Got Glutened!

I made a really STUPID mistake. I asked my aunt for a piece of her milky way and ate a couple bites before looking at the ingredients. I was thinking it was gluten free for a second, but then doubted it 2 seconds later. When I read the ingredients, barley malt was listed. I only had two bites, but now I'm so bloated and feel like I'm gonna throw up. Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything that I could take to reduce the bloating. I've had plans to go out with some friends tomorrow night and can't back out. I have to dress up but all I feel like wearing is a very loose bulky sweatshirt. If anyone knows of anything that would help- even a slight possibility, I will try it. Please let me know, Thanks.

Dear Anteau25,

Those symptoms are exactly what I get when I get glutened. It is so miserable! It is amazing how such a small amount of the stuff can make us so sick! :( You certainly have me deepest sympathies! One member talked about food enzymes making their symptoms practically nonexistant when they are glutened! They said Transformation Enzymes, a company in Houston, makes them. For more immediate relief, you could call a local health food store and see if they carry any kind of food enzymes. I hope this helped. I hope you recover soon.

Sincerely,

I've never tried it and I don't even know if its gluten-free but what about Gax-X. I feel the same way when I get glutened, its usually the very first symptom and it is just miserable. Oh I hope you feel better for tonight, let us know how it goes.

digestive enzymes are a very good idea...

but when I get "glutened" I rely on Pepto Bismol Chewables...

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have papaya enzymes but don't know it they're gluten free. They are the only thing that stopped me from vomiting all the time before I was diagnosed. I'm gonna go hunt some down and make sure they're gluten free. The bloating has gotten better. Well, I feel like I can breathe now. Thanks again.

Dear Anteau25,

For the gluten, you will need a supplement that has the enzyme cellulase in it. Five really useful enzymes are cellulase, amylase, lipase, protease, and lactase. I take Phenergan if I get glutened. It is the only thing that stops me from getting the dry heaves to the point I would rather let someone kill me. I tried enzymes in the past, but they did nothing for me. I am not sure why. I am glad you are doing a little better.

Sincerely,

I did the same thing recently! We can have Milky Way MIDNIGHT, but not milky way regular.

I had never heard of milky way midnight, so I guess my brain just thought milky way was on the safe list.

I OFTEN go out when I don't feel well, though. I feel distracting myself from my pain is the best way to get through it.

Good luck and have fun!

This happens to me too often and its so aggravating to think of the unnnecessary pain we have to live with because of unclear food labeling. Its really hard because I live in a country that doesn't require proper food labeling and emulsifier and stabilizers are often gluten products but its just a guessing game. This time I got sick but it was my fault for not reading properly... Anyway I drank a liter of water with 2 teaspoons of epsom salts dissolved in it becuase it actually speeds up elimination. One thing I read which is also supposed to help is baking soda. For food intolerances that is, which really isnt the same thing, but I did that too and well I guess I stopped feeling nauseous but still gummed up the works.

My thoughts are just to get it out of there as fast as possible!

Anyone found that after they get glutened they can't eat sugar of really refined foods without feeling terrible. Also its like 5 times more likely that i get sick after eating gluten...:(

My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with Celiac 2 weeks ago. We've been on gluten free diet now for 2 weeks. She still experiences abdominal pain at times , and is struggling with fatigue. What is everyone's experience with how long it takes for the body to heal and stabilize after starting the gluten free diet? Thanks for any feedback!

I have stuff coming off my scalp and stuff coming out of my ears and all my nails are brittle and breaking and I’ve got stuff under my nails and it’s even in my nose and my eyebrows, and I don’t know what to do!!!   But I’m having those little bumps just like you and white stuff around them and then my hair follicles have white stuff on them and...

"Similar proteins to the gliadin found in wheat exist as secalin in rye, hordein in barley, and avenins in oats, and are collectively referred to as 'gluten'. The gluten found in all of these grains has been identified as the component capable of triggering the immune-mediated disorder, celiac disease." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28244676/   "However, it is necessary to consider that oats include many varieties, containing various amino acid sequences and showing different immunoreactivities associated with toxic prolamins. As a result, several studies have shown that the immunogenicity of oats varies depending on the cultivar consumed." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26557006/   ...
