Lundberg's Rice Express

I recently bought a Lundberg's Rice Express (Classic Beef) because right on the front it says "Gluten Free." Fortunately before I ate any I read the ingredient label. One of the ingredients is Malt Extract. I have e-mailed Lundberg Family Farms and asked them to remove their "gluten free" label for the sake of Celiacs.

not all malt is made from barley. it's *definitely* worth checking, but I thought they used rice malt, for some reason.

I think that I have been glutened by that company. I don't trust them.

Oh dear---I thought they were trustworthy. Would you still eat their plain rice? Or would you be concerned about cross contamination even for that?

Lundberg specializes in rice. I don't think they even grow wheat. I eat their rice flour all the time and don't even worry about CC. I'm not saying that the malt is safe in the "rice express", but their plain rice shouldn't be a worry.

Several of their Rice Express flavors DO CONTAIN GLUTEN and are not labeled gluten-free... I also was glutened from the beef one which IS labeled gluten-free... The rest of their products are mainly gluten-free and I believe the Rice Express flavors are the only ones that do contain gluten, although WHY? I have no idea.

I eat the Lundberg plain rices - never any problems. I never buy anything "pre-seasoned" or whatever that's called. Stuff all flavored up in advance is asking for trouble IMHO. I always wonder what they really mean when the ingredients say "Spices", with absolutely no details. It doesn't take much brain power to add a few of my own spices and whatnot. If you have a favorite blend of spices you can premix them and keep a shaker of it handy.

Not true. According to their website, the only Rice Express flavor that contains gluten is Sesame Teriyaki.

according to the individual at the company that I spoke with after my glutening incident I was told that the Rice Express flavors are mfd. on shared lines and there may have been a risk of cc... overall they are a very good company, but in this case I know it was gluten that got me.

I have also eaten their plain rice...I love their wild rice mix whatever it's called (it's not seasoned). I also, do not usually buy pre-seasoned stuff, but saw this on the grocery shelf and thought it would be good for one of those hurry up, barely have time to eat, nights. I have not heard from Lundberg Farms in response to my e-mail. (See below) If indeed they use Rice malt or even corn malt, I would have expected some response already. I don't know. I don't want to judge them inaccurately or misguide anyone reading this thread. I just say "Heads up, everyone, regarding Rice Express"

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease last December after going into severe malabsorption. Strict adherence to a gluten free diet has made all the difference in my health.

Recently I purchased a bag of Lundberg Rice Express because on the front it states "Gluten Free." After sticking it in the microwave, but before eating it (thankfully) I checked the ingredients. Malt Extract is one of the ingredients. Malt is derived from Barley and is to be avoided by those with Celiac.

Please change your labeling. Even minute traces of gluten can be extremely harmful to a Celiac.

Thank you for your consideration. For Celiac Disease patients this is an extremely serious concern.

      Welcome to the forum, @lsky! In Canada I believe your healthcare system is totally socialized so I doubt if you have the option of making direct appointments with specialists. In the U.S. it is becoming more and more that way as most people here now are covered by some government managed healthcare network and almost all providers and specialists are part of those networks. Here and there you will find independent providers that take private pay only but it is the exception. Both in Canada and in the U.S. I believe there is a concerted effort to always keep the PCP in the loop.

      I have had celiac disease since i was 7 and i've recently had worsening symptoms, I live in canada and the doctors right now are horrible so my general doctor never puts in my referrals or she does it wrong and i have to wait months-years for an answer. I was wondering I already have a Gastroenterologist, could i just contact him and ask to book an upcoming appointment? i'm not sure if it's different in canada or not.

      Welcome to the forum @Juliana82! Bleeding where? Thanks for the articles on seronegative celiac disease. As I recall, one of our moderators is seronegative and has been faithful to draw our attention to this phenomenon at different times. The heterozygous factor seronegative celiac disease is an important factoid I believe.

      With such a weak positive, his got may or may not be cleared in three months. My daughter when diagnosed at the age of seven had a TTG score of 388. It was 18 months on a gluten-free diet before her levels returned to normal. it seems to me that when you started something that allows your son to gain weight, as he clearly needs to do, you may want to keep doing it.  Sometimes you just need to figure out the science of it as you go along. Have you been tested?  That’s how I found out I had celiac disease, was after my daughter was diagnosed, and the recommendation given to me was that all of her first-degree relations should be tested as well. I came back with a weak positive when I was on a largely, though not entirely, gluten-free diet (cooking for my newly diagnosed child). good luck with everything.
