So the first night I pre-looked over the menu at the place we were going to be eating and they had roasted chicken with a vegetable and I thought, perfect! It comes out breaded ....who has ever heard of a roasted chicken that is breaded?? That's like an oxymoron

Then the second night I was talking to the waitress about wheat allergy/gluten intolerance and asked her a bunch of questions for the manager (i.e. dedicated fryer for fries, wheat ingredients in the hamburger patties, could I just get a plain grilled chicken breast, etc) She comes back and says, "the manager can say with somewhat certainty the hamburger patties don't have gluten but not sure about the bun..." You know, I think it's a bit different in California.....lots of nouvelle cuisine/bistro cuisine, people really are a bit more up on things, and these days I rarely encounter such idiocy as you describe (it's even LESS likely in the larger and WAY MORE COOL cities than this hell hole )

I'm sorry that happened for you.....but Nik is right, the more you eat out, the easier it is, and I"ve found that the tiny/private restaurants/bistros are very safe.

sillies - I have not been taking care of myself - - eating CRAP Very lazy about my diet (strict gluten avoidance, but wayyyyyyy too much sugar-y stuff and crap - not enough cooking - too many dinners of TJ's mini chicken tacos and stuff like taht)

It's caught up with me - have to go on MASSIVELY healthy detox diet now. I think I am seriously addicted to sugar Two weekends in a row I have eaten a whole pan of brownies and it's been YEARS since I've done that.

I did get my period three days early, though, which explains some of it

anywho, I feel like RUBBISH and must turn this around tout-sweet - - going to be hard giving up the sugar, esp. since the boys at work just got a HUGE case of Dove Chocs.......

Julie!! I have been thinking 'bout you! Just now in the shower (honest to gawd) I reminded meselph to send you a note so see if all was well. I also wanted to tell you that I was out near Ulta on Saturday, so (natch) I went in and they had the Kurl Karma! Love it!! It's creamier than the Curlinterrupted, and I think slightly better suited to my finer, thinner hair. (end of hair tawk)

Thanks for the info on the Kurl Karma. I really want to try that one as well, not so sure I like the CurlInterrupted on me hair. I plan to pick up the Kurl Karma sometime this week and give it a test run, I'll let you know what I think. Other than that I might have to go to their gel or mousse (if they don't have gluten in it). I also might try the smoothing line just for kicks, again if the ingredients are acceptable.

I've been using Brocato hair products. I phound out about them at the salon where I had me Deva cut last month. Julie told me that they were available at Ulta (and more resonably priced than at the salon).

I use the Splassh shampoo and conditioner--which is a good basic everyday shampoo/conditioner, and the two curl balms that I mentioned. None of these have gluten--some of their stuff does.

Me too, I like it. Very good prices at Ulta also for great big containers, they often run sales and send out a coupon in the Sun papers.

Good return policy as well, they let you try it and you can always return it if you don't like it/doesn't work for you.

I have been using the Splassh s & c and then once a week use the Saturate (more moisturizing formula).

I think they have a smoothing line too that i mentioned wanting to try, Suze that might work for you??

I'm sorry that happened for you.....but Nik is right, the more you eat out, the easier it is, and I"ve found that the tiny/private restaurants/bistros are very safe.

I must say, Nik, that when we were in London I was very impressed with how knowledgeable ALL of the restaurants were that we visited. I think all of the servers knew what the words "celiac" and "gluten" meant - - unlike here - - and we seemed to have much less trouble finding gluten-free choices there than over here.

Hi y'all! No measurable snow here....just nasty bitter cold wind! Not a pleasant day here. All of this talk of eating rats and squirrels brings to mind Euell Gibbons and Living off the Land!!! I tried lots of things..but mostly plant - stuff. Did you know that Nettles and Milkweed are actually pretty good? (By the way E. Gibbons made his big splash in the 70's). I did not eat rats or squirrels....which as far as I'm concerned are pretty much the same thing!

Em- THIS is absolutely incredible! I'm speechless!

Lots happening around here. DD and her boyfriend, David have an apartment together. David has been working as a substitute teacher. He obviously won't be able to work over the summer, and the economy the way it is.......it'll be hard for him to find something. David is like family, and in hard times......you take care of your own. So hubby offered to let them live with us to save money. With snow days and holidays, it's been tough going for them, too....so they're going to move in next month.

I think this is happening more and more. Not that I'm happy with the economy, but in some ways, it's kind of nice. My cousins built a duplex in their mom's backyard (years ago)- it's like their own compound. Would love my sister to live closer (so I could steal my goonies more often)!

I think eating out gluten-free gets easier the more you do it - the more you do it, the easier it gets to ask questions/get a feel for a place AND not feel like you're a pain in their arse (which of course we are NOT, but you know what I mean)

It does get easier but usually takes a lot of splainin! I agree- I have MUCH better luck at small places with chefs as opposed to cooks.

Ju-lee...I sympathize with the restaraunt thing. Around here, when we were attempting to still eat out, I've gotten some really strange comments. Even had one manager tell me...."Oh, my husband had that but he got over it!".....after they poisoned me. (This was in an Outback that has a gluten-free menu). "Oh...you can't have potatoes..right?" I love the way they set the bread directly in front of you after you tell them you can't have it...and the croutons on the salads.....We do NOT go out to anyplace anymore...have not in about a year...I'm too paranoid

And the way Ontario now has its graduated licensing in place, kids who get their learner's permit at 16 aren't driving independently for two years afterward - - until they're 18. SO. . ......... .. they really begin to drink and drive in earnest at about the same time. . .. . .....

I think the drinking age should invariably come two years before the driving age. Most people have burned themselves out by then on binge drinking, and those who haven't, will just drive drunk anyway. It's so strange that our driving age is 16, smoking/lotto 18, and drinking 21. You get a deadly weapon before you can smoke a bloody cigarette whilst scratching a lotto ticket?!?!?!?

I was a soccer mom for many years, but hardly stereotypical. No van.....no short hair. Kids would ask me if I was a hippy .....mind you , they have no clue what a hippy really looks like!

Tinkerbell is an indoor cat, but she did find a mouse in the house once and put it in DD's shoe!

Speaking of rashes and pain....when DD got tested for Lupus, it did come back positive for the skin version. DD was given topical cream and an oral prescription of some kind. The pills seem to help, but she still occassionally gets a HORRIBLE itch that is so bad it brings her to sobbing tears............and it is not where there is a rash........nothing. Now the derm thinks maybe it's not lupus. Jeez..........the first diagnosis before that was scabies..........WRONG ....so it's a vicious cycle of misdiagnoses!
