I used to use oil of olay, but my face now gets bright pink as soon as I put it on. I tried other brands, hand creams too, and the same thing happens. I stopped using anything, and now I look like I have my Grandma's skin. HELP???!!!

Alison, I don't know what the common, offending ingredient could be, but there must be one. Why don't you try just using olive oil to moisturize for now? My homeopath recommended that for me, until I found out that it's high in salicylates. Otherwise I would try it, too.

Try "Udderly Smooth Udder Cream" (it comes in a jar with the black and white COW print).

You can get it at Amazon, CVS, many places.

I use it on my body and when I really was broken out with DH it was the only lotion/cream I could use without making me itch and break out more. It's very light and it absorbs fast and does a good job and it smells very light too. I really like it a lot for the whole body. For my face I use face creams like Olay and Yves Rocher, because I don't have allergic problems with my face anymore. But I DID when DH was bad.

However if you are allergic to something like "petrolatum" which is in almost all lotions/creams you may have a problem. Then you will have to get expensive stuff from one of the cosmetic makers. Yves Rocher has some stuff that is hypo-allergenic and so does Mary Kay and Avon and some of the other Dept. Store brands.

The link below is to the Amazon page with all the Udder Cream on it so you can what they look like and id them in the stores or order from Amazon.

They SAY that Eucerin is hypo-allergenic. You could try that too. Trying all this stuff gets expensive, I KNOW. I have a bathroom FULL of creams and lotions. Some good, some bad. But I have WAY TOO MANY!

I use Mary Kay. I used to use Eminence (all natural, organic, good stuff, VERY expensive, 54.00 for my moist.). The more I read and contact companies, the more I learn IS safe rather than NOT safe.

You might want to "patch test" stuff on the inside of your elbow (recomended by a derm.) because the skin there rubs together, so if there is going to be a problem, it would show up there. I, for one, have had reactions on my face, that I didn't have anywhere else, but that is what the Derm recomended.

You've helped me so much, I hope this will help you.

I also got the 'bright pink' flush after using all the products people have recommended on here in the past threads and others that seem to work for them. All May Kaye products 'have killed me even before dx'

Since I am under going treatment for lymphedema as a result to the cellulitis, the PT doing the MLD has said the only lotion I can use iever is 'Eucerin' I got it at CVS and large pump bottle is maybe $13.00.

It is called a dry skin therapy and is a moisturizing lotion. I ck'ed it with my Chiro and she approves too as it has natural ingreg and not peterolium (which most otheres do) I did a search on here and all say is gluten-free as i asked the Pt AND CHIRO TOO. AND ALL SAID OK...I haven't ck'd the product web site or deplphia list but it sure agrees with me and have to use every hr while up during the day. It is fragrance free & has SPF 15 UVA/UVB protection SFP 30 (not sure why these 2 #'s are listed)

good luck. Let me know how you like it.

My dermatologist always reccommended cetaphil lotion, but I haven't a clue about gluten status. I currently use olay sensitive skin (no help to you, sorry), but in the past I've used neutrogena daily defense. I have really sensitive skin and it worked well.

Have you tried any clinique stuff? Much of it is hypoallergenic...

Burt's Bees has a bunch of skin stuff you might want to check out, also.

I believe that Cetaphil only gauratees there face wash to be safe and nothing else. Oil of Olay will not guarantee their products to be gluten-free as well due to outsourcing materials. I use Neutrogena, they can send you a big list for their gluten-free products, i still have to come across one that has Gluten in it. They have one for sensitive skin. I also use Kiss MY Face products, organic as they come. Check out their website, i think its just kissmyface.com They have a list of products that do contain gluten, but the majority of them dont. They have a great olive oil lotion.

Oh man, that is rough! I am great actually (at least I am working on convincing myself that I am great!). How are YOU? Are you getting some relief these days?

And not to get off the topic at hand, Mary Kay cosmetics are "hypo-allergenic" also. That term just means free of common allergens, and is actually thrown around a lot! LOL I have had an issue with some things at certian times, and then they didn't bother me later. My derm says that the skin is an organ, like any other, and can be super sensitive depending on the diet, time of year, time of month, etc. Just food for thought.

trying not to get too off topic, for those with multiple allergies (gluten, dairy, corn, soy, etc.) what lotions do you use for your face or body? I've never had DH so I don't have to worry about that but I figure I should look into changing a couple things I've put off since going gluten-free in January since I'm not quite getting healthy yet.. I looked at a bunch of "healthy" lotions when I was out earlier and it looked like most had suspicious ingredients for at least one of the allergens I'm avoiding... I saw lecithin listed in a couple which I'm assuming is soy lecithin since there's no other lecithin I know of...

as for the Eucerin, I got the following response from them in February regarding their Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Hand Creme product:

"Although our products may not contain the above ingredients [gluten ingredients], it is always possible that one of our raw materials may contain traces of gluten because its presence is not excluded by our raw material specifications."

