So I hate to ask but has anyone else done this?

Basically I have been good and clear of gluten for about a year now. And then the other day I just odrered a bucket of KFC.. and about 1 hour later I order a regular pizza.

What the heck was I doing??? I'm "mostly" feeling ok, but just wondering if anyone else has done something stupid like this.'

Nope, not worth the 8 days of illness I'd pay with!! Anytime I even think about it, I think back to when I had to go on a gluten challenge for my testing!

jerseyangel Proficient

Good God, no! It's been 14 months for me, and I'm just now beginning to make some progress with my Celiac, not to mention the other intolerances it caused.

As good as that stuff tasted, I just won't jepordize the progress I have made, and risk having to do any of it over again. ;)

If I was going to cheat, it sure wouldn't be for junk food.

tiffjake Enthusiast

Ive done it, and I paid for it. Now, when there is an accidental gluten-ing, I feel terrible, and I remember that when I WANT something....

Ursa Major Collaborator

Yes, I have done it, because I have so many intolerances (and no official diagnosis, just my own dietary tests), I doubted my own diagnosis and did that. I got sick, of course.

Another time I got glutened because of my family not caring, and thought, "What the heck, I am glutened already, and nobody cares anyway, I might as well go for it!" And pigged out on stuff with gluten.

But I don't think I'll do that again, because it isn't worth it. The 'revenge' for others glutening me won't hurt them, but me. That's just stupid! :o

There are some days I crave a gluten pizza because I can smell it, or chinese dumplings. Then I think about how a few grains make me sick, my DH breaks out on my skin and I look like a leper. I think about all the pain and I say to myself, "no way." I walk away from it and always glad I did.

Rusla, I'm with you , the smell of fresh pizza!!!!!!!!!!!That's about all I can say I truly miss...But I will not risk it either, it's to me like a trying to commit a deadly act of violence on myself...

Willpower is about all that's left for some of us...I went to the school of hard knocks a couple of times at first with the envelope licking & then the communion wafer...

A year after going gluten-free, I ate a gluten dinner. I had taken Pepto before, during and after. I did not get sick. Two weeks later, I did it again, I felt only slightly sick. I did it about a month later, THEN I felt sick. Also, shortly after I was so stupid, I started to notice some slight neurological problems. They grew more pronounced over time. Less then a year after I was so dumb with the gluten eating, I received the neurogical diagnosis that I now have to live with. Would I be so stupid again NEVER. Were those 3 dinners worth what I now live with - NO!!

ianm Apprentice

Nope, no way! The smell of gluten foods makes me want to barf. The brain fog is not worth it and I can't afford to lose my job because of it.

Initally I did a couple of times, but the sickness I had just was not worth the taste.

Kentucky-Fried Pizza???? Now you're talking...!

Just kidding.

Wow, glutening yourself aside, that's a lot of food! Even someone without celiacs could get sick from all that grease and stuff.

Remember, you are not cheating...well, maybe cheating YOURSELF out of a healthy, pain-free existence. Of course it's easy for me to say. If I even eat a small amount of some of the things I am allergic to I can die of anaphelectic shock. I don't know what would happen if I didn't have life threatening allergies.

I think I wouldn't eat it still because I just got over the gluten challenge, and just had tiny amounts of barely for it, and the stomach aches and diarreah and depression and skin rashes were almost too much to bare.

Hang in there, and stay true.

Rachel--24 Collaborator

I've never cheated.....its been over a year for me and I just dont see myself ever doing it. I'm still not healthy and I definately dont wanna go backwards. I see and smell stuff all day at work that I really would love to eat but the fear wins out every time.

Ursa Major Collaborator
The consequence for me was a night spent on a pit toilet. Aaagh! Dreadful and completely horrible. Honestly, it was nightmare experience, what with the creatures and the smell and the embarrassment, and I will not do that to myself again.

In a way it's been good, because my husband's gone from being supportive, to being as paranoid as me. He doesn't want to have to be there holding the flash-light. :D

Now that really made me laugh, Matilda! Even tough I am sure it wasn't funny at the time, but the image of you sitting on the pit toilet, with your husband holding the flashlight, mosquitoes trying to get you, bears and wolves around (okay, I'm exaggerating) cracks me up.

