Itching (but No Rash) After Glutening

Last night I went out to a local mexican joint, and ordered grilled chicken with rice and refried beans.

Last time I ate there I got sick, but I assumed it was from the tortillas since they are made on the same press as the flour ones, and since corn sometimes makes my tummy unhappy.

This time I didn't eat the tortillas.

I still got sick. By sick I mean explosive diarrhea and bloating and tummy cramping.

By the time I got home my body was itching all over. It still itches today. There is no rash that is noticeable. I don't think I have DH have never noticed anything unusual on my skin other than little bumps I've always had on my upper arms but I think that's normal.

Is it possible the itching could be related to gluten intolerance? (I am not yet diagnosed)

I think the itching has to be connected.

I get the itching with no rash or skin redness--it's gotten better the longer I'm gluten-free and have fewer reactions.

I also use laundry detergents with no dyes or perfumes like All or Purex Free and Clear. That helps, too :)

I'm not sure about the connection, but I do know that refried beans can contain flour so that may explain your glutening.

I do feel a bit itchy after glutening. I never get a rash and luckily the itching isn't too bad for me.

Also if the broth they used to make the spanish rice has gluten in it, I have a hard time finding gluten-free spanish rice.

I get itching with no rash, uncontrollable embarrassing itching all over my body, from my scalp to the bottom of my feet.

Oh wow - I'm not alone!

Yes I'm sure I was glutened via a) the marinade for the chicken, B) the beans or c) the broth the rice was made in. Either way, I won't be eating there again (sadly)

I'm kind of relieved to know that it could be gluten-related and I'm not just going crazy!

I will take some Benadryl tonight - The itching is bad, and it literally affects me from my scalp to my feet. Argh!

Some people react to the Casein in dairy the same as to gluten, like me.  I avoid dairy avidly because I get ataxia so bad. Some Celiac people produce tTg 6 antibodies in response to gluten or casein.  tTg 2 antibodies are what blood tests for Celiac measure.  tTg 6 antibodies are also found in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, contributing to ataxia.  Have you been checked for tTg 6 antibodies?

I agree that you were not eating sufficient gluten prior to your endoscopy.

What supplement do you use and how much?

Hi Knitty Kitty,  Thanks for sending all of these articles.  Some of them are too complex for me to parse.  That said, I had extensive blood tests done when the ataxia started.  I was a little low on Vit. D.  My doc thought I might be low on Vit. K.  But no.  K levels were completely normal as were all of my B Vits. levels.  I take a D supplement but even with that, if I have lactose, I start to feel my head get inflamed.  It is what it is.

@Soleihey, Do get checked for thiamine deficiency.  Blood tests for thiamine deficiency are not accurate.  You can have "normal" levels in the blood, but still be deficient because thiamine stores inside cells are depleted.  Thiamine deficiency can cause ataxia, tremor, muscle twitching, leg weakness, constipation, and slurred speech.  I had these symptoms and more that did not resolve with a one a day type vitamin.  I needed high doses of Thiamine to correct the deficiency.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Pregnancy can deplete thiamine stores.   Interesting Reading: Thiamine deficiency disorders: a clinical perspective https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8451766/
