My baby had his endoscopy yesterday at the request of Dr fusano and they told me he had a lot of esophogus inflammation that I was told was totally unrelated to his Celiac. we are awaiting the biopsy results. I thought reflux/backwards burps/idegestion were all side affects of celiac that could possible do this kind of damage, Am I crazy? I know for me personally thats how I immediatly tell if there is hidden gluten in something I am eating because it burns my throat and I start getting terrible indegestion. Has anyone else seen or heard of this type of damage? The strangest part is is that they are sure he has celiac due to his off the charts bloodwork but saw no visible damage in the small intestine/stomach (we are waiting for the biopsy) but saw all this visible damage in the esophogus, something we weren't looking for!

Is that "THE" Dr. Fusano that has written a lot on Celiac and has been a speaker at Celiac conventions?

mbg98 Contributor

Yes, "THE" Dr.fusano! He is great! Such a nice Dr., another doctor from the Celiac center a doctor Maliki (SP?) preforms the endoscope but dr. Fusano is the Doctor you see and speak with.

So has anyone else seen or heard of esophogus damage?

my baby's esophagus was getting ulcerated by the time she was 8 months old. she had really bad reflux that could not be controlled by any medication. she was refluxing almost 25% of the time. she does not have celiac.

Both my kids were reflux babies, I was always covered in spit-up! It got better as they got older but my youngest I have noticed always has the backwards burps and swallows really hard, I attributed it to the possibility of Celiac. I didn't consider it would be doing internal damage, or that now I have to consider there be another totally unrelated thing to treat.

sounds like he probably never outgrew his reflux. was he on meds as a baby? have they recommended he be on a PPI now? sylvia had a fundoplication when she was 10 months old. my twins are both on prevacid.

He is not on any meds at the moment, We thought the reflux was from the celiac so we were waiting to get the official diagnosis from Dr Fusano, and then he had to go for the endoscope. We were never considering it to be a seperate problem, thought it would go away when on the gluten-free diet. But of course it has taken 2 months to see Dr. fusano and then he couldn't go gluten-free until after the endoscope and now we are waiting until next week for the results.

i was hoping my twins' reflux would go away when they went gluten free, too, but it didn't. kassie's reflux is pretty bad. we didn't even know tianna had reflux until her scope because she didn't have any symptoms. i'm not sure how we will tell if her's has improved or not.

is he gluten free now? i guess if they feel it is not related to celiac they will be putting him on meds?

mbg98 Contributor

No he is not gluten-free yet we are waiting on the biopsy results which should be in on thursday. They also took biopsies from his esophogus so hopefully we will know exactly what it is.

New here as well lots of things learning I’ve discovered lots of foods have sneaky gluten so be mindful how is it going?? I have issues when I do cocktails 🍸 I don’t know if it is gluten free or not but get horrible side effects and so many others ooh well we are all learning how to cope with this….

Thanks a lot! I will search that too. I also talked to another doctor and she assured me there is no gluten in this type of antibiotics. Anyway i started the administration of Augmentin on my girl this evening. I hope there will be no problems.

Good afternoon, I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried Braswell’s products like their marmalades or jellies? Are they gluten-free? On the ingredients says “cane sugar, cherries (cherries, cane sugar), strawberries, corn syrup, pectin and citric acid. That ingredient list is from their berry preserve bottle. Most of them say the same for ingredients, but I’m not sure if it is okay to consume.

I have seen this problem many times. I always get in touch with the company. Most times they tell me if I'm just gluten free it is ok, but do not eat it if you are celiac. Calling the company is the best way when you are not sure. Yesterday I had a different example of products being marked gluten-free.  I love chocolate and have a piece each day. The chocolate bar I like is Chocolove. When I bought one this week it was not marked gluten-free. I called the company to find out why and if it was still gluten-free.  Turns out the manufacturer decided there was too much on the wrapper and took off the gluten-free label. It is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
