Apple Cider Vineger

Lately Ive been dealing with chronic indigestion in the form of nausea and the feeling that the food just sits in my stomach and doesnt digest. Out of curiousity I thought that maybe I wasnt producing enough gastic acid so I took a teaspoon of apple cider viniger with my meals and it helped!

I had read and heard about the medicinal properties of apple cider vineger. I found lots of uses for it in that it helps digestion, cleanses, and I even heard it helps with insomnia.

So in an attempt to get more relief, I added more to my diet and I noticed some strange side effects like major chills, feeling slightly intoxicated, and feel aggitated.

Has anyone heard of or tried apple cider vinegar for medicinal benefit? I do believe there is something to this.

My 8 year old takes in in pill form every day and it seems to get rid of her heartburn. She is not gluten-intolerant. Now, the only thing she can't eat is tomatoes.

My husband has been drinking it for years in his water and never gets sick when he does. He's sick right now ... I'll have to remind him.

I was taking this for a week or so for reflux that wasn't being helped by anything else. At first it seemed to help for days and then all the sudden it seemed to not help at all. Possibly making things worse. SO I quit doing it. It is NASTY to drink and I was willing if it was working, but it isn't working. I was having nausea too and the same feeling that my food just seems to sit in my stomach.

I just quit eating dairy today and I am already vegetarian and of course gluten free. I am trying not to eat any processed high fat foods either. I don't know what to eat, but I actually feel better tonight. STarving, but I feel better. I don't know what to tell you, but I did start trying Prilosec again. It may be helping a bit, but it wan't helping completely for sure.

I was having horrible reflux and nothing was helping so I tried some vinegar. I was shocked - my heartburn was gone in minutes. I was on double doses of aciphex, protonix, gaviscon and nothing helped but the vinegar. I hated drinking it because it tastes gross so I got some pills. They are just apple cider vinegar pills from NOW. They help the same although I do have to take more than they say on the bottle - the health food store said that was fine.

You might want to try digestive enzymes. They help you digest your food. I try to take them with ever meal and I only have heartburn issues now when I'm glutened. When I am glutened the heartburn lasts for a few weeks, but the vinegar does help.

I am wondering if my reflux is from being gluttened. I am pretty sure it is. It started with that. I got gluttened from Taco Bell like 6 weeks ago and I got gluttened at home a few times too. All of course by accident. Oh and once from PF Chang's when they messed my order up. I am hoping it will get better soon.

Yesterday I quit eating for the day basically. Had nothing but cooked veges and fruits. Very boring. I saw an Olive Garden commercial last night and almost wanted to cry! I thought, that was the life when I could eat that food and now I am eating rice cakes, fruits and veges! It is just pitiful!

I have been gluten free for like 18 months now. I miss my old life.

My husband drinks apple cider vinegar every day. At first he said it was gross, but now it doesn't bother him at all. I've never heard of it helping for heartburn, I think I'll have to try it when I get heartburn. Yay! Thank ya'll for posting!

A tsp. of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, with added Stevia to cut the tartness, before meals was a lifesaver for me. I also drank it whenever my stomach hurt from acid reflux/heartburn. (but, I happen to really like the taste of vinegar so it was no hardship)

After a couple months on the gluten-free diet, though, I've had little need for it anymore. I haven't had heartburn since.

Just a side note about digestive enzymes. I could never take them because they would cause either my stomach to hurt or burning with D a day later. When I started getting serious about eliminating corn I noticed that they had corn derivatives in them. I find that now I can take the enzymes as long as there is no corn (or gluten) in them. Just wanted to add this in case someone else has problems with enzymes.

Hey Monica, hang in there. I know that since Ive been gluten free my body has been going through many changes, like not being able to eat as much as I used to and being soooooooo sensitive to food in general. But I believe this is the bodys way of healing itself from many years intestinal distress that was under our radar. Now that our immune systems is no longer under attack the body just needs to catch up and bring us back to homeostasis.

Just think every time you eat those seemingly boring fruits and veggies, your contributing to the healing process all over again. Sooner or later. You will see how much better you feel! :)

THanks for the encouragement. Yesterday evening wasn't so good. I ate something bad I suppose. Today I wasn't going to eat very much, but have eaten some. Today I feel very good, so that is good. I know several things I probably gluttened myself with and I think I will try removing all soy. I hate to do that, because I am vegetarian, but I don't think it agrees with me and may be contributing to heartburn.

I read somewhere recently it can take 2 years to recover for an adult. I think everytime I am gluttened my stomach just doesn't work for days.

If you are getting glutened all the time from eating out, I would quit eating out for a while. Taco Bell - I can't imagine eating anything there. If you stick to basics - fruits, veggies, plain rice, hopefully you won't get sick and will be on your way to feeling better.

I miss my old life too. I'm pregnant now and I was literally crying in the middle of the night because I wanted Papa John's pizza. It is hard but at least I'm feeling better.

I use the UNPASTERIZED apple cider vinegar. Not for reflux but for killing yeast. Just a drop in water tastes similar to lemon. Also I use it with olive oil for dressing for salads. You can get it in the health section at the grocer. They call it "The Mother".

      Thanks. I ve joined coeliac uk but found them particularly unhelpful - they told me to eat gluten for 6 weeks then have an  endoscopy! I m actually a retired hospital dietician so pretty well know what I m doing…… Louise
