Luna Sunrise Bars-doesn't Say Contains Wheat But Has Organic Barley

I just bought about 10 of the LUNA bars at the grocery in the organic dept. I was so excited to see it didn't contain Wheat. So in my haste I didn't notice that the ingredients contain "organic barley"--until I was eating the bar. The allergen type in bold caps says : "Contains Soy and Almonds. We source ingredients that do not contain Wheat or Dairy and are not genetically engineered."

Is this Ok or not? I just ate half of the bar--don't have the tell tale belly ache yet. But wanted to find out if anyone knows about these bars--before I give them away. (Groan)

Barley, weather it be organic or not.......is not safe for people with celiac disease. You must avoid wheat, rye, barley (& oats). Sorry.....hope you find a friend to pass the bars along to. Otherwise take them back to the store and explain that you can't have barley and realized these contain barley when you got home. I'm sure they will refund your money.

Sorry, but if you have Celiac, you can not eat barley. Wheat free does not mean gluten-free--it could still contain barley (as these do), rye or oats.

No, they are not safe. The allergen statement didn't list barley because the allergen labeling law only covers the eight major allergens: wheat, dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish. It does NOT cover the other three grains which contain gluten - barley, rye, or oats. You still have to read the ingredients for those three offenders.

The store will almost certainly refund your money on those items.

Thanks everyone for the info. I am newly diagnosed and I thought Barley was off the list--but was confused when it wasn't listed in the Allergen statement and that they said source ingredients don't contain wheat. Guess I will find my receipt and try to take them back.

Ichthus is the Greek word (using English letters) for fish. The letters in the actual Greek word form an acronym that come from the first letters in the Greek words for "Jesus", "God's Son," "Savior".   Now, back to your family's denial of your celiac disease, I think you can relate to this:

Thanks for the kind words. It's hard to convince my doctor to investigate further because of a negative blood test and he only tested me for one marker. 🙃 I've come to the point where I need to take this into my own hands because the doctors are infuriating and it's not going anywhere. I've been gluten free for a week and feeling better but I was still consuming dairy and I think that's what's backing me up. Next week no dairy introduced.

Hello mantooth nice to meet you it's so uncanny what you wrote you sound just like me even the back issues are exactly the same and I'm new here too trying to find out if I have the same had I too have been struggling to find answers with my docters I don't have a diagnosis but I've been struggling like forever and was told ibs and health aniexty was my problem but on researching I've come to the conclusion it's probably more because i cut gluten and lactose out for 6 months and  it was a incredible change for me so although I can't help with diagnosis I can say your not alone in trying  to find answers 😊
