Z Tejas

Hi! I am going out with a friend tonight and I suggested Z tejas because they have a gluten free menu online, so I thought it might be safe. I called the restaurant that I am going to and asked if their chips and salsa were gluten free, I got passed through 3 people, until finally I got the manager on the phone. He said he thought there was gluten in the chips because they had flour in them. I told him that most dont and asked if he could check with his chef. He came back on the phone and said that he was wrong and that the chips and salsa were gluten free. Which I feel okay with since this came from the chef, but it makes me nervous because he didn't really know what he was talking about. Has anyone been to Z tejas and tried anything off the gluten free menu? Did you have a good or bad experience? Maybe when I get there I can ask to talk to the chef instead of the manager.

Now, I am going to rant a little...if a restaurant is going to offer a gluten free menu I feel like they need to educate their staff (especially their managers)! What is the point of having a gluten free menu if no one knows what it is or what it does!! Okay, thats all!! :)

Yes, I've been there, and the one I went to was fairly well educated. They had their menu printed up, and I also referred to their online version. Talking in person also tends to help, or asking to talk to the chef. They can try to educate the staff, but with turnover, it can be hit or miss - what really matters is if the chef knows. I had good luck, I hope your visit goes well.

Well,I just got back from the restaurant and got SO sick! I haven't been this sick in months! Luckily I am to the point where I can hold it (just recently) but as soon as I got home, I got sick. I am ready to give up on eating out :(

Thank you for the information. I did order/receive GliadinX to have on hand in the event of suspected exposure.

Just had a letter through from the Celiac team, they’ve diagnosed me through my bloods, no endoscopy/biopsy needed. I guess I’ll be sticking around on this forum and I’m sure I’ll be back soon. thanks for all your help

I have no specific recommendations but I would suggest looking for products that are advertised as produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility. That should eliminate one possible route of cross contamination. It doesn't guarantee that none of the ingredients going into the product are totally gluten free but is should eliminate adding more CC to the mix via processing machinery.  One of the issues you may be experiencing is that testing has shown that a significant percentage of "Certified Gluten Free" products can test far in excess of 10ppm. There was an article appearing in this forum back last summer outlining the results of testing that showed this to be true. So, it may be somewhat of a pig in a poke when you buy this stuff, regardless of how it is billed. It may be safe for you if it actually fits within the stated requirements of it's billing.

I can still have a reaction from “certified gluten free” products I don’t like having to use the eat and see what my body does approach are there really any purely gluten free products or do I just have to make all of my own food?
