Dh Gave Dd Goldfish!

My dh went to get dd up from her nap while I was busy doing something else. I walk into the living room and he had a bowl of goldfish that he was sharing with our dd! She has been gluten-free for a few days! I can't believe he did that! He says he thought they were gluten-free. I picked up the box and the VERY 1ST ingredient is flour!

I hope one day he gets the hang of this diet! I will go crazy if he doesn't!

And just for the record, our house will soon be completely gluten-free, but it isn't yet. It is taking us a while to "convert"!! :D

Just had to share my frustrations!

If it makes you feel any less homicidal....my dh was famous for doing the same thing! lol! (Yes, I CAN laugh about it now as dd has been gluten-free for 2 years now and dh hasn't poisoned her in quite a while) I had to clean the house of all things gluten....minus his beer. That pretty much made the diet a no-brainer from that point on. lol! But Lord help us on the days he has to pick up food at the grocery store..

How frustrating! lol my dh sometimes thinks he's being very helpful by bringing home taco bell...oh yeah, i forgot you can't eat this....

I had an annoying experience today at the movie theater. Went to see the new bond movie w/ dh, and was sitting next to this woman who downed 2 hot dogs in about 5 minutes, then went through a bag of popcorn and 2 drinks! first of all, it was kinda gross, and it made me hungry. Second of all, it's been so long since i ate a hot dog, and it smelled so good!!! third of all, she kept touching my arm, cuz our elbows were bumping, and she was apologizing. All i could think of though was the crumbs getting on me, and i didn't finish my own popcorn for fear of CC. I was so annoyed! Aaaah! Sorry, had to vent! People can be so inconsiderate sometimes :(

You know, sometimes I think about just this.

As we struggle to find foods that will keep up health, maintain a home, or a business and working shop and cook, guard celiac disease children, it can be all so consuming.

At least for me, sometimes I don't address the food needs of my no-gluten free husband. But he is really good about eating everything that I cook, and says that the meals are much better than before. Better than any restaurant that we can go to. Before dx's, I would always ask him what he would like for dinner (board with the same and asking for suggestions) and he would always say "spaghetti". Lucky for me, I never did like pasta, but I made him spaghetti and good homemade sauce. Now the poor man never gets any. I hate the gluten free pasta (as never liked the real ones) and I can't taste to check if el donte (sp).

We need to give our un-celiac spouses a pat on the back, at least mine, for support. Remind me to do that.

Celiac has to be a quick learning process, sometimes it's hard to lead the charge, and sometimes you look back and no one is following.

Oops! Celiac is a steep learning curve, and although he ought to know that goldfish contain flour, he probably just didn't think about the ingredients. I know I never used to think about what had wheat flour in before dx. It takes a while to adjust your thinking to analyze every ingredient label. Maybe you need to label all the food in the house with gluten-free or not gluten-free. Maybe you and your husband could go through your kitchen together and pull out all the gluten food. When I was first diagnosed, I went around putting those Mr. Yuck poison stickers on all the gluten food so I could remember what things I had check the ingredients of. Then I put all the gluten food on one shelf so I didn't have to deal with it. My dad still eats gluten so there was no need to throw it away - I just didn't want to dig through it looking for my stuff. And as your daughter is gluten-free for longer, you'll probably start having less and less gluten-food in the house. Good luck!

Even though this was no joke for you, you made me laugh. You were saying that your husband had a bowl of goldfish he was sharing with your daughter. And I envisioned a goldfish bowl, with life goldfish swimming in it, and didn't get it, I was confused. And when finally it dawned on me that you were talking about a bowlful of CRACKER goldfish, I had to laugh.

Sorry that your daughter has been glutened like that. I am sure you gave your hubby a piece of your mind about that one, and he won't do it again. Just make sure he understands that the cracker bears, and other animals are baked with flour, too, not just the goldfish.

Just finished my second celebrity cruise. My first was on one of their oldest ships, it was awesome! Now we have sailed on the edge class. Wow! Not only do they have so many gluten-free options but the selection is mind blowing! Any given day you will have between 5 to 7 different gluten-free cakes to try. Yes that is right, one day at the coffee shop I had to choose between 5 gluten-free cakes not including the several puddings on display. So they gave me a small piece of each. 2 were great, 2 were just good, and 1 I did not enjoy. But never have I had the tough decision of which cake to eat?  These selections are from their normal options available for all guest. In the main dining room they always surprised me with some awesome desserts.  In my opinion the best pizza was on the Millennium class and best buffet on the Edge class. Although these two ship vary in size they are both consistent and serving high quality food from the main dinning room. The edge class gives you 4 “main” dining rooms (all included). I was unsure how this would work with my gluten-free diet? It worked great! I was able to order or see the next night’s menu for each of the four dinning venues finding that very little to no modifications needed to be made due to their extensive gluten free options.  The Millennium and Edge class ships provide the best gluten-free options from any of the cruise lines I have sailed with. You will find a larger selection and options on the edge class ships, however you will not be disappointed with the smaller Millennium class. Which is still my favorite cruise ship to date.

Welcome to the forum, @ABP! We can't comment on the test numbers you give as you didn't include the range for negative. Different labs use different units and different ranges. There are no industry standards for this so we need more information. If your daughter doesn't have celiac disease she still could have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which some experts believe can be a precursor to celiac disease and is 10x more common than celiac disease. However, there is no test for it yet but it does share many of the same symptoms with celiac disease. Both require complete abstinence from gluten.  It is seldom the case during testing where all tests are positive, even for those who do have celiac disease. This is no different than when diagnosing other medical conditions and that is why it is typical to run numbers of tests that come at things from different angles when seeking to arrive at a diagnosis. It seems like you are at the point, since you have had both blood antibody testing and endoscopy/biopsy done, that you need to trial the gluten free diet. If her symptoms improve then you know all you need to know, whatever you label you want to give it. But given that apparently at least one celiac antibody blood test is positive and she has classic celiac symptoms such as slow growth, constipation and bloating, my money would be on celiac disease as opposed to NCGS.

My nine-year-old daughter has suffered with severe constipation and bloating for years as well as frequent mouth sores, and keratosis Polaris on her arms. She also has recently decreased on her growth curve her % going down gradually.  After seeing a gastroenterologist, her IgG GLIADIN (DEAMIDATED) AB (IGG) was 22.4 while her IGA was normal. Her TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE AB, IGA was 11.9.  Most recently her genetic test for celiac was positive.  After an endoscopy her tissue showed inflammation of the tissue as well as , increased intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) but there was no blunting of the change in the villi.    It seems that every result that we get one out of two things positive rather than all leading to an inconclusive diagnosis. While we do have another appointment with the doctor to go over the results. I'm curious based on this information what others think.    I would hate to have her eliminate gluten if not necessary- but also don't want to not remove if it is necessary.    Signed Confused and Concerned Mama

I guess using "GF" instead of "PL" would have been too easy! 😉

I was wrong, however, about there being no particular health concerns associated with high total IGA: https://www.inspire.com/resources/chronic-disease/understanding-high-iga-levels-causes-impacts/ So maybe the physician's "borderline" remark is relevant to that.
