Wow! Definitely a good call. Are you gluten-free all the time, Nik, or just with the family?

Yeah, Nik, that was my question.... . ......and didn't you say that you were diagnosed at one point with something gastrointestinal, IBS er sumfin'? I was sure I read you saying something like this, long ago.. ..... ..

DD came traipsing into the kitchen this am and mumbled, "Happy Birthday. Can you give me a drive to school? And I need a new hair dryer.....mine is starting to stink like burning rubber".

The Ripper followed a few minutes later, and said nothing.

I heard mad whispering in the other room, then he wanders back in...."Happy Birthday, Mom. But, like, it's not ever really HAPPY anymore, is it?"

Ummmmm, probably around 95% gluten-free I'd say.

E.g if I eat out with girlfriends...... not often.. but of course I don't worry about the finer points (CC, 'may contain' ..etc)

Yup  ...me bowel is irritable

Anemia was one of me first symptoms from years ago--stymied doctors-- and all the tests they did never did uncover a problem.......said it was because I was a woman <_<

Um...... . . . .. . . low iron. . . ........bowel acting irritably.... . . .........if it looks like a duck. . ........

Actually, it wouldn't be weird at all! How many humans on earth cannot tolerate gluten, to some degree? Half?

And DH and I are just one couple that I know, of a few now, where both are celic.

You've always been one of us, Nik!! :D:P

When you think about it, they say that 97% of Celiacs are undiagnosed......

It was TOOOO PURTY not to copy!!!!!!!! :)

One of my birthdays . . . hubby was gone on a business trip. Kids were about 2 1/2 and 4. I made myself an angel food cake (before Skeeter was gluten-free). Well, you have to let those rest upside down on a bottle so I had to chug a beer to get myself the appropriate size bottle. At supper I made the children sing to me or they wouldn't get cake!!! The question is . . . why is this one of my most memorable birthdays??

  memorable 'cause it's kooky and enDEARing ♥

Sooz-worried about you, thinking of you, hoping you are having a better day, a better week!

Missed you all! Couldn't raise my head long enough to turn on the computer since Saturday, so far I've been up for 3 whole hours!!

RAH-CHALLE!!!! so glad yer better!! we missed you :)

I also am doing better.

SILLS - I found the BEST doctor yesterday!!!!!!!!!!! Am slightly in shock.....I have had the WORST doctors since moving back here  (except for my beloved GI) who spend no more than FIVE minutes with me for a physical, or whatever.

So - I found this guy on a specific website, and drove out-of-town to see him (not saying which website since my stalker ex-boyfriend still sometimes reads here - AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, IF YOU"RE STILL READING ALONG, FOR GOD"S SAKE, PLEASE STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )

Anywho. He spent about 40 minutes with me, and it was the most THOROUGH verbal and physical exam I've ever had.....just amazing. He's the ONLY doctor to actually HEAR the "click" of the mitral valve prolapse (no one caught the reason for my fluttering and weird heart stuff until an ultrasound was done). He was APPALLED that my current (former) doctor had not checked B12 levels, Vit. D levels, all hormones, lipids (severe heart disease on my mom's side), cholesterol, all KINDS of stuff. Had all that detailed blood work this morning, including T3 and T4, so I'm extremely pleased!!!! :) x 10

I just feel so encouraged...this doctor is PERFECT - runs pretty much in between conventional and holistic medicine.....recommends LOTS of supplements....I have to increase my fish oil!

*burp*

oh and BTW - he believes that SWINE FLU is a HOAX!!! :o Created by World Health Organization to make TONS of money. He says there ARE really wretched new strains of flu, as there are all the time, but there are no more deaths from the so-called swine. I didn't ask him about the vaccine as I don't plan on getting it......but I suspect his answer would be NO.

Sillies--I talked to Judith this morning. The movers are finishing up loading her stuff today after a long day of last minute packing and loading yesterday. She's holding it all together well between all of the good-byes and the stress of the move itself :D They will clean the house tomorrow, and the closing is scheduled for Friday--after that, they are off to California. B)

I just called her!!! I hadn't talked to her since my wretched summer of '08, I believe....she will be in a FORUMLESS ABYSS for more than TWO WEEKS!!!!!!!!! Said the move went BEYOND perfectly ;) I'm so excited for them!

All ok,...... except I am REALLY anAemic!!!!

WIH????

He questioned my diet (how dare he! )....which *I* think is pretty balanced. The doc then suggested he test ME for celiac disease ( ... had a good 'inward' chuckle at this suggestion)

I proceeded to tell him that I am already eating gluten-free so there was no point. (good call though!!)

Sooo, he's given me iron tabs to take for 2 months, and then re-test my bloods..... if it hasn't come up by then he wants to start 'investigations'

I clearly need to EAT FILET STEAK everynight!!!

