Hurricane Ike is getting closer....

My son and daughter-in-law just moved to Texas. They live about 2 hours from the coast, directly in the path of Ike.

Morning all!!

Rotten hangover fron Angus' party :rolleyes:

Have recovered my newly shaven cat. They don't do the tip of the tail so he looks kinda like a cheap feather duster. He's also not nearly as fat as I thought he was. Guess I won't worry about over treating.

This cracks me up!!...he looks soo cute!!.....I've heard of cats being shaved when they are covered in matts but never 'a cut :D

..and that's about it...no bling or faux diamonds....but I imagine Californian gyms to be more 'showy'!! ;):lol:

Morning Sillies

Tis dawning a sunny morning and I hear it will be hot....not what I want now. I dont want hot humid days anymore, I would rather the 70's.

Landen just went home. John and I have lots of things to do today. We need to get to the store and we have these free Hershey Park passes but I am not sure if we will use them today or another weekend.

What is everyone else up to?

Well, we begin demolition of the existing deck today, and it will be a family affair - - all of us out there with hammers, crowbars.. . . . . perhaps ballcocks... . . . .... . gawd help us...... . .

I cannot believe I have not mentioned this gentleman to you all yet. .. . .perhaps there is a subconscious belief that I will not be fully believed :rolleyes::lol: , but truly, there is a very fit black guy who frequented my gym some time ago, and I haven't seen him in a while.

He would enter the weight and cardio machine area in tribal garb - - shorts that were made of a straw-like material (stringy wool, perhaps?), shreds of animal-pattern fabric around his chest and arms (like it had just been torn from a leopard carcass), and sometimes bizarre warpaint slashed across his cheeks. The mandatory athletic shoes were always in place, so I suppose he met the dress code and was never asked to change or leave. Astonishing, really......

One Saturday morning I asked him if he was using the weights that were on the floor near his bench. His response (and I am paraphrasing) was summat like this:

"Oh nabbu conii wakku akorro bo bo"....... ..... .

So, I did not get those weights.

What happened to that man?

Perhaps it was just my dad. :huh::lol:

Off to rip up decking!!

I also need to take a clandestine shot of that Tribal Gym Man, to offer proof of his existence. I haven't seen him in a while. . . .... . ...gad, someone must have gotten a pic of him with their phone. Incredible conversation piece, a photograph like that.. .. . .

He also spoke quietly to himself (hell, I guess so...... . ...who in hell else would engage in conversation wif 'im?) and sweated PROFUSELY when he lifted even rudimentary weights.

Must track down pic of him........

He was the inspiration for our Hallowe'en costumes for a big party we went to a couple of years ago. Now that I am sure I have a pic of. Will dig it up.. . . . . . .... :D

I had the same problem. I kinda think he's scamming us too. But I don't wanna be mean in case it's actually a kid who's utterly lost.

It's a tough call.... . ......but I would always play it carefully, and refrain from interjecting something that would suggest he's anything but a troubled kid, just in case that is indeed what he is....... . . . ...

Got a call from my son a couple of hours ago. They are in the middle of the hurricane. The eye was supposed to pass about 20 miles from them. Their town was not evacuated....probably because it is so far inland. I think it"s only a category 1 at this point.They lost power. One tree came down onto their patio. A tree in the vacant lot next to his house came down on the power lines and started a fire, but the rain put it out before the fire department got there.

But one observation - aren't people with asberger's generally quite brilliant? Or is that an ignorant stereoptype?

They can be just like the general population, and can be very bright, but often have limited interests. So I can see how someone with Aspergers might not tune in to things in which they don't deem important. This guy may not have paid any attention to things related to food....until now. The Asperger kids I have met had learning disabilities, but that is just the nature of my job. Of course the ones I meet are going to have problems. I'm sure there were many I didn't know about who were not in special ed. They also can be quite brilliant in certain areas. One girl I knew wrote awesome poetry.

Hubby and I went garage-saleing today........I found a brand new leather jacket (needed one for motorcycle riding :P )......VERY soft leather subtly embossed with a small flower print......sales tag was from Wilson's leather...$300.....I paid $50.......He had several leather jackets.......Hubby says he's not asking where he got them :ph34r: ...........but boy do I look GOOD in that jacket!! :D

Glad you heard from your son and that all is ok so far.

I have family in Houston and they hunkered down at home. They lost power as well as of midnight last night, and a tree snapped in the back yeard. Haven't heard an update this morning however so I am crossing my fingers there wasn't too much damage to the house.

I have had the hardest time with that, especially since my last name ends in an "s".

possessive for Angus would be Angus's. If it were a plural proper noun, such as The Smiths, the possessive would be Smiths'.......as in The Smiths' house is for sale. More than one person with the same name endng in s would add es.....as in There were two Anguses at the party.

Okay, okay....... . . the backyard doesn't look too demolished as yet - - we got all the railing off the old deck, but none of the floor boards....and we've been doing the most vile of the work: digging four HUGE, DEEP holes in which to sink the four new supports (the new deck is going to be a little bigger than this one). True heinosity. At least it is only 20 C today. . .. any hotter, and I'd be outta there.

You should see my hands. They aren't attractive to begin with, but now they are right ugly. Horrid, chipped-down nails, bigger callouses than before.......gads. :blink:

So, I shall wait to post a pic until things look REALLy demo'ed..........