I was at a food fair today tasting samples of this and that, brought my own crackers and everything, and was asking the vendors about wheat when appropriate. One sausage vendor had sausage with wheat and sausage without and also a kale sausage soup that was absolutely delicious, until I came upon the wheaty sausage in the bite that I had just taken. So, in the middle of the food fair, I swallowed the bite rather than making a small scene and threw out the rest of it, maybe a tablespoon or so. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant right on the ocean where I ordered steamed clams and french fries, knowing full well that the oil was probably cc'd, but I figured that since I'd already been glutened, hey, what the heck. So, yes, I've kind of done what you've done on a small scale and so far, so good, but geez, no, after what I've been through the last week in terms of not being completely healed, I'd never intentionally do it. I hope we're both doing okay in the short-term upcoming! KFC makes me break out in hives from the MSG anyhow. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. Sometimes we forget and feed our bodies when our mind is what needs feeding or convincing. :)

You know what, in the case of getting accidentally glutened, and knowing it, I probably would "just do it" since even a little makes me sick, I would make it worth it. I don't recommend anyone else doing it though. I seriously would not do it on purpose. The neuro problems are so bad, plus days on a john, just isn't worth it. Food is not a sport. Eat to live, not live to eat. Life is to live, enjoy it painfree as much as possible, it is just too darn short. :D

oh gosh I'm not even tempted to cheat, I equate all gluten with POISON so my mind stops me from even remotely considering the possibility! My daughter on the other hand grabbed an oreo from a classmate about a year after going gluten-free and she was in the bathroom within minutes... it was enough to convince her to not do that again. At least for a while. She will probably try to cheat as a teenager, but it's my job to teach her why she shouldn't and how to handle situations when I'm not around to intervene for her.

It's your body, and you can do with it what you want, but I will advise you to adopt a zero tolerance policy on gluten consumption. Do you really want to increase your risk for certain lymphomas and other autoimmune disorders? I don't.

So glad to hear I'm not the only one who cheats. I've never had that much all at once but until recentely it wouldn't be uncommon for me to have 3-4 sandwiches/ burgers a week. I don't usually get ill as long as I space it out but have been feeling major guilt. Had a resonably good week this week tho, the only major thing I had was one piece of bread. Big Achievment for me. There were a few other things but they werent major. (yes I do know that it is still bad)

Absolutely...

The times I have cheated have been AFTER an accidental glutening.

The excuse is usually, I'll be ill for 1-2 weeks ANYWAY.. so make the most of today but then I seriously do try and make it worth it ... like real Pizza in Naples....

KFC... works pretty good homemade gluten-free... so that wouldn't be my idea of making the most of it....

I am self diagnosed, and have been gluten free since Aug 1st. Well Friday night I wanted pizza so bad, and I was beginning to doubt myself, so I ate some.. and I tell ya what, I don't think I will ever do it again on purpose. I have felt horrible all weekend. But for me it was just a test, and I believe I was right with the gluten intolerant.

I also craved pizza for a while after going gluten-free and if you watch any tv, those ubiquitous Pizza Hut commercials are just torture. Try making a gluten-free pizza, either with the Chebe mix or a gluten-free recipe and enjoy, enjoy! I bought Bette Hagman's cookbooks soon after my quasi-diagnosis and it has made all the difference...I can now make corndogs, pigs in blankets, all kinds of breads, muffins, flour tortillas, pasta, "cheezits", "ritz crackers", "hot pockets", English muffins, basically anything that I have a hankering for on any given day. They taste so much better than almost all of the store-bought gluten-free products, the sour-dough bread I made was just to die for. The key, for me at least, is being somewhat organized, as in devoting a day every once in a while to baking, some freezer space and the realization that you don't need to feel deprived. Even if you're not a cook, there are gluten-free pizza crusts and a whole lot of other products out there to be bought at the stores, if you look hard enough, even in Downeast Maine. Welcome to the forum, finding this place is one of the best steps! :)

Okay now you'll all know what a freek I am, its gotta come out....I don't even like pizza, matter of fact I sorta hate it, never have either. LOL :D:D Felt good to confess, everyones always talking about pizza! No I haven't cheated. I look at it the same way I do about how I quit smoking 2 years ago. Why would I want to go through all that withdrawl and torture, just to turn around and do it again?

