Hi all you Minnesotan's. I live near the cites in Sitllwater. We have a great local Co-Op the River Market. Also I hear there is a great place in Hudson. I am also new to the board but have learned so much here. As far as eating out I have been to Chili's who has a gluten-free menue go to the site and print it out. Also Pew Wei which I love. They have a gluten-free menu that is very good too. Good luck

I am in St. Cloud. I am also new-- just 2mos. gluten-free. I am learning to cook all over again! I think there is a support group here in the Whitney Center, but I have not gone to check it out yet. We have a health food store that does gluten-free, as well as good health food sections in Coborns and Cashwise. You can find most everything here.

Hey! I grew up in Grand Rapids MN! I don't live there anymore, moved to that UP for college. I was diagnosed last June with Celiac Disease, to my dismay. It's nice to talk to some others with the same problem!

Just sayin' hi. I'm in Coon Rapids for now; hoping to move down toward Columbia Hts. or the Camden area in Mpls, but haven't been able to sell the house.

I'm in no mood to cook tonight, but everywhere I'd like to get food from is half an hour away. Will likely end up picking up a Costco rotisserie chicken. Again.

(I think I got glutened somehow. Feeling sick, and I'm awful whiney!)

Hello all! I have not posted in a while. How is everyone? Madwoman foods has so many yummy things now! I love that place and make many visits there! Anyone been to Cabina Itallian kitchen in St. Anthony? They have great gluten-free pizza and pasta!! Nice that it is finally warming up outside!!

For those of you in the west metro, I went to Lakewinds grocery store today. There are 3 of them: Minnetonka, Anoka and Chanhassen. I went to the Minnetonka store, which is on Hwy 5, about 2 miles west of 494.

It had (by far) the biggest collection of gluten-free food I've seen. Pretty much everything you could imagine from Glutino and Kinnikinnick, as well as things from local places like Cooqi, Madwoman and French Meadow. At least 20 kinds of frozen bread, 5 or 6 kinds of pizza crust, and lots of sweets. There was a huge selection of packaged cookies, and I even found some gluten-free lebkuchen from Germany. (there was quite a bit of stuff from Germany, which I hadn't seen in any other places) They also have a bakery, which today included gluten-free carrot cake (decent, but Cooqi's is way better) and scones (haven't eaten yet).

For those of you with kids, there was a bunch of frozen items like gluten-free corn dogs, chicken nuggets and fish sticks.

The prices are very good -- lower than Whole Foods and certainly lower than Byerley's/Lund's. It's technically a co-op. I'm not really into that hippy stuff, so I'm not sure what that means. I think you can save even more money if you join, but I don't know what all that entails.

It's a full grocery store, so it also had a decent selection of produce, meat, dairy, cheese, etc.

It's a bit of a drive for me, but I'll go back. You might want to check it out!

I went to Lakewind's today and it is even better than I imagined! It is 70 miles for me, but I will go back. I was delighted to find the glutino microwave dinners (wow!) and the pizzas. And as you say, there were tons of products I have never seen in St. Cloud. They had some unusual flours and mixes. I blew my whole grocery budget for the month in one go... just trying some new things. I bought a loaf of the cooqi bread for about 10$. I hope it is worth it...

I was so happy to find all this stuff! I went home and ate the cinnamon french toast. I even got the corndogs :-)

They also have a list of all the gluten-free products in the store-- it is about 20 pages long in small type. It might be online too. And they have a service where if you call ahead, they will have your order ready to pick up. I am going to study the list and try that next time.

Gluten-free Pizza

Leonardo's Pizzeria in Mahtomedi has started offering gluten-free pizza. I haven't tried it myself, but a celiac friend of mine said it was excellent. www.leonardospizzeria.net

Park Tavern in St. Louis Park (Hwy 5 and Louisiana) has offered gluten-free pizza for a while. I've tried it and it's very good.

Has anyone else found any gluten-free pizza in the Cities? Pizza is probably the thing I miss the most since going gluten-free.

Hello fellow Minnesotans! This is my first time posting on the boards (Although I've peeked at them a bit recently). I have been through the Celiac "battle" with doctors recently (my test results were borderline for Celiac's), and as of January I have been trying to live the gluten free lifestyle, although I have not noticed any difference in my discomfort. I am sticking with the gluten free diet while I continue to try and find answers. In the meantime, I am trying to figure out this gluten-free thing the best I can, and I am so glad to see there is a Minnesota gluten free "team"!!!

My husband and I live in downtown Minneapolis, and I don't know about everyone else, but I feel that after we do our "normal" shopping (fruits, veggies, meat, etc.) that I am always running to at least 2 or 3 other stores to get all the gluten free supplies I need. I am always going to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and the small little gluten free section at our Cub Foods off of Broadway.