BUT........I do not have to wait to post my pic of our Hallowe'en get-ups, inspired by the tribal Weightlifter. Found one. I shall scan it post haste. If you take off Will's headdress and the beading, he looks quite a lot like this bizarre gym member........ :lol:

Yes he is very happy, thanks! He's a good kid. I enjoy having him. I wont have him tonight but I have him tomorrow night, I will pick him up on my way home from the nieghbors. Sometimes it feels like child custody, he comes on the weekends and we drop him off with his mother at work in the mornings, and we sometimes have him during the week. He is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work and it has prepared us alot for when it is our turn!

Glad to hear the update on the family members in TX...Ike caused a lot of stuff down there.

Latest news from Nacogdoches, TX....

Son and DIL are pretty much done with IKE. One more tree down.....missed the front of the house by a couple of feet. Residents are requested to stay home and not venture out, as most roads are impassable. Trees and power lines down everywhere. All is well.......they survived their first hurricane :P

      Thanks again. My mom was diagnosed over 50 years ago with celiac so grew up watching her deal with the challenges of food. I have been tested a few times prior due to this but these results have me a bit stunned. I have a liver disease that has advanced rapidly with no symptoms and an allergy that could be a contributing factor that had no symptoms. I guess...

I also had sufficient total IgA so if I'm reading the Mayo clinic thing correctly, I didn't really need the anti-deaminated gliadin marker? So, if I am reading the information correctly do I conclude that as all the other markers including...

      Thank you for the response and article. I was placed on the Mediterranean diet and been on that now for about 3 weeks. While not gluten free I am eating very little bread or anything with gluten ie a slice of whole wheat bread every couple days so assume that would cause issues now with a biopsy. With the condition my liver is in I am unsure moving back...

You only had two celiac disease diagnostic tests run out of six that could have been ordered if your doctor had opted for a complete celiac panel.       Thanks again. My mom was diagnosed over 50 years ago with celiac so grew up watching her deal with the challenges of food. I have been tested a few times prior due to this but these results have me a bit stunned. I have a liver disease that has advanced rapidly with no symptoms and an allergy that could be a contributing factor that had no symptoms. I guess I’ll call it lucky my Dr ordered a rescreen of a liver ultrasound from 5 years ago that triggered this or I would likely have tripped into cirrhosis. It’s all pretty jarring.

So, if I am reading the information correctly do I conclude that as all the other markers including tTg IgA and DGP IgG and tTg IgG and EMA IgA are all negative, then the positive result for the immune response to gliadin, on it's own, is more likely to suggest some other problem in the gut rather than Coeliac disease? Until I have a view from the medics (NHS UK) then I think I will concentrate on trying to lower chronic inflammation and mend leaky gut, using L glutamine and maybe collagen powder. Thank you for your help so far.  I will get back in touch once I have a response, which sadly can take quite a long time.   Kindest Heather Hill

      To put this in perspective, most recent pretest "gluten challenge" guidelines for those having already been eating reduced gluten or gluten free for a significant time period is the daily consumption of 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks leading up to the day of testing (antibody or biopsy). And I would certainly give it more than two weeks to ensure a valid test experience. Short answer: If it were me, yes, I would assume I have celiac disease and launch full bore into gluten-free eating. I think the tTG-IGA is reliable enough and your score is solid enough to make that a reasonable conclusion. Here is an article to help you get off to a good start. It's easy to achieve a reduced gluten free state but much more difficult to achieve consistency in truly gluten-free eating. Gluten is hidden in so many ways and found in so many food products where you would never expect to find it. For example, soy sauce and canned tomato soup (most canned soups, actually), pills, medications, health supplements. It can be disguised in terminology. And then there is the whole issue of cross contamination where foods that are naturally gluten free become contaminated with gluten incidentally in agricultural activities and manufacturing processes: Eating out at restaurants is a mine field for those with celiac disease because you don't know how food is handled back in the kitchen. Gluten free noodles boiled in the same water that was used for wheat noodles, eggs cooked on the same griddle that French toast was, etc.

      Welcome to the forum, @MI-Hoosier! You are operating on a misconception about your "mixed" test results. It is perfectly normal to not test positive for all possible celiac disease diagnostic tests. That is why there is more than one test option. It is the same way with other diagnostic testing procedures for many or most other diseases. Generally, when diagnosing a condition, a number of different tests are run and a diagnosis is arrived at by looking at the total body of evidence. The tTG-IGA test is the centerpiece of celiac disease blood antibody testing and the one most commonly ordered by doctors. You were strongly positive for that test. It was not an unequivocal result, IMO.  Having said that, it is standard procedure to confirm a positive celiac disease blood antibody test result with an endoscopy/biopsy which is still considered the gold standard of celiac disease diagnosis. Had your tTG-IGA been 150 or greater, your doctor many have opted out of the endoscopy/biopsy. The absence of GI distress in the celiac disease population is very common. We call them "silent celiacs". That can change as damage to the lining of the small bowel worsens. Elevated liver enzymes/liver stress is very common in the celiac population. About 18% of celiacs experience it. I was one of them. Persistently elevated liver enzymes over a period of years in the absence of other typical causes such as hepatitis and alcohol abuse was what eventually led to my celiac disease diagnosis. But it took thirteen years to get that figured out. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes were back into normal range. Thank goodness, there is more awareness these days about the many long fingers of celiac disease that are not found in the classic category of GI distress. Today, there have been over 200 symptoms/medical conditions identified as connected to celiac disease. It is critical that you not begin a gluten free diet until your endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel is over. Doing so before that procedure will invalidate it because it will allow healing of the small bowel lining to begin. Here is a link to an article covering celiac disease blood antibody testing:
