Reflux Came Back/got Worse After Gluten?

My son has had reflux since he was 6 weeks old. He had, I thought, outgrown it but it seems to have come back recently and I'm wondering if it can come back with gluten exposure?

Does this seem possible? When he had his endoscopy the did note some damage from reflux, but he was getting better at that time and had not had a problem until about last week. I think he did get into the dog food and also had some diarrhea to go along with the reflux. I guess I'm just maybe hoping that this is gluten related and he is just having his reflux flare up again for no reason.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this!

By the way, this is my son who had ALL negative tests and seems so much healthier off gluten. Go figure! :-)

I would think it is very possible. I know I read somewhere (actually I think it was a response to something I posted somewhere on this board) that acid reflux is a symptom of gluten intolerance. And especially if he is having D to go along with it I would suspect gluten.

When I had my endoscopy done, the GI said I had significant damage from acid reflux - although I rarely if ever felt the effects of it. I have noticed that since going gluten-free, I HAVE felt it the few times I have accidentally eaten something that turns out to have hidden gluten in it.

I also tested negative. The positive results I'm getting since changing my diet are more than enough to convince me that the Dr.'s way of testing for this is basically USELESS. ;)

My first Big symptom of Celiac was really bad reflux that was uncontrollable with medication. Now I don't get it unless I get exposed to gluten. If i get exposed to gluten it often comes back for a few days or a week, then goes away once its out of my system.

I know that my reflux get really bad when I've been exposed to gluten (it's much better when I'm gluten-free).

My son is 15 months old and has reflux as well. After going gluten-free he has been doing a lot better. Last weekend he must have gotten into something too since he had D and also spit up a couple of times. He is still taking 20mg's of Prilosec to prevent damage in his esophagus.

Thanks for all the replies. Actually, in a funny way I am glad that this probably is gluten-related because then we know what we need to do to fix it. If it were just a flare up of some kind I would be more frustrated not knowing what was causing it.

We are probably in for more, however, because we visited dd's new preschool today and he took a big bite out of the homemade playdough that they had sitting out. All of the sudden my husband was saying, "I think he's eating some of the playdough." He already had two messing diapers which were probably from that. It is much easier to keep the older ones gluten free!

Anyway, thank you for your help!

My daughter has horrible reflux and it gets sooooo much worse with gluten exposure.

I get horrible reflux when I'm glutened and it lasts for about two weeks. It may sound strange, but I tried drinking a tablespoon of vinegar when it happened in it was gone in a few minutes. I realized it was due to too little acid, and not too much.

      As Scott suggests, look into dermatitis herpetiformis. Also the rash there could be from SIBO small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or candida. If your regular doc won't investigate those possibilities, consider going to a naturopathic doc or integrative medicine doc.

      Your son has two positive blood tests for celiac disease, plus a positive biopsy for it...why hasn't your doctor diagnosed him with celiac disease, which is the most likely diagnosis based on the test results you shared? The next step should be a gluten-free diet, which your doctor already recommended.

      I am glad to hear you are not taking acid blocking meds as they increase gut PH which inhibits mineral absorption which, in turn, often causes the body to rob it's own bones of the calcium it needs for various metabolic processes. I was asking about that because acid reflux is very common in the celiac community.