The easiest way to remember the difference between the cholesterol types is HDL;   H=healthy equals healthy (omega 3, 7, limit 6 & 9 MCFA'S =Medium Chain Fatty Acids. 3= coconut oil, 7= sunflower oil, avocado. The higher your HDL the healthier you are & less likely to experience strokes, clogged arteries Etc. You can even use cold expeller pressed coconut oil on your skin and that is the best kind of coconut oil to eat as well. You want your HDL much higher than your LDL, it will help you stay healthy.   LDL;    L=Lousy. Meat fats, processed fats.  The higher your LDL is the more likely you will have strokes, clogged artery is, heart disease, fatty liver.   Then there's lipids... they are the culprit to be blamed for many heart attacks and things like that they are very small round particles that transport fats. You can have a low overall cholesterol reading and most of it be healthy cholesterol and have a ton of lipids and there's nothing you can do to change the lipid count. High number of lipids is very dangerous.   I'm going on statins is extremely dangerous if you ask me it's just completely my opinion, because I have seen so many of my elderly friends bleed to death internally because of the statins. I mean you wouldn't take all the oil and grease out of your car or a motorcycle and then try to drive it that way would you? You see that's what statins do they remove all of your bodies fats and it doesn't matter whether it's healthy fats or a lousy fats. It removes all of them and then your body can't function properly. You have to have fats to keep your skin supple and to stay warm. Your body also needs fats to digest & process certain nutrients, amino acids & vitamins.   Your brain is composed of fat so is that something you really want to remove with a pill every morning and night?   The thing about statins is that they also make the blood vessels and capillaries permeable. So this is how my friends who were on cardiac medication for a long time and statins ended up bleeding internally to death.   If you want to make sure that your heart is healthy, take odorless garlic at night and magnesium, vitamin K & calcium.

It's also a symptom of EPI.

Yes.  Proportionately a small piece to a toddler is like a whole slice to an adult.  This is an important clue.  She was doing well, accidentally ate gluten and later the old behavior returned. I remember reading posts here of people reacting to a kiss from someone who had just eaten gluten. Recent research indicates that 40% of first degree relatives of someone with Celiac have undiagnosed Celiac Disease.  Father, mother, siblings.  There is a whole list of symtoms of "silent celiac".  Here is an article of symptoms possibly mistaken for other causes than Celiac Disease.  When I finally stopped gluten at 63 years old, I counted 19 things that improved, including lifelong mouthbreathing.  I never smelled bad things, so I as a kid, I learned to respond to the other kid's response in order to not seem weird. I really recommend you pursue testing for all the family if you can, and the whole family following GFD.  It is difficult at first, but the benefits will be worth it.

I get these but where we are, they are called chicken potstickers. I would obviously suggest that it is the ginger in the product that is causing a stimulative digestive effect! So you might want to do what I do, just cook one of them with the rest of your meal so you don't have the same effect. I love the Feel Good products but they are on the expensive side. (I also drink Reed's ginger brew so in general, ginger is a friend of mine..when delivered at the right dose). Hope this helps and have a warm healthy week!

Has anyone had Steatorrhea (oily/fatty poop) as a temporary glutening symptom or should I be concerned I've introduced chronic gluten somewhere (like in meds)? I haven't gotten Steatorrhea since before I went gluten free. However, I moved in the past few weeks and haven't been as careful - I've eaten at restauraunts with cross contamination but only experienced minor symptoms like headache. The past week, I ate only gluten free food at home except I went to Red Robin and got fries (told them gluten-free; allergy). The next day I had Steatorrhea and the day after that.   I know it's a symptom of malabsorption so I was wondering if it was the kind of thing that could be caused by one event or if it was due to a more chronic issue. Of course I will speak to a GI but I recently moved and need to find one.   Thank you for any info
