Uggggghhhhhhh... 3:15am here... Ezra's been up all night with a fever... 102.5 and I have no idea what's wrong with him, except that he feels like crap. And tomorrow (today???) is Luke's first ever school play. Not quite sure how I'm going to manage this. :(

And coming up to post 1,000 soon. <_<

OH Sarah- sorry to hear Ezra's not feeling well, is he any better this morning? I hope you do get to Luke's play.

1,000 posts....be prepared for a flood of all fluids....rain gear, boats....big events like this can get scary!

Morning Sillies-

Forgot to add this to my above post...

Tomorrow is sandal day! I am breaking out the toe nail paint and dusting off my sandals...which should be so dusty I have been walking around in the house with them on to prepare for the big event. My old cubie mate and I do this ritual...we love wearing Sandals....so tomorrow is Free the Toes Day!!!!

Thankfully it is now Thursday, Landen is feeling much better which means he should have a good time with us this weekend. We start our official being the babysitter this weekend, and he will be with us 3 nights in a row.

Morning, Sillies!

Well...... :(

Should'a watched America Gives Back last night, or the Weather Channel.....anything but that heinosity in Pittsburgh. Could very well be Ottawa gone in four..... :o

Ptaum! What happened in SJ? Quite a definitive upset....from what I'm reading, Calgary was playin' like literal flames--lightin' up the ice at times...

:( Aughhh, Sarah.

I'm hoping you're managing to get a bit of sleep right now, though I certainly remember how difficult that is during the day with two small kids. Ezra will hopefully catch up on his sleep now, and you can too--at least, that's the way it's supposed to work. <_< Is Luke in school all day yet? (I think he's your younger boy...)

Hey! Did you all know that the capital of Azerbaijan is Baku?

The capital of Burundi is Bujumbura?

The fifth largest country in the world is Brazil?

The most mountainous country is Iran, followed by Austria?

I know it all, now, for I have a husband with a spankin' new, romantically-charged WORLD ATLAS, and he was citing these pieces of information to me last night as I was trying to get to sleep. The Senators would take a ridiculous penalty or would cough up the puck, and DH would swear, leave the TV room and stand over his new reference tablet, staring, staring. I think if our season ends next week, he should be thinking about an application to Jeopardy!

Toronto (Trono) AND Vancouver should have gotten both! When was the last time Canadians ran over peaceful protestors with tanks?

Doesn't Canada deal with protesters by looking at them askance until they succumb to peer pressure and go quietly back to their houses?

Excellent! Now you can choose where he'll be taking you (sending you??) on your next vacation. Pick somewhere with a great sounding name.

:lol::lol:

I believe so. Most recently, the RCMP got a rowdy crowd of protesters under control with some fine Canadian weaponry--well-aimed snowballs fired from atop their horses (such is the crowd control in a nation without guns...). They will also revoke one's health care...this causes immediate dissipation.<_<;)

How about Christmas Island?

Svalbard?

Vanuatu?

Wallis and Futuna?

We are only allowed to burn baby burn after 6.30pm .

So tonight we are planning our small beach getaway this year. John's brother, me and John, and Jen and Landen have decided to get a condo in Wildwood for 3 days.

Sounds fab!!!! - haven't a clue where 'Wildwood' is (googling it now!) but it sounds SUPERB!!!! :D

Wildwood NJ, a beach town. It is at the end of NJ, down by Cape May. We go every year but with the high gas and stuff we were thinking of holding off this year but we might go anyway...you only live once!

I get diarrhea when I travel. Haven't done any traveling since being gluten-free though, maybe that's improved.

A long-ago (1981?) dorm roommate was from Wildwood. Wish I could remember the name of his parents' restaurant ... ..might be an unimaginative Wildwood Cafe or Diner. Hmmm

Grrrrrrr by the time I tuned in it was 2-zip, ~5min in. I didn't watch much. I've enjoyed hockey in person, but never played it enough to have the interest for much on tv. Playoff overtime I'll watch!!! And game 7 for The Cup!

Did see the final couple exciting minutes - down 3-1, a score for 3-2 and a flurry of decent chances in the last minute. Sharks fans, w/ their lofty expectations, are gonna be SO pissed if they don't advance!!

No bonfYres???