I'm not advising anyone not to use Eucerin by any means, just sharing the company's response, which is the same response I got from a number of companies which get raw ingredients from outside companies..

Hello,

I'm new to this board and so I hope I'm not repeating this information. Lingonberries is a gluten-free store in Vancouver, WA. My son happened to be driving through so he brought back a few things for me, including moisturizer, shampoo and conditioner. I love all three products - am having no problems with them. Now I plan to drive down and browse myself this weekend! I know you can purchase online here: Open Original Shared Link. The nice thing is that it appears that you can buy small sizes of personal care products and try them before a big 8 oz purchase. Do you want me to look at the bottle and see what the ingredients are?

I have checked Purpose face moisturizer and do not see any presence of gluten I use it every day and love it!

Now, a few months ago I called Olay and asked about their SPF 15 and 30 moisturizing lotions (sensitive skin) and was told they were gluten free. Is this not the case?

Hi Fiddle Faddle

I have very sensitive skin and roseaca. I've been using Zia Moisturizing Cleanser--and find that I don't really need a daily moisturizer. At night, I use Zia Ultimate Night Renewal. My skin feels clean, yet smooth and not dry. My roseaca is also much better--only really noticeable if I've been out in the sun. I can't say enough about the stuff.

I have found it at Whole Foods, Wegman's, and at my local health food store. Here's a link--

I love Mary Kay's Time Wise. It's for those of us with older, I mean more mature skin. :D

LOL! I am going to be 24 in Sept, and I use it already. I don't want to have "more mature" skin!

You maybe right - my info is from the beginning of the year. It may have changed. I will double check. Thanks for that info...

Procter & Gamble makes Olay products, and they give a CYA response for all of their products, but the ingredients are fine. I think they will clearly list. At any rate, I haven't had a problem.

CarlaB recommends coconut oil as a moisturizer... I've not tried it yet myself but am about to go shopping & FINALLY remembered to put it on my list! Thanks for the reminder!

Im just thinking here... I thought P&G response also included that they get some of their raw materials from an outside source thats is why they cant guarantee them to be gluten-free (ie the fragrance) Same goes for the Pantene products they make.

Unless something has changed, which I will find out cause I emailed them again.

Ill let you know!!!!

Be cautious with vitamin D if you are female and post-menopausal.  I had to decrease my D dosage from 4000 IU/day to 2000 IU because of hormonal acne and unwanted facial hair - likely from an increased testosterone level from the D.  Finally relief!  I hope to keep my D level below 50 nm/l now.

Do you eat processed gluten free foods?

You may want to wear an N-95 mask to filter out any possible gluten, at least when you handle the flour.

It sounds like you've been on quite the journey trying to understand your symptoms and diagnosis. It’s great that you’re planning to consult a doctor for allergy testing, as distinguishing between a wheat allergy, celiac disease, or another gluten-related condition is crucial for moving forward. The fact that you’ve tolerated barley and wheat products without recent symptoms might suggest something other than celiac disease, but as you noted, the absence of immediate symptoms doesn’t necessarily rule out potential underlying damage, especially if celiac disease is still a possibility. It’s worth discussing whether you should undergo updated testing, such as genetic testing for celiac markers (HLA-DQ2/DQ8), or even revisiting an endoscopy if appropriate. In the meantime, keep documenting your experiences with food and symptoms—it could provide valuable insights for your healthcare provider. It’s also important to test for other possible causes of your original symptoms, like IBS, food intolerances, or even other autoimmune conditions, to ensure nothing is overlooked.

Your daughter's results, along with her symptoms and family history, certainly suggest further investigation for celiac disease is warranted. The low total IgA can explain why some IgA-based tests, like tTG-IgA, are negative, as there's simply not enough IgA in her system for reliable results. The weak positive tTG-IgG is notable, especially with her symptoms and the vitamin D deficiency, which is common in celiac disease due to malabsorption. I’d recommend discussing these results with her doctor or a gastroenterologist. They may suggest an endoscopy with biopsy for a definitive diagnosis or explore other potential causes for her symptoms. Meanwhile, keeping a food and symptom diary can help track patterns until a formal diagnosis is made. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease.
