South City Kitchen- Atlanta

So the company I work for was having a meeting here in Atlanta. They are based in NYC, so they asked me for restaurant recommendations near their hotel. I knew I would be attending the dinner as well, but I went ahead and recommended South City Kitchen, even though I knew the Southern cuisine menu would not be particularly gluten-free friendly. I was concerned about bringing up such issues in a very loud, chaotic, group dinner setting. Well, the server was terrific, said that she had served 6-7 gluten-free people in the past couple of weeks, and immediately offered to alter the entree that I was interested in from the limited group menu offered. None of the desserts on the limited menu were gluten-free, so she offered me sorbet instead. Well, my entree arrived perfectly gluten-free, but when dessert came around, the sorbet came out in a fancy looking "pastry-like" shell. I had a companion taste it and she thought there was flour in it, but wasn't sure. I asked the server and she said the chef indicated it was made from sugar and "something else" but didn't have flour in it. Still, she could see I was doubtful, so she brought me another sorbet by itself.

So I have to give a surprising thumbs-up for my gluten-free experience at South City Kitchen. Keep in mind that there' s no way that their most popular dishes, like fried chicken, can be made gluten-free. But a dish like the shrimp and grits with gravy can be ordered without gravy. You can work your way around the menu and end up having a great meal.

Thanks so much for posting about this place! I heard it was great from non Celiac diners so I'm excited to try it now. Thanks again!

Thank you for the information. I did order/receive GliadinX to have on hand in the event of suspected exposure.

Just had a letter through from the Celiac team, they’ve diagnosed me through my bloods, no endoscopy/biopsy needed. I guess I’ll be sticking around on this forum and I’m sure I’ll be back soon. thanks for all your help

I have no specific recommendations but I would suggest looking for products that are advertised as produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility. That should eliminate one possible route of cross contamination. It doesn't guarantee that none of the ingredients going into the product are totally gluten free but is should eliminate adding more CC to the mix via processing machinery.  One of the issues you may be experiencing is that testing has shown that a significant percentage of "Certified Gluten Free" products can test far in excess of 10ppm. There was an article appearing in this forum back last summer outlining the results of testing that showed this to be true. So, it may be somewhat of a pig in a poke when you buy this stuff, regardless of how it is billed. It may be safe for you if it actually fits within the stated requirements of it's billing.

I can still have a reaction from “certified gluten free” products I don’t like having to use the eat and see what my body does approach are there really any purely gluten free products or do I just have to make all of my own food?