It may only be trash and leaf fires that are illegal. Iiiiiiii dunno .. ..Bonfires are common on beaches!! and who doesn't make a campfire when .. .well . ..camping. And I've seen backyard firepits around - some occasionally in use.

Maybe the Fresno area's stricter, w/ a different atmospheric inversion-layer situation. Phx has certain impromptu winter days when a simple indoor fireplace fire is illegal.

I understand her feeling happy. I got my braces off last May and it was such a great feeling looking in the mirror. I spent 5,000 for mine and insurance didn't cover a penny of it. I did the clear ones though so they didnt show up too much. I am glad it is all over though, but I am also so glad I did it. It was well worth the time and pain. well they didnt hurt too bad but you know.

Emily--my niece who's name is Emily just got her braces off, too! What a relief for both of them :D

Well guys, I went to the new doctor today....needed a new script for some meds and also wanted to go before I was sick to introduce myself and scope things out a little :P

The visit went off without a hitch--she said I didn't look old enought to have a 27 year old son! B) Won me over right there  After, I ran some errends. It's about 80 and sunny today and it was nice just driving with the windows down listening to the radio.

Thanks for asking about Ez, you guys!

Last night was HEINOUS. Called the doc this morning and they wanted me to bring him right in. Not surprised with his record. Anyway, he has strep throat AND and ear infection. Good grief.

Ok, so the antibiotic she put him on has a 10% cross reactivity with some of the other meds he's allergic to, so we have to keep a close eye on him. He's never had the scary throat-swelling reaction... it's the huge plaque-y hives that he gets. Urgh...

I have our doctor's beeper number. B)

Brian is supposed to be home any minute so I can take Lucas to the school play. (Em, he's my older one, 1st grade.)

Ok, guys... catch up with ya later. Possibly at 3 am. <_<

Sarah,

I'm sorry--I meant to send my good wishes to poor Ez...I was out most of the day. Gosh, he's really been through it lately--you all have :(

Glad you'll be able to get to the play, anyway. Enjoy and hopefully everyone gets some sleep tonight :)

oh yay, Sophie's got her braces off! :D Slippery indeed, I remember it well. So HEINOUS, my wisdom teef grew in, and they're crooked on the bottom now. My dad would not be happy......

Sarah! OMG - another infection for Ez? :( So sorry. but OMG - PLEEZ call the doctor the INSTANT any kind of wretched rash or weird sore appears......my friend's niece had a near-death reaction to an antibiotic...I won't go into detail here but.....she was not expected to live, and did.

I will be helping two to four kids read, grades K through 3, once a week. I am so excited. I don't miss teaching, but I really miss the one-on-one w/ kids. I will be doing this at Lauren's school, so get to see her more often. Yay! And - can feel slightly good about myself - not just take up air on the planet...

finishing a tape - BAH!

am TRYING to post a new av w/ Annie as my garden helper and it's not working. HARRUMPhHHFFFFFFF

It's true!!! My teeth felt sooo slippery and kind of slimy when I got my braces at 13. That was the first thing my friends who had also had braces asked me when they came off -- "Don't your teeth feel so slippery?". I got my braces off a month before grade 8 graduation pictures -- good timing.

Does she have to wear a retainer for a while? I had to chase the janitor down the hall one day during lunch hour because I realized I threw my retainer in the garbage and he had just collected it and combined it with the garbage from a few other classes. I had to search though the yucky garbage but I did find it. MUCH sanitation and cleaning of the retainer took place that night before my parents could convince me to put it back in my mouth. I had always scoffed at the warnings to be careful to not throw your retainer away after taking it out to eat. Certainly *I* would never be that careless  -- it ended up happening more than once.

For me I gave up oat products and it finally cleared. I had a whole body reaction for months. Two additional culprits for me: shared grill at a restaurant or a shared toaster.  Hope you have relief soon.

It can take between 6 months and 2 years for the dermatitis herpetiformis rash to resolve. The symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis arise from deposits of certain antibodies building up in the skin. These deposits attract immune cells leading to inflammation and blistering. It can take 10 years for the deposits to be reabsorbed although symptoms resolve long before this.

