Strange Fingernails.

Rusla

Rusla Enthusiast

In the last few years the nail on my baby finger left hand would start to curl under when it gets slightly long, like over the tip of the finger. Now, it is not just the baby finger, but the middle finger and the one next to the baby finger that are doing it on the left hand. Yet, the right hand is alright.

Now I am just trying to figure out if anyone else has this, or if I am just that much stranger than everyone else. The only other person who has this and it is just the baby finger of that hand is my sister.

I am wondering if there is any significance to this nail curling thing.

The condition of finger and toe nails is very much related to health and diet!

There is a list of nail problems and possible related health issues here: Open Original Shared Link

According to the arctilce, nails which curve under can be due heart, liver, or lung / respiratory problems.

Whoa! I've totally got that! And it's new, just the last year or so. On my left middle finger, and starting on my left index...I thought maybe it was some kind of nail fungus, or something, I was getting set to buy something for it :)

Thanks for the link, Michelle. I've always been into health and fitness ... it's sad what this disease being undiagnosed can do to us ... this is what my nail problem is "Vertical ridges on nails-may indicate poor general health, poor nutrient absorption, and the ridges may also indicate a kidney disorder."

That's me too. I've had verticle ridges forever, and have always had very soft nails.

Yes, me too, I've had vertical ridges as long as I can remember. However, my nails are very strong and grow as long as I will let them. Other than the ridges, they're in great shape. I have some horizontal 'bumps' on my thumb nails though.

Yep, I have lots of vertical ridges on my fingernails...with some of the white "clouds". They are brittle and chip and flake very easy. I can only see the moons on my thumbs and the pointer (index??) finder of my left hand.

My toenails have both vertical and horizontal ridges.

I've never had moons on any of my nails, and they chip and flake easily too. Interesting to read that lack of moons can indicate hyperthyroidism...not surprising given the thyroid problems in my family...but my tests are still coming back normal. I'd better keep eye on that!

I've never had a doctor look at my nail condition though...you'd think that it would be something they would definitely check when investigating health issues!

Hmmm, I don't have moons except for my thumbs and my middle fingers. I have low thyroid.

My hubby has 'club ' fingernails and toenails. They curve right over.

I know this usually associated with heart/lung probs but he has neither

They definitely got worse as he got more ill (before he finally got dx with celiac disease)

I did have moons, white clouds, and ridges on my fingernails--until I went gluten-free. Must be a nutritional deficiency thing.

Noticed your signature. What do you take for Hashis & PA ?

I was on synthroid for the Hashis and for PA I take sublingual B-12, when I am a good girl. I usually forget because I am bad at meds. I was on the shots but did not want needles the rest of my life.

I, like you, have the huge ridges and moons only seen on the same two fingers.

nails can indicate so many things about our health. i have the ridges also and i do not have celiac. i also have a fingernail that curves over the end of my nail. i havae atopic dermatitis and when it is really bad on my fingers it can affect how the nails on those fingers grow----sometimes they get all bumpy looking. my son gets one that gets almost deformed from dermatitis.

I found this and it mentions low B-12 and Celiac.

I've always suspected I had a thyroid problem, but could never get any doctor to run any of the tests other than TSH which always comes back normal. I have several of the "classic" symptoms (which can really apply to other things too though). I'm seeing a new group of doctors who suspect adrenal fatigue and I know they're sometimes linked. I bet they'd check for me. My last blood test was in February as part of my annual exam...iron came back normal then, but I'm even MORE fatigued than I was then, so maybe they should recheck that too.

Rusla Enthusiast

What doctors should do and what they do, do are two different things.

I cut the nails last night on these hands, even with my finger tip. This morning the little nail that is left is alreayd curling down. For awhile my ridges were gone but now they are back, and they are huge.

As for fatigue I am very fatigued lately. I am a person who is used to being up at 0330 and now this morning I was in bed till 1100. I am so tired and exhausted. I think they need to put me back on the synthroid.

georgie Enthusiast

Rusla, Lots of people don't do well on Synthroid and need natural Armour. Try www.stopthethyroidmadness.com for info re that. I take Armour myself and its absolutely magic. But you do need a Dr that understands how to dose it.

Re your B12. You may need another blood test to determine levels. I found the sublinguals only work a little and still need the jabs as well. Do you understand that you can get neuro damage if you neglect your B12. Do you get pins and needles in hands and feet ?

I know its not fun to take meds but being sick is worse. You do what you have to do.

TSH is a useless test.

Georgie, everything you say makes sense to me except for this--I was diagnosed via symptoms, and tests, including the TSH, and we found the right dosage via the TSH--and I felt so MUCH better for 15 years, how could it be useless?

Is it possible that there's a large subset, maybe of celiacs, or maybe we all have something else in common as yet undiscovered, who don't do well on synthroid and need armour and the additional tests?

I think the problem is, there are enough people who DO do well on synthroid to fool the doctors into thinking it works for everybody--and obviously, it doesn't.

