How Do You Resist The Temptation?

I am sitting at my desk looking at the nicest fruit cake I have seen all Christmas, and it is so difficult to resist. I am trying though, my boss just gave it to me he doesn't know thw extent of my allergies

How do you do it? Need encouragement !!!!!!

Oh, isn't that the worst?

My first thought: How long have you been gluten-free? I ask because I used to cheat now & then before I was gluten-free long enough to feel better and really have a sense of how awful gluten made me feel. So for a good 2 years or so, I was *really* whiny about what I couldn't have. Now I'm only moderately whiny. :rolleyes:

I'm all in favor of the "Oh, it was so sweet of you to think of me!" & then find the forbidden item a new home ASAP technique.

As for the encouragement: Go jamrock! Hang in there! Everyone here wants you to be happy and healthy. This is undoubtedly the toughest time of year to be wheatless. Be strong! You can do it! Think of how much work you've done to get better! [Plus, you know the stories about fruitcake-- for all we know, it could have been "re-gifted" several times already!]

Also, I highly recommend splurging on a gluten-free decadent goodie. Make some gluten-free coffee cake. Look for a recipe for gluten-free fruitcake. Buy those expensive gluten-free cookies/brownies/whatever. Give yourself a nice treat that you can enjoy guilt-free.

When I went to my Mom's for the holidays, I brought my favorite gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and allowed myself one per day. It really helped to keep me from feeling too sorry for myself amid the usual temptations.

And of course: post early, post often! That's why we're all here. :P

Whenever I'm tempted I remind myself how bad I'll feel later. It usually works, not always, but most of the time. I messed up a litte over Christmas.

You've all been encouraging thanks alot however my biggest problem is a do not know what to eat I just really discovered the source of my illness about 3 weeks ago. My major problem is that where I live many persons don't know about this allergy and so the health food stores will stock more wheat and soy stuff I don't recall seeing anything glutten free

I end up cooking like I never done and sometimes I am not sure of the cooking oil, I cook the same food over and over for the last week and it gets boring so I get hungry, I just realized that I am reacting to soy or something else. Just imagine i do not have gluten free snacks cookie or bread I am slowly starving, I may have to travel overseas and ship some stuff, I really don't know where to start

I need serious help little or no glutten free stuff on this island

In that case, here are some recipe sites in which you may find some "normal" recipes to follow (with fewer specialty products). There's an awesome recipe for brownies on the glutenfreegoddess site....I used whole almonds and used my cheapo electric coffee grinder to grind them into a flour. Turned out AWESOME.

Sorry if this get a little gross, but I am never tempted because I know a few bites into that fruit cake I would have the worst nausea and I would run to the fridge in search of something to drink (usually soda) to fight back with gravity, but to no avail when I finally not only throw up but blow chunks out my nose....nice! And then I have to smell it for the rest of the day. A few days later and my normally nice skin (on my face) looks like a greasy meatball!! I think that about sums it up :P uh huh yeah

      Okay, Lori, we can agree on the term "gluten-like". My concern here is that you and other celiacs who do experience celiac reactions to other grains besides wheat, barley and rye are trying to make this normative for the whole celiac community when it isn't. And using the term "gluten" to refer to these other grain proteins is going to be confusing to new celiacs trying to figure out what grains they actually do need to avoid and which they don't. Your experience is not normative so please don't proselytize as if it were.

      When I was first Dg’d I researched like mad. One thing I remember from then, which may have changed with advancement in medical science, is that Coeliac is a first generation disease which means either you or your husband need be Coeliac for your daughter to have inherited it. Far as I know, and I’m not a scientist just a victim, the amount of gluten (wheat, rye, or barley) one consumes does not cause a person to contract Coeliac Disease. So if neither of you as her biological parents have Coeliac then your daughter cannot pass any blame should she contract this horrific disease.     It’s humbling, and sometimes I believe GOD allows such as these autoimmune diseases for those who need it most.

      The body reacts to all grain proteins in all grains from my observation. Call it Gluten, Gliadin, which is what they test for commonly, however, I am Celiac and react with dermatitis herpetiformis to corn and the glutenous protein in it is called Zein. They only test for Gliadin. Testing needs to be updated in my opinion. It only take a small parts per million to continuously create systemic inflammation. This is not productive to healing and all grains contain some for gluten like substance. It's called Molecular Mimicry.

      I disagree, Lori. Gluten is a particular protein, not a category of proteins. It is found in wheat, barley and rye. Other cereal grains have proteins that resemble gluten to one degree or another but are not gluten. Gluten is gluten. Avenin is avenin. But yes, it is true, that informally speaking, some have used the term "gluten" to refer to the proteins found in these other cereal grains. It's like the term "kleenex" has come to refer to all facial tissues.
