havent posted for a while could do with someinteraction on this. about a year ago i had my nipple pierced ( hurt but ok ) it all healed nicely but about 3 weeks ago i had a small lump appear on my breast by the piercing, it was painful and a bit of goo was coming out of the nipple, anyway the doc gave me antibioics ( 500mg- 4 times a day called fluoxocillin) finished the course but i feel even worse and the pain and the goo is still there, also it has left me feeling sick, bloated and really tired and a major case of thrush that you wouldnt believe  seriously its aggoniseing.dont know what to do at this stage, dont want another dose of useless antibioics and my thrush still has gone so i feel trapped, plus what do i do about my breast? any ideas anyone  ive heard about an iv thrush medication that they treat cronic patinets with and am thinking of asking for it, has anyone heard of it.

Have you removed the nipple-ring (don't really know what you call them). Could there be something in the metal bothering you? I would talk to your doctor again.

Go back to the doctor for a different/stronger treatment. I wouldn't worry about thrush until the basic infection is taken care of...you don't want to let an infection go on...it could cause serious damage to the tissue, and could lead to a systemic infection.

maybe the antibiotics you took weren't gluten free? i have had a few friends who got their nipples peirced and oh gosh did they say it hurt. it definitely sounds infected as you already know. i have had a few piercings in my day and the best thing for me was to soak it in a 3:1 ratio of sea salt to water. And if the infection doesn't clear some hydrogen peroxide has helped (which is definitely gluten free). If you haven't already checked the meds the dr. gave you for the infection I would say start there. I found out I was allergic to penecillian after getting my wisdom teeth out so you never know!!

hi carla, i really didnt want to take it out in fact it broke my heart to as i really love it but my friend came over and saw the state i was in and rang a body piercing studio and thay said it sounded like my piercing wasnt done properly and my body was rejecting the ring but cos it wasnt pierced properly it made my nipple go bad so he took it out, and by the way i SCREAMED my head off with pain as it came out  i have never felt so much pain in all my life, as it came out it bled which i thought was odd in that it didne bleed when i had it pireced in the begining. the pain and the lump is still there tho.

i was wondering about the antibioics as well, dont know if thay are gluten-free, i saw a different doctor than my usual one so maybe that one could have been missed. the sea salt is a good one and ive started that one.

OUCH!

I've had so many infections in my ears over the years that I never got anything else pierced ... I can really only wear earrings with thin wires, anything else and it gets infected. Based on that, I think some people must just be sensitive to it, then again, it may have been done wrong (whatever that means! ;) ).

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Hi Taz,I haven't got any advice as such -but just to point out that all prescription drugs are gluten-free in the UK-although they may contain lactose (The pharmacist who dispensed them should be able to tell you what if any allergens are in the ingredients)

Hope you feel better soon

:)

Thrush is candida, so you probably want to be aware of the possibility of candida problems from the antibiotics -- I think that means you should at least take a probiotic to help restore the good bacteria in your system. However, there are a lot of other, better informed, people on this board who've dealth with candida, so you should do a search and see what you turn up.

I WAS WONDERING HOW LONG FROM THE TIME YOU HAD IT PIERCED UNTIL THE TIME YOU NOTICED THE LUMP AND THE GOO? DID THE GOO HAVE AN ODOR AND/OR COLOR? AND BEING AS THAT I'M A PIERCER/CUSTOM TATTOO DESIGENER, MY BIGGEST QUESTION WOULD BE DID YOU GET IT DONE IN A SHOP WITH A GOOD REPUTATION, AND A CLEEN RECORD FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT?

There could be many things going on here simultaneously.

The lump and the goo might be a cyst. With fibrocystic breast disease, there can be lumps, and various shades of goo depending on whether the lump is in a milk duct, or if there's an infection, etc.

Many people on this site (but by no means a majority) are either allergic or hypersensitive to metal. Some report improvement on a gluten-free diet. Piercing an extremely sensitive area of the body might trigger this kind of reaction where you had none before (say, to ear-rings)

The piercing site may be infected.

I know you said you love it, but you may have to remove it to keep the infection from doing permanent damage (if it is infected, which sounds likely).

I don't think you got rid of the infection and sadly you have to get back on the anti-bac.s. Get to doctor and deal with it because it will only get worse. Then when your done with the meds get a good gluten free and it helps if you can eat sugar free yogurt. Just plain yogurt. It will bring the balance back in your intestines. You will of killed off all the bad but good bacteria taking the anti-bac.s.

Good advice. Drink kifir, too, as it's a different bacteria than yogurt. The combo would be good for you. With candida the cravings for sweets is horrible! Don't give in! All sugar and simple carbs will feed the yeast, you want to starve them. Eat protein and veggies, maybe some whole grain rice, but do not eat simple carbs and feed the yeast! Use lots of coconut oil, it's good for candida problems. Onions and garlic kill off candida, too.

diflucan is the anti-fungal med that the ped gi gave my girls when they got esophageal thrush----it is pretty good stuff.

If you have been eating the gluten equivalent of 4-6 slices of wheat bread daily for say, 4 weeks, I think a repeat blood test would be valid.
    • englishbunny
it did include Total Immunoglobin A which was 135, and said to be in normal range. when i did the blood test in January I would say I was on a "light' gluten diet, but def not gluten free.  I didn't have any clue about the celiac thing then.  Since then I have been eating a tonne of gluten for the purpose of the endoscopy....so I'm debating just getting my blood test redone right away to see if it has changed so I'm not waiting another month...

Welcome to the forum, @englishbunny! Did your celiac panel include a test for "Total IGA"? That is a test for IGA deficiency. If you are IGA deficient, other IGA test resultls will likely be falsely low. Were you by any chance already practicing a reduced gluten free diet when the blood draw was done?

I'm upset & confused and really need help finding a new gastro who specializes in celiac in California.  Also will welcome any insights on my results. I tested with an isolated positive for deamidated IGA a few months ago (it was 124.3, all other values on celiac panel <1.0), I also have low ferritin and Hashimotos. Mild gastro symptoms which don't seem to get significantly worse with gluten but I can't really tell... my main issues being extreme fatigue and joint pain. The celiac panel was done by my endocrinologist to try and get to the bottom of my fatigue and I was shocked to have a positive result. Just got negative biposy result from endoscopy. Doctor only took two biopsies from small intestine (from an area that appeared red), and both are normal. Problem is his Physician's Assistant can't give me an answer whether I have celiac or not, or what possible reason I might have for having positive antibodies if I don't have it. She wants me to retest bloods in a month and says in the meantime to either "eat gluten or not, it's up to you, but your bloodwork won't be accurate if you don't" I asked if it could be I have early stage celiac so the damage is patchy and missed by only having two samples taken, and she said doctor would've seen damaged areas when performing endoscopy (?) and that it's a good sign if my whole intestine isn't damaged all over, so even if there is spotty damage I am fine.  This doesn't exactly seem satisfactory, and seems to be contrary to so much of the reading and research I have done. I haven't seen the doctor except at my endoscopy, and he was pretty arrogant and didn't take much time to talk. I can't see him or even talk to him for another month. I'm really confused about what I should do. I don't want to just "wait and see" if I have celiac and do real damage in the meantime. Because I know celiac is more that just 'not eating bread' and if I am going to make such a huge lifestyle adjustment I need an actual diagnosis. So in summary I want to find another doctor in CA, preferably Los Angeles but I don't care at this stage if they can do telehealth! I just need some real answers from someone who doesn't talk in riddles. So recommendations would be highly welcomed. I have Blue Shield CA insurance, loads of gastros in LA don’t take insurance at all 😣

Okay, Lori, we can agree on the term "gluten-like". My concern here is that you and other celiacs who do experience celiac reactions to other grains besides wheat, barley and rye are trying to make this normative for the whole celiac community when it isn't. And using the term "gluten" to refer to these other grain proteins is going to be confusing to new celiacs trying to figure out what grains they actually do need to avoid and which they don't. Your experience is not normative so please don't proselytize as if it were.
