I've been working hard to make sure I'm using safe shampoos, conditioners, etc.

I've always used AVEDA but so many of their products contain wheat or rye or barley, etc. that obviously it doesn't leave me w/ many options to choose from their product line anymore.

Does anyone have any safe recommendations for the following????

shampoo

deep conditioning treatment

daily leave in conditioner

gel (for when I wear it curly)

straightening product (for when I blow dry it straight)

I use Alterna Caviar shampoo and conditioner. They also have a deep conditioner. Stay away from their hairspray as it has wheat.

For a leave in conditioner, I take an old hairspray bottle and fill it with water, I add a couple pumps of conditioner to it. I use that to wet my hair down a little on days I don't wash it. With these products not containing waxes, I find I don't need to wash it daily. This is a high end product like Aveda, so you should like it.

I am glad you brought up the question of hair products. I wear my hair short and spiked. I cannot find a super hold hair spray or gel that is gluten free. Any ideas?

Try the Giovanni line of products. I find them in my grocery stores 'Health Food" department. When I called the company they started that everything was gluten-free even their 'Golden Wheat Shampoo, I suggested they change the name  . They have gels and lots of nice skin care stuff as well as shampoos and conditioners. I find the one with tea tree oil is nice when I have DH but usually use 50/50 and smooth as sild conditioner. Their new antifrizz serum is fantastic and the only one I ever used that worked.

I also recommend Giovanni Organic Haircare. I use their mousse (I have curly hair), conditioner and hairspray. The Golden Wheat shampoo does have a stupid name. They also have a straightning cream. I have only used it a few times--it is on the thick side. :D However, my favorite shampoo, and some others use it here now, is Aubrey Organics Rosa Mosqueta shampoo. It is soooo great! I was a real "product whore" previously, but none of the shampoos I ever used gave me the body and shiny hair this shampoo does. Its definitely worth a try. I swear I'm not a paid advertiser for them!

Hi Turtle--From the list of products you need, it sounds like your hair is similar to mine. (Mine's naturally curly, tends to be dry, can be worn blown straight or worn curly.)

I was using Shikai Shampoo and Conditioner. It was good, but I still wanted to find something more moisturizing. I've been using Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo and Conditioner for a week or so and it had made a difference--my hair is much shinier and less frizzy. I wear it curly in the summer (can't fight the humidity!) and love Dove Smooth and Soft Anti Frizz Creme. It leaves my curls soft, not crunchy. For straightening, I used to love John Frieda Blow Dry Straightening Creme--but I don't know if it is safe anymore--Goivanni makes a straightening creme that looks promising, but I have not tried it yet. I'll probably buy some when the weather cools off and I feel like blow drying again.

(Hi Patti, how ya been??)

Great timing on this thread, I am in need of hair help too, stat :lol:

I've been experimenting with different products and still am not happy with what I've tried. Currently I am testing Avalon Organics Awapuhi Mango Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, it's not very moisturizing imo, at least for my hair type. I need something more moisturizing, mega moisturizing. I was about to try the Shikai line next so thanks for the heads up Patti that it isn't all that great for moisturizing. And anyway my stores only seem to carry the Shikai products for hair that has been colored, not the basics.

I might try Aubrey Organics next then, the only problem is it contains soy ingredients, so does Giovanni I noticed, :( If it's not one thing it's another as far as ingredients go. If you find something with out gluten it seems to have soy, and then the products without both don't seem to work for me......

Julie--I felt the same way you do about soy in the hair products. I can't tolerate it in my diet, and thought it was best to keep it out of my personal care products, too. It's just that there are so *few* gluten free, SLS free products out there! I reluctantly tried the Giovanni, knowing it had the soy. I do like the way it makes my hair look and feel  I'm curious, why do you not want to use hair care products with soy?

I'm fine--how have you been? :D

Mango04 Enthusiast

I feel the same way about not wanting soy in my products. I'm really sensitive to it and it makes my skin break out in cysts. For some reason though, I'm able to use Aubrey Organics shampoo with no problems. I like the Rosa Mosqueta, but I'm currently using the Camomile Luxurious (or something like that) and I really like it.

I've been good! I saw your post up in the "OMG" book, I'll talk to you up there :lol:

I'm trying to avoid soy just because I am a firm believer that everything we put on our bodies is absorbed by the skin, but it is difficult like you said almost everything has soy in it now.

Mango, that's good to hear you like the Aubrey line. :) I think I am going to try the White Cammellia Shampoo and Conditioner first because it is suppose to be the most moisturizing according to their website. Fingers crossed!

I wish I could get a hold of some samples for all of these products to try before I buy.....

Turtle Enthusiast

Thank you SOOO much for all the replies! This is so exciting!

And yes, jerseyangel we have the EXACT same hair types....too cool (well, not when there is humidity involved, HA).

I really appreciate the suggestions as I was getting quite distraught (i'm anal about my hair, I admit it) about what products I could use that were safe!

Hope everyone has a good hair day! :P

Julie (and everyone), Beware of the White Camilla Conditioner! I just looked it up, as I thought I might try it sometime, and noticed that the conditioner has wheat germ oil in it. The shampoo looks safe, though.

I just saw that too....

I like the sound of the Honeysuckly-Rose Shampoo & Conditioner....but still gonna read up on Giovanni too.

Ooh yes! The Honeysuckle-Rose Shampoo and Conditioner do look nice! May try those next :D

 I'm anal about my hair, too  Always on the lookout for the "perfect product"!

Now I can't decide...I like the sound of Honeysuckle/Rose and the Giovanni products....

AGH! Decisions, decisions....

I know how you feel! If you go with the Honeysuckle, please let me know how you like it. Good luck :D

For those of you with dry hair, I rub some coconut oil between my hands and rub it into my hair (sparingly!!!). It moisturizes it and leaves it shiny.

I'm somewhat obsessive about my hair, too, but find it looks better the more I leave it alone! I'll mortgage the house for the right hair products!

Mango04 Enthusiast

Just a warning about the Aubrey Organics stuff - when you first open the bottle, it smells kind of icky. But when you put in in your hair - the scent is really awesome. I don't know why that is.

OMG, I would have never noticed that. I was just assuming everything was gluten-free. Thanks so much Patti for your detective work!

Edit- I just looked at all the conditioners for dry hair and they all have wheat germ oil in them, poop :(

I use "short sexy hair" the "hard up" style. I don't know if it's gluten free or not. Don't see any bad stuff on the label. Does anyone know if it's safe?? I'm just getting started on all this!

Turtle Enthusiast

Oh my goodness....you are so right...STUPID WHEAT!!!! AGH!!!!

How the heck did I miss that!? Well, I guess I'll be sticking with the Giovanni :) Thanks Julie ;)

Mango04 Enthusiast

I use Aubrey shampoo with Giovanni conditioner. Have no idea if the Aubrey shampoo is better than the Giovanni shampoo though :)

Looks like I might have to do the same, an Aubrey shampoo with a Giovanni conditioner. Either that or all Giovanni.

The Giovanni website kind of cracks me up, it's like a fortress to get in there and then the music and the bubbles and the poems, very dramatic....:lol:

Turtle Enthusiast

I thought the same things about the Giovanni website...finally just looked it up on another site. HAHA!

For those of you who use Giovanni products where do you usually buy yours from??? Wasn't sure where they carry them (i.e. grocery stores? drug stores? health food stores??)

Hi Trents-Thanks for reading and sharing insight.  We need all the help we can get and it's super appreciated.  She is currently dairy, soy and oat free and those have mostly been completely excluded from her diet since the diagnosis (we tried going back on dairy and oats at different times for a bit, didn't see a significant difference but have now cut out again just to be extra safe since her issues are so persistent.  We did cut eggs out for about 3 months and didn't notice significant difference there, either.  The only one we haven't specifically cut out completely for any portion of time is corn, however, we've kept it minimal in all of our diets for a long time.  She definitely goes 3-4 weeks without any corn products at times and still has issues, but I'm guessing that's not long enough to confirm that it isn't causing issues.   We could definitely try to go longer just to double check.  Thanks again!

Ok so know one knows about cross reactions from yeast, corn, potatoes, eggs, quinoa ,chocolate, milk, soy, and a few more I forgot.  There all gluten free but share a similar structure to gluten proteins. I use to be able to eat potatoes but now all of a sudden I was stumped and couldn't figure it out when I got shortness of breath like I was suffocating.  Then figured it out it was the potatoes.  They don't really taste good anyways. Get the white yams and cherry red 🍠 yams as a sub they taste way better. It's a cross reaction! Google foods that cross react with celiacs.  Not all of them you will cross react too. My reactions now unfortunately manifest in my chest and closes everything up . Life sucks then we die. Stay hopeful and look and see different companies that work for you . Lentils from kroger work for me raw in the bag and says nothing about gluten free but it works for me just rinse wellllll.....don't get discouraged and stay hopeful and don't pee off god

Hi Lily Ivy. Thanks for responding. Did you have withdrawal? If so, what was it like and for how long?

Welcome to the forum, @Doris Barnes! You do realize don't you that the "gluten free" label does not mean the same thing as "free of gluten"? According to FDA regulations, using the "gluten free" label simply means the product does not contain gluten in excess of 20 ppm. "Certified Gluten Free" is labeling deployed by an independent testing group known as GFCO which means the product does not contain gluten in excess of 10 ppm. Either concentration of gluten can still cause a reaction in folks who fall into the more sensitive spectrum of the celiac community. 20 ppm is safe for most celiacs. Without knowing how sensitive you are to small amounts of gluten, I cannot speak to whether or not the Hu Kitechen chocolates are safe for you. But it sounds like they have taken sufficient precautions at their factory to ensure that this product will be safe for the large majority of celiacs.

Buying choclate, I recently boght a bar from Hu Kitchen (on your list of recommended candy. It says it is free of gluten. However on the same package in small print it says "please be aware that the product is produced using equipment that also processes nuts, soy, milk and wheat. Allergen cleans are made prior to production". So my question is can I trust that there is no cross contamination.  If the allergy clean is not done carefully it could cause gluten exposure. Does anyone know of a choclate brand that is made at a facility that does not also use wheat, a gluten free facility. Thank you.
