of rash that happens with food but they can't figure out what it is and they went to the best specialist in Vancouver for children with food allergies and he said she wasn't allergic to anything ... yeah right .... she breaks out in hives after eating? So I talked to my brother last night but I didn't have to much to tell him because I am still in the info gathering stage.

I have been diagnosed with two things in the same week so my head is spinning with info ! I also was diagnosed with Poly Cystic ovaries as well. Between the two of these conditions one of them is making me loose my hair :( which I am not happy about and the Dr are not sure if there is at least one more condition happening here.

The hair loss could be from gluten in your hair products. Check for what protein and wheat germ in there. There are some other ones...alcohol maybe ... that could be from gluten.

wow...I hope you get some answers soon.

Thanks to all for writing back. I was worried no one had any clue as to what I was talking about. Here are my exact results:

IGG Gliadin/Gluten 16 High <11 is what they look for to not have Celiac

IGA Gliadin/Gluten <3 low

IGA Endomysial AB <5

so the doc said that I could go get a biopsy, but try gluten free for 2 weeks and see how you feel. Well, after a month of trying different foods and figuring out what I CAN eat, I have to say I feel better! I don't have a stomach ache everytime I eat. I do feel more energetic, and I've dropped 6 solid pounds! I guess I'll stick with this for a while...mostly because my mom hounds me to death about not cheating.

'

I'm very interested in people who write about itching. I have been scratching in my bikini area for over a year now. I've tried lotions and creams...I do shave and workout, but that wasn't it. Maybe it was the gluten. Now, the itching has subsided, but if I do have something with gluten, I itch. I never would have put the 2 &2 together. Amazing!

Thanks for all the info. Oh, for anyone who lives on LI, since I live to far out east, there are too many big chain natural food stores. They did open up a Wild by Nature which is great, but I went to Whole Foods in Jericho...OMG! A mecca of great things! Lots of gluten-free foods by their own baker. I found a gluten-free beer there too. Not too bad. Not Belgian, but drinkable.

Thanks!

Missy

Welcome to the forum, @Cathijean90! I went 13 years from the first laboratory evidence of celiac disease onset before I was diagnosed. But there were symptoms of celiac disease many years before that like a lot of gas. The first laboratory evidence was a rejected Red Cross blood donation because of elevated liver enzymes. They assume you have hepatitis if your liver enzymes are elevated. But I was checked for all varieties of hepatitis and that wasn't it. Liver enzymes continued to slowly creep up for another 13 years and my PCP tested me for a lot of stuff and it was all negative. He ran out of ideas. By that time, iron stores were dropping as was albumin and total protein. Finally, I took it upon myself to schedule an appointment with a GI doc and the first thing he did was test me for celiac disease. I was positive of course. After three months of gluten free eating the liver enzymes were back in normal range. That was back in about 1992. Your story and mine are more typical than not. I think the average time to diagnosis from the onset of symptoms and initial investigation into causes for symptom is about 10 years. Things are improving as there is more general awareness in the medical community about celiac disease than there used to be years ago. The risk of small bowel lymphoma in the celiac population is 4x that of the general population. That's the bad news is.  The good news is, it's still pretty rare as a whole. Yes, absolutely! You can expect substantial healing even after all these years if you begin to observe a strict gluten free diet. Take heart! But I have one question. What exactly did the paperwork from 15 years ago say about your having celiac disease? Was it a test result? Was it an official diagnosis? Can you share the specifics please? If you have any celiac blood antibody test results could you post them, along with the reference ranges for each test? Did you have an endoscopy/biopsy to confirm the blood test results?

I’ve just learned that I had been diagnosed with celiac and didn’t even know. I found it on paperwork from 15 years ago. No idea how this was missed by every doctor I’ve seen after the fact. I’m sitting here in tears because I have really awful symptoms that have been pushed off for years onto other medical conditions. My teeth are now ruined from vomiting, I have horrible rashes on my hands, I’ve lost a lot of weight, I’m always in pain, I haven’t had a period in about 8-9 months. I’m so scared. I have children and I saw it can cause cancer, infertility, heart and liver problems😭 I’ve been in my room crying for the last 20minutes praying. This going untreated for so long has me feeling like I’m ruined and it’s going to take me away from my babies. I found this site googling and I don’t know really what has me posting this besides wanting to hear from others that went a long time with symptoms but still didn’t know to quit gluten. I’m quitting today, I won’t touch gluten ever again and I’m making an appointment somewhere to get checked for everything that could be damaged. Is this an automatic sentence for cancer and heart/liver damage after all these symptoms and years? Is there still a good chance that quitting gluten and being proactive from here on out that I’ll be okay? That I could still heal myself and possibly have more children? Has anyone had it left untreated for this amount of time and not had cancer, heart, fertility issues or liver problems that couldn’t be fixed? I’m sure I sound insane but my anxiety is through the roof. I don’t wanna die 😭 I don’t want something taking me from my babies. I’d gladly take anyone’s advice or hear your story of how long you had it before being diagnosed and if you’re still okay?

Genetic testing cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease but it can be used to rule it out and also to establish the potential to develop celiac disease. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop it. To develop celiac disease when you have the genetic potential also requires some kind of trigger to turn the latent genes "on", as it were. The trigger can be a lot of things and is the big mystery component of the celiac disease puzzle at this point in time with regard to the state of our knowledge.  Your IGA serum score would seem to indicate you are not IGA deficient and your tTG-IGA score looks to be in the normal range but in the future please include the reference ranges for negative vs. positive because different labs used different reference ranges. There is no industry standard.

Since nearly 40% of the population have the genes for celiac disease, but only ~1% end up getting it, a genetic test will only tell you that it is possible that you could one day get celiac disease, it would not be able to tell whether you currently have it or not.
    • KDeL
so much to it.  the genetic testing will help if i don’t have it right? If theres no gene found then I definitely don’t have celiac?  I guess genetic testing, plus ruling out h.pylori, plus gluten challenge will be a good way to confirm yes or no for celiac.
