California Rolls

One of my favorite foods is a California roll. I usually have them when I have been sick and need something nutritious and light. I know the soy sauce is a big no no but what about the imitation crab? If they aren't safe what would be a good alternative? I am not a big sushi eater so I don't know all the different types of rolls and whether it is considered a no no to substitute.

maybe try using tofu or tuna instead of crab? cream cheese and cucumbers are really good in sushi also..

I know imitation crab has wheat as an ingredient

Fish sushi should be fine as long as they leave out the imitation stuff and the soy sauce (which isn't in most of it anyway)

I'd try salmon or tuna or even whitefish in a california roll.. personally those are the roll I am least likely to eat though.

I've been told there are imitation crabs that don't have wheat but I have yet to find them. The marinated eel has soy sauce, as do at least some brands of the orange fish roe. Spciy tuna filling could also have soy sauce depending on the chef. The rest should be fine.

I went to Whole Foods and picked up a package of their Sushi rolls and wheat flour was listed. Trader Joes however, says their veggie rolls are gluten-free but their soy sauce packet isn't. What I want to know is, is the Wasabi paste gluten-free? I want the wasabi with my veggie roll. ( I know, picky, picky). Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone ordered a veggie or California roll in a Japanese restaurant? I haven't set foot in any Oriental restaurant since going gluten-free 3 months ago. I miss them...

California rolls are fine - if and only if they're made with real crab. (Wild Oats uses real crab, but Trader Joe's uses fake krab.) Most wasabi is fine, but you have to check the label. Heck, most wasabi isn't entirely wasabi, and some of it as no real wasabi in it. I like the kind you mix yourself from a powder, so you can control the consistency. If you're particularly concerned, you can make your own sushi!

Well. I guess I could. Am doing great with stir frys! Maybe I should try to make gluten-free egg rolls and wontons. I wonder if there's already a website that sells that? Maybe I could quit work and become a gluten-free oriental supplier! (Just kidding).

Each time I've checked a wasabi it's been fine. I agree with using the powder amd mixing your own.

I have made california rolls before with real crab meat from the market. I guess when I get a craving I will make it myself. I have the sushi mat. Is it safe to assume the nori is ok?

No, Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     I take both of these and a B Complex.

what Benfotiamine should I take as Life Extension contains both Ben and TTFD.
    • knitty kitty
I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.

Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks
