Right now it's -25c but with windchill it feels like -40c. :o The forecast for the week is pretty crappy until Wednesday (high -11c low -26c) and Thursday will be a toasty -1c. I can hardly wait. Global Warming where are you? I guess the conversion to Fahrenheit doesn't matter because it's all the same at -40. Brrr.

Now I am on a quest for low-rise 33" inseam long johns. I have some long johns that are not quite long enough but have a high waist. I feel like a little old man with my waistband up around my armpits. :lol:

My other long johns are low-rise, but barely get to my calfs. I guess they're short johns.

I hear ya, I bundled up in my layers to take the dog out, put on ski pants to block the wind as well. Katie (pictured - she's the bigger one) was running around in "speed circles" scooping up snow in her mouth and being rather silly. She was grateful to come inside the house after it was all over.

I think I will be okay for at elast 6 hours til I have to go out again, she's curled up in ball and looking quite happy to stay indoors. :D

I didnt have to look far cause I hadnt yet put away my stuff from the fall campout a week ago. I am soooooooo happy I dont have to pee in an outhouse on a day like this!!!! hat's all I kep thinking last weekend when I was up at 7 a.m. and having to walk to the biffy 100 feet from the camp. brrrr :blink:

The front page of our local paper this morning featured a big photograph of a guy surfing along the Rideau rapids here in Ottawa (in a drysuit, mind you). Right beside this photo was another one of a mom and her daughter making this big snowman on their lawn...they're in Vancouver. The big caption read, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?" Hey, nothing as far as I'm concerned. What a rare treat to be here at the end of November in 12 degree weather. Just doesn't happen in Ottawa! I'm thinking of you guys out west, and praying for a chinook.... :)

I hat to rain on your parade but the last four days have been just perfect in Michigan. 55-60 deg F and no rain. I had the day off and rode my bike for five hours. Thursday we are supposed to get cold again.

I know what you mean. I've been wearing my rib crushing long underwear for the past few freezing days. Why do they make them that high and that short all at the same time?

Oh my goodness!! :o:o .BRRRRR!!

A balmy 13c (54f) here in London - I thought it was getting chilly in the evening though!! :lol:

My hubby is always cold (he's a coeliac) and has no qualms whatsoever about wearing long johns that come up to his armpits!! :lol: ..so long as he feels warm in winter!!

I ended up stopping by REI last night and getting a couple more pairs of silk underwear while it was on sale. That stuff is fabulous. (It's not low-rise, but it's not terribly high-rise either, and I'm low-waisted.)

No kidding, we got 5 and half inches in Everett. This is not normal weather fo WA, let alone in Nov!

Trust me, you don't want low-rise long johns. Consider how cold all those young girls with the love handles hanging out over their pants, and waist length winter jackets feel when the cold hits their midriff! I, for one, do not want a frostbitten belly button!!! LOL! Besides, if you really have to have fashionably lengthed long johns, you can just roll the top edge down.

So, I wear my Helly Hansen long johns a little higher in the waist above my jeans...doesn't matter much when my sweater goes below my waist...covers it up nicely. The best is that my long johns are thin enough to fit comfortably under my snug-fitting jeans. With my 3/4 length down parka, scarf & toque, I'm quite the fashion plate, but hey, I'm warm! :D

Today I fought with my daughter (4) to actually wear socks under her boots and mittens on her hands. For some reason she is always hot, even when the weather is -33C with the windchill like today. And we had to be out of the house and in and out of the car a lot today too. Blech!

I know this is a little off topic but.....

Michelle does your daughter have celiac? Before my diagnosis I was always hot. So much that when my family went camping in the mountains my parents and my sister would fight over who I was sleeping with. I was a small kid about 4ish too. They said I was a heater.

I remember sometimes I would get so hot I would throw up in the summer time. That lasted for a few years after I was gluten free.

Right now the temperature is -28C (-39C with the wind chill)! Tonight the weather network says -30C. Yay! I've been wearing long john's for a while now.. since October.

That's how it's been here, too.

It's beautiful! It is supposed to go from 68 on Friday to 51 on Saturday. Still not too bad for early December :D

We'll be about 68 till Thursday, but Friday it drops to 46, then 40 on Saturday. I think we just get the cold fronts a little before you do. Sounds like our climate must be similar.

ok you guys , send some warm weather up here!

On top of the cold sanp and frigid wind chills, I have to walk everywhere including walking the kids to school all bundled up so they get there safe. Dearest hubby smashed up his truck (no one hurt, thank goodness) and is using my car to get to his job. :o

I am cold to the bone and wrapped in blanket after being outside yet again. Supposed to warm up later in the week. Yipee :)

Gosh Sandy--you must be freezing! I wish I could send some of our sunshine your way. You guys keep warm--and we'll be joining you in the cold in no time, I have a feeling :angry::D

:D 6 sleeps until Disneyland! By then it'll be "warm" here <_< . -10 up to 0. So 32F or a bit below. I guess I should say I want hipster long johns. I have nice long undershirts to tuck in, and I find it very uncomfortable and bulky to fold the waistband down and have the ankles at my calves. The perks of being all leg and no torso. :rolleyes:

Hi Laurie,

We don't know if she has celiac. I suspect there is something dietary behind her eczema & asthma, and we do know that she has multiple airborne allergens (pollens, dander, mold, mildew), but all food tested as negative. My oldest (son) has GI issues we're working through, and my middle (son) has multiple sensitivies (touch, taste, smell, sound), is a selective eater and is rail thin. I think all of them could potentially be celiac (all three have allergies)...but it will likely be a long process figuring it all out.

I'd be tempted to take "snow" days (or is that frozen days?) off from school and errands.

A friend yesterday waited with her son for 35 minutes in these temps for a school bus that didn't show up (she later got home to hear the bus didn't start.) There were 7 other neighbourhood kids with her, and most of them couldn't go home, because their parents had already left for work! She had quite the time figuring out how to get the kids safely to school...luckily another neighbourhood mom drove by and was able to shuttle the kids in her van.

The schools do not shut down unless there is a windchill of -50C! Apparently there once was an incident where a parent dropped a kid off at a closed school and drove off. So it's got to be awfully cold for them to actually close the doors now. Sometimes the buses don't run because of road conditions. We need to listen to the radio in the am for bus info.

Frost bite is possible within one minute in some of these tempertaures in Alberta! This is what we have to look forward to tonight:

"The stationary Yukon high which brought frigid conditions to much of Alberta remains entrenched over western Canada. Northwesterly outflow winds from this high over central and southern Alberta are expected to produce extreme wind chill values after sunset and into Wednesday morning. Wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45 are forecast for the above mentioned warning regions."

Yes. When I went out to my car after excerise class last night, breathing hurt...didn't give me an asthma attack though. It was -40 w/windchill at that point in the evening.

I was tempted but my errands included insulin and blood test strips, Kathryn has already missed a lot of school this past month with various 'bugs" that have been going through school. It always seems to hit her harder than Matt.... ever since the Kawasaki - she doesnt recover as quickly from any virus , takes extra days and lots more sleep. Other moms of kids that have had KD say the same thing.

On a positive note - its getting warmer!! :):)

Up to - 20 Celcius ......

It will feel downright balmy by Friday when it gets to 0

I don't find it hard to breathe regularly but taking a deep breath is out of the question. The kids have had indoor recesses since Monday and I think they are going a bit nutty. It'll be a relief for them and the teachers to get outside tomorrow (I hope!) and blow off some steam.

Last February I was on a plane talking to a college student from Germany who was going to Edmonton for a work/study program. She said that in Germany they have a saying "There is no bad weather, only bad clothes." I told her to get back to me after her first -30 with -40 windchill. Even with long johns/snow pants, winter coat, toque, mitts, scarf, boots, etc. It's still cold in that weather. It's slightly less bad if you're shoveling or walking briskly, but as you mentioned Carrie, it's so hard to breathe.

Oh well, it's supposed to warm up soon. My parents are on Vancouver Island and they have 40cm of snow which is extremely unusual. I don't think it's ever snowed that much in their town, but in 1996 in Victoria they had a lot. 60cm or so.

      Welcome to the forum, @Cathijean90! I went 13 years from the first laboratory evidence of celiac disease onset before I was diagnosed. But there were symptoms of celiac disease many years before that like a lot of gas. The first laboratory evidence was a rejected Red Cross blood donation because of elevated liver enzymes. They assume you have hepatitis if your liver enzymes are elevated. But I was checked for all varieties of hepatitis and that wasn't it. Liver enzymes continued to slowly creep up for another 13 years and my PCP tested me for a lot of stuff and it was all negative. He ran out of ideas. By that time, iron stores were dropping as was albumin and total protein. Finally, I took it upon myself to schedule an appointment with a GI doc and the first thing he did was test me for celiac disease. I was positive of course. After three months of gluten free eating the liver enzymes were back in normal range. That was back in about 1992. Your story and mine are more typical than not. I think the average time to diagnosis from the onset of symptoms and initial investigation into causes for symptom is about 10 years. Things are improving as there is more general awareness in the medical community about celiac disease than there used to be years ago. The risk of small bowel lymphoma in the celiac population is 4x that of the general population. That's the bad news is.  The good news is, it's still pretty rare as a whole. Yes, absolutely! You can expect substantial healing even after all these years if you begin to observe a strict gluten free diet. Take heart! But I have one question. What exactly did the paperwork from 15 years ago say about your having celiac disease? Was it a test result? Was it an official diagnosis? Can you share the specifics please? If you have any celiac blood antibody test results could you post them, along with the reference ranges for each test? Did you have an endoscopy/biopsy to confirm the blood test results?

      I’ve just learned that I had been diagnosed with celiac and didn’t even know. I found it on paperwork from 15 years ago. No idea how this was missed by every doctor I’ve seen after the fact. I’m sitting here in tears because I have really awful symptoms that have been pushed off for years onto other medical conditions. My teeth are now ruined from vomiting, I have horrible rashes on my hands, I’ve lost a lot of weight, I’m always in pain, I haven’t had a period in about 8-9 months. I’m so scared. I have children and I saw it can cause cancer, infertility, heart and liver problems😭 I’ve been in my room crying for the last 20minutes praying. This going untreated for so long has me feeling like I’m ruined and it’s going to take me away from my babies. I found this site googling and I don’t know really what has me posting this besides wanting to hear from others that went a long time with symptoms but still didn’t know to quit gluten. I’m quitting today, I won’t touch gluten ever again and I’m making an appointment somewhere to get checked for everything that could be damaged. Is this an automatic sentence for cancer and heart/liver damage after all these symptoms and years? Is there still a good chance that quitting gluten and being proactive from here on out that I’ll be okay? That I could still heal myself and possibly have more children? Has anyone had it left untreated for this amount of time and not had cancer, heart, fertility issues or liver problems that couldn’t be fixed? I’m sure I sound insane but my anxiety is through the roof. I don’t wanna die 😭 I don’t want something taking me from my babies. I’d gladly take anyone’s advice or hear your story of how long you had it before being diagnosed and if you’re still okay?

      Genetic testing cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease but it can be used to rule it out and also to establish the potential to develop celiac disease. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop it. To develop celiac disease when you have the genetic potential also requires some kind of trigger to turn the latent genes "on", as it were. The trigger can be a lot of things and is the big mystery component of the celiac disease puzzle at this point in time with regard to the state of our knowledge.  Your IGA serum score would seem to indicate you are not IGA deficient and your tTG-IGA score looks to be in the normal range but in the future please include the reference ranges for negative vs. positive because different labs used different reference ranges. There is no industry standard.

      Since nearly 40% of the population have the genes for celiac disease, but only ~1% end up getting it, a genetic test will only tell you that it is possible that you could one day get celiac disease, it would not be able to tell whether you currently have it or not.

      so much to it.  the genetic testing will help if i don’t have it right? If theres no gene found then I definitely don’t have celiac?  I guess genetic testing, plus ruling out h.pylori, plus gluten challenge will be a good way to confirm yes or no for celiac.