Fiddle-Faddle - You are one of the lucky ones. TSH can vary so much from day to day , month to month that very often a dx is missed 'cos of that. Also you can have secondary Hypo where the TSH doesn't move at all. The test 'can' work ...but it also very often doesn't. The test throws too many false negatives. Also the lab ranges are set too high, or are being changed but your lab or Dr may not be aware of the new range. And you can have an Autoimmune Thyroid with Antibodies and still show a normal TSH. Once you have got an autoimmune disease you can get others... Celiac is autoimmune .. so autoimmune Thyroid can happen for us Celiacs. So you need to be tested for Thyroid Antibodies as well as TSH and the FreeT4, Free T3.

Synthroid 'can' work for some folks. It can work , or work for a while and then fail too. Lots use it and get 80% better. Lots use it and get 80% worse! Its important to be aware that there is another choice re medications for Thyroid, and that if your Thyroid SYMPTOMS do not go away - that you may need the alternative med. And be aware that health issues like Osteoporous, cholesterol, sinus infections, hypoglycemia/pre diabetes, high blood pressure etc etc may also be low Thyroid symptoms. So you may be on Synthroid and think you are doing OK but - perhaps you are not ....

Spooning appears to be concave, like a spoon. I couldn't find a picture though. Clubbing looks like they start to thinken or curve under about mid-nail: Open Original Shared Link.

endomys is, aka, "EMA" and is a celiac disease antibody test. It was negative. gliaiga is, aka, IGP-IGA, is also a celiac disease antibody test. It was negative. TRANSGLUA is, aka, TTG-IGA, another celiac disease antibody test. It was in normal range. tranigg is, aka, TTG-IGG, still another celiac disease antibody test. It was high, or above normal range. immaqnt is, I believe, what is also known as "total IGA" and at 160, looks to be in normal range since it wasn't flagged otherwise. This is a test for IGA deficiency. If someone is IGA deficient then all other IGA test scores cannot be trusted as being accurate. You are not IGA deficient. Here is a primer explaining the various tests that can be used to diagnose celiac disease: Celiac disease blood antibody testing is not valid when someone has been gluten free or eating low gluten for a significant period of time. The IGA tests are more specific for celiac disease than are the IGG tests but your slightly high TTG-IGG test score could reflect that you have celiac disease and have had low level exposure to gluten over time or a recent exposure. You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

I'm 70, had gut issues my whole life.  15 years ago my grandchild was diagnosed with celiac.  Since I had a constant either constipation or diarrhea and what the doctors thought was fibromyalgia and other issues I decided to see what happens if I quit gluten.  I got a lot better.  BTW, 30 years ago I had head & neck cancer, the radiation destroyed my thyroid.  I suffer from chronic fatigue and have to take synthroid. A few months ago, I bought a bottle of Ice water, I was thirsty and all they had at the motel was this.  It said sugar free and had a bunch of vitamins.  I couldn't read the fine print so I thought it's safe, so I bought several bottles (it had sucralose and maltodextrin in it).  I thought one per day would be ok and it absolutely was delicious.  In the meantime, my wife found some links and bratwurst for breakfast, we didn't know it had wheat in it and we picked up a half gallon of her favorite ice cream and unknown to us they had changed the formula and added wheat.  I had several meals and several bottles before I realized something was wrong.  Did all the sugar add to the issue?   In a day, I wasn't feeling well, my joints started swelling.  In a couple days, I thought sure I had gout in both hands.  In three days, I needed help to stand up or sit down, the pain was extreme.  I went to the emergency room.  They took blood and gave me cholchistine to alleviate the gout, it did nothing.  I didn't get a report on the test.  The next week the doctor ordered more blood tests and it's all acronyms but a couple items on celiac were listed as high.  The nurse I asked about the report had no clue and the RA was negative.  This has been ongoing for over a month and only now am I able to use my hands, but it's painful. Under the Celiac labs headline it says:  endomys-Negat gliaiga-  5 gliaigg-  1 TRANGLUA -3 tranigg-  8  (high) immaqnt-  160 Rheumatoid factor <12 Thyroid stimulating hormone: 2.81 Does anyone know what this means?

I had been glutened from somewhere since I pretty much make all my food from scratch. I had to have an endoscopy which should gluten damage, had blood work which also indicated high gluten. 4 years ago when I had these tests my gluten levels were all in good alignment. It comes down to my levothyroxin accord brand that must have gluten in it. I switched to synthroid 3 weeks ago and have been doing much better and am able to sleep at night again.

That somes it up. It is worth mentioning GliadinX does not reduce symptoms for me at all. I also react to banana, avacado, cabbage, Oatmeal, and pecans among other things. If anyone else out there is like me, I had to eliminate gluten and all processed food before I could start to heal. I wish I had know this a long time ago. Thanks for the acknowledgement.

Thanks for sharing this detailed explanation. It’s really helpful to understand the differences between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. I had no idea that gluten withdrawal could feel similar to addiction, and it’s great to have that context when considering how it affects people. It’s also good to know how important it is to continue eating gluten for accurate testing. I’ll keep all of this in mind!
