High Fever

Hi all. I came down with a nasty bug today and my fever has spiked at 103F. I have Dayquill in my medicine cabinet. Is that an effective fever reducer? If not, any suggestions? I'm hoping my dh will run out for medicine tomorrow if need be. Thanks.

Guhlia, unless you're absolutely miserable, with a terrible headache, you would do well to leave the fever alone. It is there for a reason, the heat will kill whatever makes you sick, it's your immune system that is producing the fever! The fever isn't a problem, it's a symptom. Try attacking the cause, by taking garlic, echinacea, vitamin C, vitamin A, Zinc, vitamin E and B vitamin complex. That will boost your immune system, and your body will rid itself of the 'bug'. And drink lots of water (not orange juice, that's a bad mistake, even though people believe it helps).

But if you have a bad headache with it, Tylenol should do the trick, and I believe it is gluten free (but I may be wrong, even though it never gave me trouble).

I hope you feel better soon!

I use teh Member's mark acetaminophen from Sam's. It's gluten-free. Hope you feel better soon!!!!!

Advil works best for a fever! As an adult 103 is extremely high.

For a fever, I use Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets. If there is pain involved, I use Bufferin Extra Strength. Hope you feel better soon! :)

Guhlia How is your fever this am????

Patti--this is what i use too "I use Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets"

I took some ex strenght excedrine this am at 6:00 am and was pain free at 8:00 ( If there is pain involved, I use Bufferin Extra Strength.) I have never used this product..does it really work better than exced or have you tried it not sure of corn etc in it..over the years (to my internist's horror) i would need 20 of the Excedrin A DAY to touch the pain. Now don't need to take than many thank God...

I know it doesn't work on fever but for pain..for me..better than darvacet!!!

Judy--I don't take aspirin often, only if I really have a bad headache or have bad muscle aches, etc. Aspirin can cause stomach upset in some people (with all my stomach issues, I'm fine with it--go figure!) and regular usage can cause stomach bleeding or even an ulcer. It does work on pain, though--I recently pulled my shoulder doing yard work and the Bufferin got me through. I don't take Excedrin because of the caffeine--that bothers my stomach, and makes me jittery! Advil and Motrin also cause nausea for me. I don't use any pain releiver very often, so these two work for me in the event I do need them. :)

Judy--The Excedrin could be causing you to feel shaky and jittery especially if you drink regular coffee or tea--the caffeine adds up. Oh--Mark did get home for dinner, but since we celebrated Father's Day on Saturday, it was just a normal dinner :D

For adults or children, you should always try to bring down a fever that is above 101 F. Tylenol or Motrin are best. I believe that all Tylenol products with the exception of Tylenol Meltaways (junior strength) are gluten free.

The Rapid Release is not gluten-free. I posted McNeil's gluten-free list a while ago--there are a few products that are not safe for us. Here is a thread all about Tylenol-

You can also take a lukewarm bath (NOT cold, I repeat NOT cold. Cold causes shivering and shivering increases your core temp.). It helps to draw some of the heat out and will make you a little more comefortable.

That is a misconception, that has been perpetuated way too long. Our bodies will regulate themselves, and never overheat to where it becomes dangerous, unless poisoned. Even convulsions aren't necessarily cause for concern, and don't cause any damage (which is contrary to what 'everybody knows', I know). Only if the fever goes above 104 F should you do something about it.

And by the way, there are natural ways to bring a fever down, without meds. Try a lukewarm bath, or soaking towels in lukewarm water and wrapping them around your calves, as well as a cool cloth on your forehead.

Now, if you think you have been poisoned by something, make sure you do bring the fever down, as it might keep going up past a safe level, in fact, in that case going to the hospital would be in order.

Oh, I need to add: This does NOT apply to very small babies! A high fever is always a concern with a new baby, and is a reason for a visit to the ER.

Thanks everyone for your concern. My fever finally broke late this morning. What a long day yesterday was though. I went from 102.5 to 103.8 throughout the course of the day. I was starting to get a little worried. Nothing brought the fever down. Thankfully, I'm back to normal today (temperature wise). Thanks again.

I am glad to hear you are on your way to recovery, and all while our discussion here went on!

Test results came back for everything that was tested now. Cholesterol is off the charts high. Not sure if that’s related to celiac, I have no idea how it could be so high. Also tested positive for H pylori  infection… is there a link to celiac and H pylori? Or am I just experiencing symptoms of the H pylori infection?

I’m reading that some sites list a high Immunoglobulin A result for my age above 300, another site says above 356, and other sites are saying above 400. I don’t know what to make of this result 🤷‍♂️

You got some bum steers my friend. I have little confidence that you can trust your test results as differentiating between NCGS and celiac disease. And I think you would be much more likely to have gotten that note you need if you had been diagnosed with celiac disease. But believe me, I understand the predicament you are in with regard to the risks of repeating the gluten challenge. We have heard this story many times on this forum. People experiment with the gluten free diet before getting an official diagnosis and then cannot tolerate the gluten challenge later on when they seek an official diagnosis.
    • Jason Hi
For the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, they said 7 days of gluten. So I did 8...fast food and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. For the earlier blood test, the younger doctor said I didn't have to. My immune system went down, I was in the bathroom a lot, and as my wife said my brain wasn't braining.

Thanks guys. I just got my results but I don’t know what they mean…  celiac disease reflex panel Immunoglobulin A  normal range 66-433  my results are a score of 358. Is this normal? I have no idea what to make of it…