Welcome to the forum, Linda! Many on this forum can sympathize with you. It can be extremely difficult to get reliable information about gluten when it comes to meds, supplements and oral hygiene products. This is especially true since so much of this stuff is generic and comes from over seas. I will deflect with regard to your question about meds and oral products but take you in another direction. Have you tried a low iodine diet. Iodine is known to exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis and some find that a low iodine diet helps reduce the number of outbreaks. By the way, have you had your celiac antibodies retested recently? If they are elevated that might be a clue that you are getting gluten in your oral hygiene products or meds.

Hi. I’m 70 years old, and a 22 year survivor of head and neck cancer treated with chemo-radiation, which resulted in non-existent submandibular salivary glands and extreme dry mouth and altered oral mucosa. I have been using dry mouth toothpaste, Rx oral dentrifices and moisturizers for years.  I’ve recently been diagnosed with severe celiac dermatitis herpetiformis. I was being treated with oral Dapsone, but it was not effective and I developed some serious side effects. So, the medication was stopped and I was started on Doxycycline (another antibiotic) for inflammation. I’ve been using Rx Betamethasone steroid ointment with little to no effect. I have tried every oral and topical antihistamine treatment available OTC. None have touched this horrible relentless itching. That is my history.  Now to my question. Does anybody know about gluten free toothpastes and mouth moisturizers? I ask because a very common dry mouth brand stated to me that they were indeed gluten free. But as I am not getting any better with my dermatitis herpetiformis, I was wondering if I was getting glutenized some way other than diet as  I have been following a strict clean gluten free diet, but I am not seeing any improvement at all. So, I started looking up the toothpastes and moisturizer ingredients individually and nine (9) of the eleven (11) or so listed showed up as   containing gluten or that may have gluten! Am I getting glutenized orally by these products?  As an aside, I checked on my favorite lavender scented baby lotion which is supposed to be gluten free, but many of those ingredients when investigated separately, show they  do contain or may contain gluten as well. I stopped using the lotion. But I cannot forgo my dental care. I was unable to get any information from the manufacturer of my current brand of chewable multivitamins either. They told me to check with my doctor. If THEY don’t know what’s in their product, how do they think a PCP will?  In light of all this, I am confused and angry that I might keep getting contaminated with gluten through products I am using that are supposedly gluten safe. *I should also state that I have a nickel allergy since I was about 12-13 years old. And I developed a contact allergy to latex (gloves) when I was a student nurse at 19 years old.  I know and I’m sorry that this is so lengthy. I’m trying to do everything I can to combat this condition, and I’m feeling very confused, anxious and angry about not getting adequate information as I try to educate and advocate for myself. I’m hoping someone here is more knowledgeable than me of how to navigate through all of this. Can anyone offer any advice?  Thank you for your time.  Respectfully,  Linda

Welcome to the forum, @Cathijean90! I went 13 years from the first laboratory evidence of celiac disease onset before I was diagnosed. But there were symptoms of celiac disease many years before that like a lot of gas. The first laboratory evidence was a rejected Red Cross blood donation because of elevated liver enzymes. They assume you have hepatitis if your liver enzymes are elevated. But I was checked for all varieties of hepatitis and that wasn't it. Liver enzymes continued to slowly creep up for another 13 years and my PCP tested me for a lot of stuff and it was all negative. He ran out of ideas. By that time, iron stores were dropping as was albumin and total protein. Finally, I took it upon myself to schedule an appointment with a GI doc and the first thing he did was test me for celiac disease. I was positive of course. After three months of gluten free eating the liver enzymes were back in normal range. That was back in about 1992. Your story and mine are more typical than not. I think the average time to diagnosis from the onset of symptoms and initial investigation into causes for symptom is about 10 years. Things are improving as there is more general awareness in the medical community about celiac disease than there used to be years ago. The risk of small bowel lymphoma in the celiac population is 4x that of the general population. That's the bad news is.  The good news is, it's still pretty rare as a whole. Yes, absolutely! You can expect substantial healing even after all these years if you begin to observe a strict gluten free diet. Take heart! But I have one question. What exactly did the paperwork from 15 years ago say about your having celiac disease? Was it a test result? Was it an official diagnosis? Can you share the specifics please? If you have any celiac blood antibody test results could you post them, along with the reference ranges for each test? Did you have an endoscopy/biopsy to confirm the blood test results?
