thanks. i am very excited to eat them now

I eat them with no problem

Two years ago Cheetos did have wheat in their ingredients. They have since changed the formula and I now eat them with no problem.

Old lists may say they are not safe and if the ingredients say wheat avoid. I can't imagine that old packages are still around but it is possible.

angel-jd1 Community Regular

I've been gluten free for about 4 years now. They have been safe the whole time I have been gluten-free.

Cheetos are not gluten free. They just are made with no gluten ingredients. The natural cheetos are completely gluten free. I react to Crunchy Cheetos, but I don't to natural Cheetos

What makes you think that Cheeetos are not gluten free? If they do not have gluten ingredients, that would make them gluten free. :D

And please bear in mind, that you have responded to a thread that is over six years old. Product information changes.

I know that this is old, but since it was brought up here I'll post here. I was intrigued by the idea that Cheetos are all made without gluten but only certain ones are gluten free. I jumped over to their website and saw this confirmed. In the listing, all are listed as "made without gluten ingredients" but only the naturals ones are "gluten free." This led me to email the company and I surprisingly got a quick response, which is what I expected. Any labeled as gluten free are tested, the others are not and share equipment. This is the email I got back:

Hi Heidi,

Thank you for contacting us about gluten free snacks.

Many of our snacks have always been made with gluten free ingredients and we appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns.

The snacks on our gluten free list have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that there has been no cross contamination and contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. This is the standard set by the FDA

This is the standard set by the FDA’s 2007 Proposed Rule For Gluten-Free Labeling. Certain ingredients are also tested prior to being delivered to our plants.

Gluten is treated as an allergen in our manufacturing facilities. It may be helpful to know that we run non-seasoned chips first. The lines are thoroughly cleaned between seasoned runs that contain allergens and gluten, to prevent cross contamination. A complete sanitation is done before the non-seasoned chips are run again.

The snacks that do not contain gluten ingredients, do not have wheat rye, barley or oats in their formula, however, they have not been tested to ensure they contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten.

You'll find our regularly updated lists in the "Your Health" section of www.fritolay.com, under "For Special Dietary Needs."

Frito-Lay will continue to provide the information you need to make snacking both safe and enjoyable.

Happy snacking!

Best regards,

Belinda

Hopefully this clears up any confusion about it. Personally, since I stay away from shared equipment I guess I'm stuck with the naturals. We'll see though, I haven't tried any yet so I may be fine with the regular ones. I'm just a little too skeptical to try yet.

Thank you for your response and the update. :D

According to their website, regular crunchy Cheetos are now considered gluten-free to 20 ppm.

Foods are only considered gluten-free, that is, safe for people with actual celiac disease as opposed to someone who may only have gluten sensitivity, when they are certified and tested to be below 20 ppm. For some celiacs, even 20 ppm is too much. So that is what this person was saying. If foods are processed on shared equipment with wheat ingredients, they are not gluten-free. Hope this clears things up for you.

All of that being said, I did go to the Frito-Lay website today, and as of Nov. 2, 2015, the regular crunchy Cheetos are now considered to be actually gluten-free, below 20 ppm, as opposed to simply not being made with gluten ingredients.

By law, the food cannot be labeled "gluten free" unless it has been tested to below 20ppm. That doesn't mean anything not so labeled is unsafe; it just means it has not been tested. Apples are not labeled gluten-free, but they are. See?

Do note this topic started 9 years ago and some of the posts you guys are replying to are three years old.  The crunchy cheetos which I occasionally binge eat are now part of the Frito Lay gluten-free list, so enjoy your cheesy snack! :)

For anyone reading this, I would not trust the list provided by the commenter. I was reading the ingredients on Ms. Vickie's mesquite bbq chips and it says "barley malt" right in the ingredients. That's gluten, folks. This is not the only company that seems confused as to what gluten is. I also saw that Airheads say both "gluten free" AND "manufactured in a facility that processes wheat flour..." so it's getting very confusing. I saw the same thing on fruit snacks.

That list, and this thread, are both from 2006. It was probably accurate back then, but due to ever changing ingredients in processed foods, it's always best to stick with lists from the current year/month.

Those are great points and some follow up thoughts and ideas. I think you're both stating the same thing in two different ways, but I appreciate the "accuracy" of what you're getting to.   1. Are you both stating that the "too salty of a taste" could be triggered by a histamine reaction, and the flavor is coming from the electrolytes? If that is the case, wouldn't the individuals mouth always be salty during a "Glutening" situation, or are we saying that the person could get "use to the flavor" until introducing food or beverage and that could be enough to "stir the pot" and notice the salty flavor? 2. To push back on "#1": If that were true anyone with issues of histamine releasing foods/treatments would experience the same thing. Also, I did not experience a situation where most beverages were "too salty". Thoughts?

The only vegetable sources of B12 are some fermented bean products using a certain microbiotic culture. It is next to impossible to get adequate B12 from vegetable sources without supplementation. Same with D3. Some mushrooms can make D3 when exposed to UV light. Are you vegetarian or vegan? Do you do dairy and eggs or no animal products at all? Low B12 and D3 could definitely cause or contribute to many of the symptoms you have been experiencing but would not cause celiac disease. It is more likely the other way around, especially if you are a vegetarian eating no animal products. Many of your symptoms seem neurological in nature. It is well known that the B vitamin complex is vital to neurological health but so is D3. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9820561/

Russ, can you link an article supporting your assertion that small amounts of gliadin are detectable in human breast milk? Not doubting you but it would be nice to have the whole text for reference.

Got it. Thanks Scott. I'll set up an appointment with a GI after the holidays and get all the celiac disease screening done. Thanks to this amazing forum and to all who have answered my question, I now know what my next steps are.
