Sudden Onset Of Cold Sores/fever Blisters After Being Glutened?

I posted this at my other forum for NH Celiac's... but... thought it would be worthwhile to ask here since this is the place where I've always come to for advice...

Anyway this has never happened to me before and I was curious if it's related to Celiac's disease and/or DH... and/or if anyone else has ever experienced it...

We celebrate every Thanksgiving and Christmas at my parents' home... this year my mom went to a whole lot of trouble to ensure that our annual feast was gluten free... gluten free turkey, gluten free sides and desserts... it was fantastic...

My brother's wife who is filipino... also made some foods and desserts for Turkey Day... spring rolls, sweet and sour pork w/ rice and Halo Halo (an ice cream dessert)... I didn't have the spring rolls... but she told me that the batter for her sweet and sour pork was corn starch... so I indulged... but within a half hour I felt bloated and sick... so I know there was hidden gluten and I'm pretty sure it wasn't in my mom's concoctions because she spent several weeks researching and planning so that her recipes would be completely gluten free...

Anyway... the 'how' doesn't matter... it's the 'what' that's got me sort of freaked... On Friday... fever blisters started to appear everywhere on and around my lips... Now I've had fever blisters or cold sores before.. but usually only after being really sick with a fever... and usually only one... but these things came out of nowhere and just started forming one after the other in the corner of my lips... the front and top...

I've been using Abreva and Herpecin... and they've gotten much better... but since it's never happened to me before I was wondering if it could be gluten related? Any thoughts?

This does not happen to me but I do know that it does with my son. I get sores usually on my scalp but he gets them around his lips, mostly in the corners.

Yes, this does happen to me--but not every time. I recently was CC, and I developed a fever blister (not a cold sore) looking bump on the bottom edge of my lower lip. I still have it today, after a couple of weeks. It dosen't hurt anymore, but I still use a little cover-up to hide it.

This used to happen much more often before I was gluten-free. It's only happened once or twice since.

My son gets mouth ulcers/canker sores. I've not heard of the cold sores, but I 'm sure it's possible. It seems anything is w/ this disease. :( He had a bad stomach ache on Tuesday and then woke up with EIGHT cankers sores Wednesday morning. So painful!!! I feel so bad for him! Good luck w/ yours. :)

my mouth has been full of cold sores since i went gluten free. in fact, the sides of my mouth and tongue are super sensitive, too. i recently took antibiotics for strep throat which seemed to help, but i get a new cold sore on the inside of my lip usually every two days or so.

Sorry about your coldsores, and all other sores. Before I went gluten-free I used to get terrible migraines and coldsores. I thought it was because I was going to get a cold or who knows. Since I was diagnosed with Celiacs and have gone gluten-free I have not had a migraine or cold sore since. I always wondered what those little bumps on the back of head were. Now i think they were some kind of cold sore or of that type. I thought they were in grown hairs (ha ha) but not now.

I am just getting over a cold sore. I was glutened last Saturday and by Sunday night I had one popping out. I only get weird cold sores - I get one on my right temple right near my eye, never around my mouth. This time there were 3 of them there and my eye was almost swollen shut for 4 days. I usually only get these every few years when I'm very run down, and I figured being pregnant means that it didn't take as much for me to get really run down.

I can finally put my contacts back in because I just have dried up scabs now. I was off all last week and I'm afraid it is going to look like someone punched me in the eye. Should be interested.

That darn gluten!

I was glutened two days before Thanksgiving at a restaurant and one of the many unpleasant reactions is a horrible sore (cold sore?) on the top of my palate between my two front teeth. It's still ouchy after 5 days. I was getting this and other things before going gluten-free: chancres in mouth, ridges on sides of mouth, fuzzy feeling in throat and pimples beside or on my lips. (Along with about a gazillion other symptoms) So, I'm pretty sure gluten has something to do with it. Glad yours is gone.

After I get the endoscopy done, I’ll try to be in gluten-free diet even if I test negative for celiac disease or NCGS to avoid any complications. It does suck because I love wheat breads and Indian breads like rotis and naans, lol. I guess I have to jump to gluten-free options for those. Again, thanks for all your help.

@Jack Common, You could do a DNA test to see if you have any of the known genes for Celiac Disease.  If you don't have any genes for celiac disease, look to another source for your health problems.  If you do have celiac disease genes and have improvement on the gluten free diet, you probably have active Celiac.  Further testing would be beneficial. Keep in mind that different gluten containing breads have different amounts of gluten.  Think thick chewy pizza crust and artisan breads, and whole wheat breads for the gluten challenge.  Cookies and pastries do not contain as much gluten.   Since your blood tests were inconclusive, continuing with the gluten challenge may be needed to provoke a stronger autoimmune reaction sufficient for antibodies to get into the blood stream.

I found out I had celiac because of eye problems. I developed an eye irritation that was sensitive to light, pressure, and red. My eye doctor said I had iritis, an inflammation of the iris. The treatment was prednisone drops. This is a common symptom related to ankylosing spondylitis, a form of arthritis that runs in my family. My doctor wanted to start me on immunosuppressants, but I refused due to side effects. I tried a few anti-inflammatory diets and found the specific carb diet helped, which led my doctor to test me for celiac, which was positive. Now I know when I get glutened because I have a flare up of my iritis. I call it my canary in a coal mine. First the eye, then the arthritis flare up begins.

Soap, water and scrubbing won’t “kill” gluten, but it will physically remove it if done well if you also add a thorough rinse step.
