My very first post was about my reaction to gluten and whether anyone else reacted this way. I have had two positive blood tests and a negative biopsy...but proceeding with a celiac diagnosis. My reactions were happening every several months or longer. From 2002-2004 I did not get sick but still had tummy pain, gas etc. So far this year I have been sick 6 times and it seems to happen evry 2-3 weeks.

When I say sick :( it usually starts with just not feeling well and a tummy ache. Then I get these sulphur type burbs that last for several hours and leads to 'D' and throwing up. The really strange think is I will continue to throw up until the sulphur burps stop. I'm in the bathroom for about 3-4 hours and then I crash big time and then attack the Gatorade.

It was these very symptoms that lead the specialist to test me for celiac disease in the first place. Giardia tests have been negative.

I'm exaimining everything on my gluten-free list to make sure it's still gluten-free and keeping a journal of all I eat, take and do.

No one else really seems to have this reaction :huh: so if anyone out there does, would you let me know as I feel really isolated :( Thanks, L.A.

No. I don't have these reactions. Perhaps because my lab results are for a gluten sensitive diagnosis not celiac.

Perhaps you can try Pedialyte instead of the Gatorade for increasing your electrolytes. I do hope you find people that can relate or point you into a positive direction.

I think I just did my reply wrong, so I'll try again (my first posting here)! I have the same problem with sulphur burbs, which lasted until I finally vomited and had "D" as well. My doctor prescribed Prevacid, which helped, but then my brother told me he has the same thing happen to him and Pepto Bismol helped control it - which I tried and it did help. My doctor didn't really know what was causing the problem.

I have just been diagnosed (through EnteroLab) as gluten and casein sensitive and I believe my brother has the same thing. My father and two sisters have been confirmed with active celiac disease. I have a celiac gene and a gluten sensitive gene, one from each parent.

I did that for many years. I used to call them my "mini flu's". Of course all the doctors kept telling me was that I had IBS. Since going gluten-free - no more IBS no more mini flu's.

I used to get those sulphur burps as well. I know they came from eggs! I get lots of symptoms from gluten and dairy, but the sulphur burps were definitely from eggs (I'd always get them shortly after eating eggs). Since I stopped eating just about everything there is to eat, including eggs, I don't have that problem any more.

It's a long shot, since everybody is different. But you may want to try eliminating eggs to see if it helps! It could also be another intolerance, who knows. I don't think taking antacids, or worse, prevacid, is a great idea unless an elimination diet has been done to try to find the culprit. It's so much better (and healthier) to stop eating the offending food, than to take meds.

I'm another that thinks that when you omit the offending food, the burping / indigestion problems will stop. I went on Prevacid earlier this year for reflux, belching and upper stomach discomfort/gas. After 3 weeks, I stopped taking it because the side effects were worse than the reflux! I got back to trying to sort out my food intolerance and after completely cutting out grains and legumes, the reflux problems went away. Of course, we all have different food issues, but you might want to see if there is a pattern to your symptoms, and try rotating any foods that may be suspect.

I don't eat eggs--unless they are in a cake mix etc and this is very infrequent and these episodes so far have not occured after having eggs. I am keeping a food journal and trying to find a link, but so far no luck. Since I'm also diabetic it would be really hard to cut out everything and reintroduce foods one at a time to see what's causing the problem. Do you think trying the Pepto Bismol would be okay at the onset of theses "burps"? Or any ideas of how to cut out and reintroduce foods without messing up my blood sugars? :rolleyes:

Hi, I had a friend who used to get those symptoms especially the sulphar burps and it turned out she had gallbladder stones. I would check this out.

Ooops...techo challenged--sorry. I had my gallbladder tested and it was fine. The specialist felt these symptoms were caused by my body acting to gluten--it just seems so different from everyone else's post and problems--to a degree anyway. Argh! :angry:

Sorry I missed your first post!!! I do have simliar reactions. "Sulpher" burps is a good way to describe them. I start getting those about 2 hours after gluten/casein ingestion. Later D and throwing up which lasts for 3-4 hours and then the burps stop. In fact, I know when the reaction is subsiding as the "sulpher" burbs go away!! That's always a sign of hope for me when I'm having an attack, as soon as those burps go away I know the worst is over. For me, the reaction is more like a flushing out. It seems like my digestive track picks a point somewhere in the middle and just empties out of both ends. This might be TMI, but the smell, color, and consistency of the stuff that comes out is the same for both ends. YUCK!

Do you have any arthiritic symptoms, or intense abdominal pain to go along with that too?

I don't have any arthiritic symptoms. The only intense abdominal pain I get is when my body is having one of these attacks. Like you, when the sulphur burps go away I know i will not throw up again and the 'D' will settle down quickly too.

      You are most welcome, Marie.  Thank you for getting in touch, because this sort of post will be seen by other parents who find themselves in this position, I am sure there are many.   And as I say, in the long run, I am sure your daughter will be sorry for what she said.  I remember having a go at my dear Mum when I was in my twenties about something and then apologising, saying, "I don't know how you put up with me."  I can't remember her exact words but it was something along the lines of, "I used to say things like to my Mum.  Now it's my turn [to be on the receiving end]!"    😂  Although it isn't very nice to be on the receiving end, it is good your daughter feels safe to say these things to you. We look forward to hearing from you again in due course.

      Are You Confused About Your Celiac Disease Lab Results? Some people test negative but have a positive biopsy, others test positive but negative biopsy.  This is why it can take years and misdiagnosis of other diseases that Celiac Disease can mimic. The above link is a good read with real life examples. Something I find interesting is that in 1980 or so a new diagnosis was created, Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, only 10 years after Norman Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize for creating our modern wheat and the Green Revolution.

      @Steve-n-Portland, there is a difference in the requirements to use the label "Gluten Free" and the label "Certified Gluten Free". "Gluten Free" is governed by FDA regulations and has a ceiling of 20 ppm. "Certified Gluten Free" is a labeling convention used by the GFCO, an independent international third party certifying group that uses 10 ppm as its standard.

      We have had numerous reports from forum participants experiencing gluten reactions from Trader Joe "gluten-free" products. It seems it's not a good place for the celiac/gluten sensitive community to shop.

      Also, a class action lawsuit was launched in 2024 against Trader Joe's re: their " gluten free" everything bagels. They tested at 269ppm. (Personally, I am not sure they will win. The FDA says that the *ingredients* have to be less than 20ppm for a company to label something "gluten-free."  In order to be certified as gluten-free by the GFCO, the *final product* needs to be less than 20ppm. That said, the lawsuit is arguing that most people read that label and assume the final product is safe for people with celiac. Thus, many people were made sick. And being sick can have costly consequences in regard to work or school, depending when one becomes ill.)
