I have to get a biopsy and I hate the idea of something going down my throat! Do they give something so you sleep? Please fill me in...

I've had three endoscopes since April and for each time I can't remember a single thing except getting wheeled into the room and then waking up in the recovery area. I was talking to the nurse for a while before they actually started this last time and told her that I had heard that I would be awake but that I just wouldn't remember it, but she said that I would be awake enough to breathe basically, lol.

Thank you! I have heard it is called "twilight", but I get so worried I am going to be gagging and know it!

The first endoscopy I had, they used versed and demerol. The versed is like perscription roofies, you're conscious, but you don't know that you are. "conscious sedation" Apparently I said some wacky stuff to the nurses, and I don't remember going home. Of course, the dr. chose right after the procedure to tell me what he saw, like I remember that. Anyway, I don't remember much, I know that they told me to stop biting the tube at some point, and I could see my insides on the screen, but only for a moment.

Pretty trippy :P

You're welcome! I think that even though I was asleep, or in twilight, they still used a spray to help with the gagging reflex although I didn't ask them that specifically...I do think I heard the nurse say that they would be using a spray...I was already asleep if they did use one, lol.

Blech, they used the spray on me before I was asleep. OMG the worst tasting stuff EVER!! It was "banana" flavored, but at least the nurses warned me it would be disgusting.

My mom just had something similar and she said she remembers gagging a little but that is it. I just have such a phobia about gagging, I HATE IT!!! I am just going to tell them how freaked out I am and hope they make me as comfortable as possible.

GF ME Newbie

I just had the endoscopy done last Wednesday, when it became official that I am a Celiac. Whatever the gas was that the anestesiologist used, I didn't remember a thing. I had the slightest sore throat that evening, but the worst part was fasting 14 hours. They tell you no eating after midnight. What if your procedure is at 2:00PM the next day?!!? Anyway, no biggie!

Thank you so much for all of your replies! Makes me feel so much better about it.

I know they sprayed my throat with a numbing spray. I didn't have any troubles with the gagging (to my knowledge).

If you stress , it will only make it worse. Try to relax.

I think that's a great idea. I told the nurse (on the second scope) who was administering the meds that I tend to get sick on sedation and whatever he did was perfect because I felt pretty darned good afterwards...tired but good, lol. They're usually really good about making you comfortable.

I had an Endoscopy done not too long ago. I am right there with you on the GAG PHOBIA!! My procedure was not very pleasant at all. My advice to you is to make sure you tell your Dr. that you don't want to know anything that is going on durng the procedure. I made the mistake of just letting the Dr. do his job as usual and I remember everything! The Dr. actually had to tell me over and over to stop pulling at the tube. He said that I was trying to pull it out. They did not use a spray with me...they made me gargle some nasty stuff that is supposed to numb your gag reflex. Once I gargled a little of it down, I felt as if I couldn't breath. I totally had a panic attack during the entire procedure. I told my Dr. afterward that if he ever had to perform that again to knock me completely out!!!

Good luck to you. Hopefully your experience will be a lot smoother than mine.

I'm having mine done next week and feel the same way! I told my husband he would have to go with me and hold my hand. I had a colonoscopy done several years ago and remember it. But I don't want so much medication that I have a hard time waking up either.

Hi,

I think its a good idea to tell the doctor what you'd want. I'd suggest being put out for it. They did not give me enough demerol and had to readminister it during the procedure. I was awake and aware through all of it, including the discovery channel tour of my esophogus and small intestine. I gagged quite a bit and was very sore the next few days. In fact, I became quite sick and feverish afterwards. But I'm hypersensitive to these things, most people told me it wasn't a problem for them at all.

Take good care,

Alex

My endoscope was no big deal. I had the spray so the back of my throat was frozen, which felt unusual but certainly not painful. I was sedated, but I told them "just enough to make me really relaxed". And that's exactly what they did. It depends on your personality--I do not like being unconscious and out of my own control. If you're okay with being right out of it and anethsesia doesn't make you sick, you probably want to be "out".

Thank you to all of your for your input! It really helps. I would like to have no idea what is going on, so I will tell them that!

Thanks again!

Versed is the conscious sedation medication, and it is wonderful. I wouldn't do it any other way. Have had it three times, and remember nothing. I was just tired the rest of the day, but that is no big deal.

New here as well lots of things learning I’ve discovered lots of foods have sneaky gluten so be mindful how is it going?? I have issues when I do cocktails 🍸 I don’t know if it is gluten free or not but get horrible side effects and so many others ooh well we are all learning how to cope with this….

Thanks a lot! I will search that too. I also talked to another doctor and she assured me there is no gluten in this type of antibiotics. Anyway i started the administration of Augmentin on my girl this evening. I hope there will be no problems.

Good afternoon, I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried Braswell’s products like their marmalades or jellies? Are they gluten-free? On the ingredients says “cane sugar, cherries (cherries, cane sugar), strawberries, corn syrup, pectin and citric acid. That ingredient list is from their berry preserve bottle. Most of them say the same for ingredients, but I’m not sure if it is okay to consume.

I have seen this problem many times. I always get in touch with the company. Most times they tell me if I'm just gluten free it is ok, but do not eat it if you are celiac. Calling the company is the best way when you are not sure. Yesterday I had a different example of products being marked gluten-free.  I love chocolate and have a piece each day. The chocolate bar I like is Chocolove. When I bought one this week it was not marked gluten-free. I called the company to find out why and if it was still gluten-free.  Turns out the manufacturer decided there was too much on the wrapper and took off the gluten-free label. It is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