Recently, I heard that the downtown Target is going to be adding on a full grocery section. I hope they'll have a gluten free section. I'm going to call in and request it. I've noticed that if ever you fill out the online surveys that are always listed on the bottom of your Target receipts, that they ask if there's any items that you wish Target would carry. I always mention gluten free items. I would encourage everyone to do the same with their surveys whenever you shop at Target. Hopefully our collective voice will be heard and Target will begin to make little gluten free sections!

Also, the Walmart up in Brooklyn Park, MN is adding on and becoming a Walmart Super Center, and I just called in to the head manager today (his name is Bruce) and I requested that they add a gluten free section when planning out their food aisles. Bruce said it was a good thing I called, because they're just putting together a survey in the next two weeks for the types of foods that customers would like to see in the store. I encourage everyone in the area to call and request that they add a gluten free section to their store, and hopefully those items will have the famous "Wal-Mart prices" that I would love to see on some of this expensive stuff!

I love seeing the Minnesota tips on here! Everyone please keep them coming!

Yeah, it is cold. I went snowboarding in Lutsen last weekend, and it was the first time I can remember actually being really whiny and miserable about the cold and wind. Normally the cold doesn't bother me at all.

I've never eaten at a restaurant up there. I go on a ski trip every year with 15-20 other people so we rent a house and do all our cooking there. I bring my own lunch to the ski hill. We do stop for dinner at the Perkins in Duluth, though.

I also live in downtown Minneapolis. I've found that I've nearly stopped buying specialty gluten-free food and can do all my shopping at a regular store. The Wedge is good for gluten-free food, though, and it's probably the closest store with gluten-free products.

Another Downtowner here.

The Lund's just across the river in NE (University & Central) has a gluten-free section -- it's hidden in the baking aisle with all the flour! The Rainbow off 35W in NE also has a gluten-free section. I've found that Target is pretty much the worst store for gluten-free items. The long-promised Whole Foods is supposed to go in at Hennepin & Washington (where the Jaguar dealership was), but I've been hearing about that for 7 years, so I'll believe it when I see it.

For flour, breads and desserts, I won't even bother with anything that's not from Cooqi -- it's 5 minutes from downtown (94 east to the Cretin/Vandalia exit) and I go there almost every day. They even have doughnuts now! (but only on Sundays).

Also, to follow up on my previous post about pizza, Pizza Luce is working on gluten-free pizza. To start, they are only going to offer it in their new St. Paul store, but if it's successful, they will offer it in their other stores.

It seems that I haven't posted here in a long time. I'm still gluten-free, but I guess I'm going through one of those times. Its starting to get to me. Thanks for all the messages letting us know where to go for new food ideas.

I know its kind of random, but if a few people want to get together for a gluten-free meal at a restaurant or something, that would be really cool. I'd be nice to sit and talk to some people about being gluten-free rather than the standard reply... "You what?" ;)

Pizza Luce's St. Paul restaurant is offering gluten-free pizza (and pasta and desserts) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The response had been very good, and they will be adding gluten-free pizza to their other restaurants, too. Definitely worth checking out!

OMIGOSH! I am so excited!

I have never met anyone else with celiac except for my son and I (but according to the stats I probably have met many people who are). So this is an awesome thread.

I went to Pizza Luce in St Paul on Wed and had the Shrimp Al Pesto pizza. It was awesome. It was so nice to have pizza again that I didn't make myself or buy frozen. I was a little nervous but my family was there with me and all wanted a bite of my pizza to try it.

I live in South St Paul. I work in Minneapolis and go to school in St Paul. Reading all these posts has been very informational for me as I didn't realize there were so many gluten-free restaraunts and bakeries out there.

I have been to Cooqi but all I had there was a lemon bar because I was broke (college student...meh!) and it was very tasty. I am going to go there one of these days for some bread because my son recently told me that he misses sandwiches. Poor kid.

Anyway I am very pleased to meet you all. I look forward to getting to knowing you better.

A recent thread about doctors: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=55010 I ended up seeing a different doc at the same place as Dr Torkelson's - Dr Jamie Feldman - and she was very good. No problems with my self-dx, and did lots of good celiac-specific followup tests. Asked some questions that showed me she understood celiac. Also Dr Ronda Stellar in Shoreview was good but too far for me now.

Hi guys, I'm from Braham, 10 minutes north of Cambridge. I grew up in Mora, 25 minutes north of Cambridge. I've been a celiac for 3 years and now i'm eliminating soy because i was having the same symptoms even tho i was gluten-free. I'm feeling 100% better since i'm soy free too and it's only been a week. Oh i just learned on Tuesday that i'm allergic to peanuts too. I usted to eat peanuts daily. Isn't it funny how quickly something changes.

Oh and I forgot to ask- what part of downtown do you live in? I love in the Northloop neighborhood, close to the river, and I cant wait until its warm enough to go walking on the paths there. Do you work downtown as well?

