Doctor's Report And Biopsy

Well, it took a while getting the right referral, but I finally had my biopsy done on Wednesday. Out of three dermatologists in my area here in Northern/Down East Maine, I ended up at one who actually new what dh is and could do the testing. And after seeing my share of bad doctors, I really lucked out. I had an appointment for Tuesday, but ended up calling the office on Monday because I had no breakout. Figures!

They were really nice about it and said that the doctor would rather see me when I had a breakout and to give a call when I did and they would fit me in. Next day, of course, I broke out and they took me in 15 minutes after I called. This doctor was polite, respectful and just wonderful in every way. He said that dh isn't common on the face, but not unknown and he took the biopsy behind my ear. He said that he didn't want to do it on the blister, because it was too mucked up there, or something to that effect. :D

I get my results in two weeks and he mentioned that even if it comes back negative, it doesn't mean that I don't have dh. It didn't really hurt much at all, just a little achey the day after and the cost for me was about that of a teeth-cleaning. My insurance picks up the bill for the lab and will possibly do so for the office visit, as well. So, for those of you who have had horrible experiences with doctors, my heart goes out to you, but if you aren't completely fed up and squashed in spirit, keep looking. There are some good ones out there!

Sorry about the smirky face on the folder next to my last post.

Guess I know how to use all the emoticons now!

glad you found a good Dr... you are right, many of us have horror stories of our experiences with the medical community... so welcome to the board

Thanks, Nisla. After being diagnosed as allergic to wheat and staying gluten-free for over a year, then going back to ingesting some gluten for two weeks in order to be "presenting" for my biopsy, I'm as convinced as I need to be. I don't count dapsone as an option for me...and other than avoiding gluten and iodine, I was wondering if there is a naturopathic remedy for making dh go away more quickly?

TIA!

I don't know of a specific naturopathic remedy, but if you have a good health food store near you that also sells supplements and homeopathic rememdies, you should be able to find something gluten-free to suit your needs... I use a homopathic line of products called Boiron for different things...

Egads, I'm going to be banned from the board for not knowing how to get my mongrel home computer to behave the way I want it to.

Sorry! This is the reply that I wanted to post under the quote!

Thanks again...we do have a good one here, I'm just not finding anything on the web except for very expensive Chinese medicine, and then selenium and vitamin E, which fail in double-blind tests. And I know that look when you ask about dh.

I'll give them a shot anyways.

The forms that vitamin and mineral supplements come in can be important. Bioavailability (i.e., how well they are absorbed) is often sacrificed for the sake of cost and shelf life. The vitamin or mineral you are targeting is always chemically combined with other elements to make them into a dispensable form (such as a powder, liquid or a pill) and to give them some chemical stability for shelf life.

Thank you so much! I will look for that.

@llisa, back then when you tried magnesium and it upset your tummy, I'm guessing you were using the most common form of magnesium found on store shelves, namely, magnesium oxide. It has a reputation for having a laxative effect. It is not very well absorbed and so draws a lot of water into the colon, just like the laxative known as milk of magnesia. I'm guessing if you would switch to the "glycinate" form of magnesium you would not have this problem. Magnesium glycinate is absorbed much better. If you can't find magnesium glycinate at your local stores, you can order gluten free brands of it off of Amazon.

I've tried magnesium before. Twice in 2 years. It really upset my stomach. And that was before this celiac disease diagnosis. (Finally, after 2 years of trying to find out what was wrong with me.) I have no idea how sensitive I am. When my stomach was upset, I'd go to my comfort foods: cream of wheat, cheese and crackers, scrambled eggs and toast...so, making myself worse by trying to feel better.  Just got results of biopsy yesterday, so today is first day of trying no gluten and reading that it can be hiding in vitamins and meds. So, I welcome ALL advice and personal experiences. No advice is too basic. I know nothing. Thank you!

Have you considered also supplementing with magnesium and zinc? We usually recommend these two as well. D3, Calcium and Magnesium all important for bone and nerve health.