FILET EVERY NIGHT, Nikkers!!!!! this is CRAZY!!!!!!

but...did he check your FERRITIN also? that is the key......and I have the same question as Pads, are you ONE HUNDRED PERCENT G F ? even away from home? methinks those pub lunches lead to cheating ;) <can't blame ya>

and WHOT in hell is this IRON CAKE Tel eats???? I WANT SOME!!!!!!!!

BTW there are going to be some Tesco stores opening here! I'm outta my mind!

In fact one's already here, downtown, called "fast and easy" or summat like that? No.....wait.......that sounds whore-ish...... But they're smaller markets...I MUST go see this!!

Meant to mention two things this am, and forgot.....Sooooozle, you've given us such fantastic news!! So wonderful - -a doctor who is listening, proactive, and really ready to get to the bottom of things. :):) How sad that we are in a society that does not recognize this as the norm, and we jump up and down in excitement when we actually find a doc like this. <_<

ANNNNND.....my girlfriend made my birthday cake yesterday. She is a phab cook/baker/kitchen navigator, and she made a sugar-free, gluten-free chocolate fudge cake with cream cheese icing. It was unbelievable. The most rich, moist cake I have ever had. With such restrictions, I long ago gave up trying to make any baked goods without gluten and sugar - - dry, heavy and gross. But she worked some magic. What a treat!

Me ferritin was slightly low...nowt like yooz peeps have had....I MUST clean up me act TOOT SWEETE!!!!!

Nik, the developments here will be just fascinating, as it sounds like you have had more gluten-trouble symptoms than I did.....all I had was borderline low iron - - in fact, my endo wasn't even classifying it as low. Quite remarkable that I was diagnosed at all, considering all the people who have obvious, classic symptoms and often go eleven years before it is found.

Mini Whore-ish Tescos  Also a band name... . . ......

.... but I get the feeling the bottle is crucial to the whole process

As is the story of my life.... . .....a bottle (um, FULL, of wine) being crucial to many daily processes. . . .. . .....

Looked this up.   Yes, forgiveness and bearing with people is people is vital.
    • cristiana
I must admit I've been on both sides.  Before my diagnosis, and in my ignorance, I thought all the special diets we see around us today were unnecessary and people were making a big fuss over nothing.  There is a shop in the small town where I live that sells organic and gluten free food and I used to see people walking in and buying things and thought they were being a bit ridiculous spending extra money on what I thought was a fad.  Yet since my diagnosis that shop has been a real lifesaver.  I guess It is hard for people to see the necessity of all this extra effort if they haven't experienced celiac disease personally, or observed the way gluten affects someone they love.  Honestly, I have wondered at times if I would have been as understanding had my husband been diagnosed with coeliac disease instead of me. He has been great.   It must be incredibly difficult if your close friends and family aren't supporting you.  I have read some awful stories from coeliacs where friends and families have not just been unsupportive, but go out of their way to continue serving up gluten.   In such extreme cases, where harm is actually being done, serious thought needs to be taken about removing oneself from harm's way.  That all said, I find that the world is now so full of people struggling with autoimmune illnesses now, allergies and intolerances, that people are definitely becoming more attuned to things.    Word is getting out there. In 2022 a long-running popular TV series in the UK, Doc Martin, ended with a final case: a patient being diagnosed with coeliac disease.  I don't know if anyone saw it but I was so heartened by that episode, that celiac disease was given centre stage for the last ever programme. The patient in question had been suffering from a horrible rash which turned out to be dermatitis herpetiformis. He also had anemia, felt faint and was plain exhausted.  It would have been good education to anyone watching who didn't know about the disease and they would have been left in no doubt about its seriousness and the need to follow a strict gluten-free diet.  I thought to myself as it ended, well, now, that's another piece in our campaign to make coeliac disease better understood!

I understand your frustration about socializing while having celiac disease. I also have allergies to nuts, dairy, all forms of gluten including oats, strawberries and MSG. I get anxiety while grocery shopping and really take my time to read all labels. I always carry a magnifying glass with me wherever I go to read labels. Many products are labelled Gluten Free but contain Oats, and apparently this is becoming more common. I almost bought some gluten free flour but read that it contained oats. A certain percentage of Celiacs have this complication. I can’t help feeling offended and excluded when others act like I am being “high maintenance”. I am becoming better at being an advocate for myself.  I have had diverticulitis 3 times and each time hospitalized-once, the attending nurse didn’t know what celiac means-she had to research...  If others around me make comments I try to enlighten them, those who don’t get it are not my friends anymore. Be very careful about cross-contamination. I was sick recently for 10 days after a meal was contaminated while I was on holiday. If servers say they have gluten free buns or bread, ask if they use a toaster specifically reserved for gluten-free, or don’t chance it. On a positive note, I didn’t find out I had Celiac Disease until I was 60. Eating a gluten free diet means no more terrible headaches, hives, rashes, intestinal bloating and irregularity, Gastro Intestinal Reflux….when I follow a strict diet and mostly always eat at home, I feel great! I also weeded out “friends” who weren’t worth being around.