Hey, everyone. It's nice to see some posts here again. :)

We just got back from a great trip to Florida for the kids' break. We visited Orlando and went to SeaWorld parks. I mostly packed snacks for us, but we were able to get a couple of great meals there that were safe. At Aquatica, there was not really anything good, but we did find some packaged brownies from a company here that I had never heard of before. She loved them. The company is called French Meadow Bakery and when we came back, I saw that they are even at the airport. I checked out their site and am going to try a few other things. Their brownies tasted just like the ones I make for her. Has anyone else tried their stuff?

      For me I gave up oat products and it finally cleared. I had a whole body reaction for months. Two additional culprits for me: shared grill at a restaurant or a shared toaster. Hope you have relief soon.

It can be extremely difficult to get reliable information about gluten when it comes to meds, supplements and oral hygiene products. This is especially true since so much of this stuff is generic and comes from over seas. I will deflect with regard to your question about meds and oral products but take you in another direction. Have you tried a low iodine diet. Iodine is known to exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis and some find that a low iodine diet helps reduce the number of outbreaks. By the way, have you had your celiac antibodies retested recently? If they are elevated that might be a clue that you are getting gluten in your oral hygiene products or meds.

      Hi. I’m 70 years old, and a 22 year survivor of head and neck cancer treated with chemo-radiation, which resulted in non-existent submandibular salivary glands and extreme dry mouth and altered oral mucosa. I have been using dry mouth toothpaste, Rx oral dentrifices and moisturizers for years.  I’ve recently been diagnosed with severe celiac dermatitis herpetiformis. I was being treated with oral Dapsone, but it was not effective and I developed some serious side effects. So, the medication was stopped and I was started on Doxycycline (another antibiotic) for inflammation. I’ve been using Rx Betamethasone steroid ointment with little to no effect. I have tried every oral and topical antihistamine treatment available OTC. None have touched this horrible relentless itching. That is my history.  Now to my question. Does anybody know about gluten free toothpastes and mouth moisturizers? I ask because a very common dry mouth brand stated to me that they were indeed gluten free. But as I am not getting any better with my dermatitis herpetiformis, I was wondering if I was getting glutenized some way other than diet as  I have been following a strict clean gluten free diet, but I am not seeing any improvement at all. So, I started looking up the toothpastes and moisturizer ingredients individually and nine (9) of the eleven (11) or so listed showed up as   containing gluten or that may have gluten! Am I getting glutenized orally by these products?  As an aside, I checked on my favorite lavender scented baby lotion which is supposed to be gluten free, but many of those ingredients when investigated separately, show they  do contain or may contain gluten as well. I stopped using the lotion. But I cannot forgo my dental care. I was unable to get any information from the manufacturer of my current brand of chewable multivitamins either. They told me to check with my doctor. If THEY don’t know what’s in their product, how do they think a PCP will?  In light of all this, I am confused and angry that I might keep getting contaminated with gluten through products I am using that are supposedly gluten safe. *I should also state that I have a nickel allergy since I was about 12-13 years old. And I developed a contact allergy to latex (gloves) when I was a student nurse at 19 years old.  I know and I’m sorry that this is so lengthy. I’m trying to do everything I can to combat this condition, and I’m feeling very confused, anxious and angry about not getting adequate information as I try to educate and advocate for myself. I’m hoping someone here is more knowledgeable than me of how to navigate through all of this. Can anyone offer any advice?  Thank you for your time.  Respectfully,  Linda

They assume you have hepatitis if your liver enzymes are elevated. But I was checked for all varieties of hepatitis and that wasn't it. Liver enzymes continued to slowly creep up for another 13 years and my PCP tested me for a lot of stuff and it was all negative. He ran out of ideas. By that time, iron stores were dropping as was albumin and total protein. Finally, I took it upon myself to schedule an appointment with a GI doc and the first thing he did was test me for celiac disease. I was positive of course. After three months of gluten free eating the liver enzymes were back in normal range. That was back in about 1992. Your story and mine are more typical than not. I think the average time to diagnosis from the onset of symptoms and initial investigation into causes for symptom is about 10 years. Things are improving as there is more general awareness in the medical community about celiac disease than there used to be years ago. The risk of small bowel lymphoma in the celiac population is 4x that of the general population. That's the bad news is.  The good news is, it's still pretty rare as a whole. Yes, absolutely! You can expect substantial healing even after all these years if you begin to observe a strict gluten free diet. Take heart! But I have one question. What exactly did the paperwork from 15 years ago say about your having celiac disease? Was it a test result? Was it an official diagnosis? Can you share the specifics please? If you have any celiac blood antibody test results could you post them, along with the reference ranges for each test? Did you have an endoscopy/biopsy to confirm the blood test results?
