Ugh! Glutened Or Legumed..or Something.

Ugh, I feel so crappy. Diarrea, nausea, stomach hurts a bit, irregular heart beat sometimes, foggy thinking and super tired. The only new thing I have had is frozen salmon and raisins. I had some yesterday of the fish for the first time. It gotta be it and then I had some more today and I feel so bad.

I wonder how frozen fish could make one feel glutened?? It said it had only fish in it, nothing else.

Anyone else had this experience?

I did have Kinnickinniks Flax Seed bread too today. It has made me feel a bit off sometimes too. I decided not to get more and had the last piece today. It seemed to taste a little different. They do use Legumes in their stuff but not in this bread... I dunno. I have never felt this crappy at all from it.

I hate it when that happens. I eat frozen fish often and I also eat Kinnikinnick products without any problems. I hope you can figure out what it was that bothered you. Were the raisins safe?

Yenni Enthusiast

The raisins were some kind of organic type. Just said sun dried raisins on them with nothing else. The fish is supposed to be the same. I have had that brand before but not Salmon. Then I have been eating same stuff as I always do...I have no idea. I was nauseau really bad during the night and my stomach and body is really unhappy today. I feel beat, like I usually do from gluten. It is a mystery.

I hate when it is a mystery. When you can't really pinpoint why.

Well, I am not gonna eat the raisins and that Salmon again. Not the Kinnickinniks bread either. Not the Flax Seed one anyways. I have noticed that I do not do well on white rice, brown is better. The Robin bread doesn't have it I believe and I seem to do better on it.

Ugh, hate feeling this crappy. I have started to feel much better so it almost hits you harder now when you know what it feels like to have a happier stomach and more energy.

I think I always get a little inflammed in my stomach when ever this happens. I take Caraphate (I think that is the spelling) and it seems to always help me back on track faster.

Kinnickinnick bread makes me so sick. I ate some last week and had an instantaneous reaction. My whole body got really itchy and I had stomach pains then my lips got really itchy and I was bloated and my throat got tight. I don't think it's a cc issue with them. I think their products contain too many scary sounding artificial ingreidients. It's not really food :( It's a bummer too because their products taste really good

I have been eating two of their breads for a couple of weeks. The rest had pea protein in them and I can't have any Legumes. I seem to get some heart burn from especially the Flaz Seed one but I have never felt anything close to this. I have no idea if it was the bread or not. I am almost guessing it isn't since I have been eating it regularly for a while and not gotten this way until now. But who knows. Maybe the last litle end of this bread had more of something cross contaminated..

I wanna say it is the fish. My hands turned orange as I took it out of the package. Salmon is orange, but I have never seen fish do that. Maybe they put something on it without saying they do...I dunno.

The raisins are pretty new for me too, but I never reacted this way when I tried them a couple of days ago.

I think I'll never find out for sure though.

I can't remember the brand of the fish now. Brain fog is making it rteally hard to think. I was chatting with a friend online yesterday and it was hard to remember how to spell things. Freaky. That seems a little better today.

I am gonna ask my husband about the brand and post it here. Maybe someone knows something or at least can get a warning to be careful with this brand. If itv was the fish.. Just seems like it.

About bread: To be really truthful I do not seem to be doing all that great on any grains or bread. I can have a little bit o0f brown Rice and feel fine on it but if I try other grains or eat more than a cup (if even that) my stomach gets gasy and a little unhappy, but I don't get the gluten reaction or anything.

I think I figured out what made me sick. The Salmon had food coloring on it. I noticed another frozen salmon package had that listed and my hands turned all orange as I touched the Salmon I ate.

I think I saw someone saying food coloring can have gluten in it???

I wanted to respond to this post as this exact same thing happened to me. But I had eaten some ham and had some raisins. I think it's important to share and identify possible sources of problems.

I went and inspected the raisins for any possible flour contanimation. As I was doing so, I noticed that there was a potassium rating of 310 mg per 1/4 cup which is huge! I probably had a cup of those raisins snacking on them! Plus I had a some advocado with a salad (not knowing that the raisins were so high in potassium!). I had the exact same symptoms as you, but I realized it was not being glutened, but I had too much potassium. Also, the sugary nature of raisins probably didn't help either.

When I was trying to increase my potassium intake I noticed that I got D when I over did it. I think its the body's mechanism of getting rid of the potassium it can't handle. And I felt crappy as you so eloquently described.

It's important to be careful before we rule out a food because we had a reaction. I'm not ruling out miscellaneous cross contaminations with the raisins (I know the other foods are safe), but I think this is the most likely explanation.

Also, another note, I know that many have given up potatoes (I have for a while). It's important to be sure to replace that with a source of potassium for a balanced diet.

I mean to post what brand the fish was. It is called Wild Pacific. The Halibut was fine but the salmon, well my fingers turned orange so they must have had a coloring on it. Unlabeled.

I read that the same food coloring as is used in yellow cheese is usually used in fish. I did a search on this board and it is said to be gluten free, but can create a reaction in Celiacs. So maybe it was it.

I haven't has the raisins or the fish after that so who knows for sure. I didn't eat that many raisins and had them a couple of times before I had the salmon, so I am still guessing on the Salmon.

The intestinal tract can be as long as twenty-two feet long, so intestinal damage may be out of the reach of endoscopy tools.  Some people have had more success with capsule endoscopy, but this method cannot take biopsies.

@Jack Common, It's possible that your antibiotic for giardiasis has caused thiamine deficiency.   https://hormonesmatter.com/metronidazole-toxicity-thiamine-deficiency-wernickes-encephalopathy/ And... Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/ For clarification, the weight of your slice of bread is not equal to the amount of gluten in it.   Gluten helps form those big holes in breads, so breads like thick chewy pizza crust and artisan breads contain more gluten than cakes and cookies.

Sorry about that link.  It was meant for a different post.   Do consider taking high dose Vitamin D in order to get your level up to around 80 nm/l quickly.   This is the level where Vitamin D can properly work like a hormone and can improve the immune system and lower inflammation.  It makes a big difference.   I took high dose Vitamin D and really improved quickly.  I ate Vitamin D supplements throughout the day like m&ms.  My body craved them.  Very strange, I know, but it worked.   Before you have surgery, you really need to improve your vitamins and minerals.  Vitamins A and D, Vitamin C and Niacin are extremely important to skin health and repair.  Without these, the body does not repair itself neatly.  I've got a scar worthy of a horror movie.  My doctors were clueless about nutritional deficiencies. A sublingual Vitamin B12 supplement will work better for boosting levels.  Tablets or liquid drops in the mouth are easily absorbed directly into the blood stream.   Do bear in mind that about half of Celiac people react to the protein in dairy, Casein, the same as they react to gluten because segments of the protein in Casein resembles segments of the protein Gluten.  Some people lose the ability to produce lactase, the enzyme that digests Lactose, the sugar in dairy, as they age.  Others lose the ability to produce lactase because the intestinal Villi become damaged during the autoimmune response against gluten, and damaged chili can't produce lactase.   Do try Benfotiamine.  It has been shown to improve gastrointestinal health and neuropathy. Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks sending me additional links including how to test for thiamine deficiency. With regards to your first link, I wasn't diagnosed with giardiasis and I didn't take antibiotic for it. I try to generally stay away from antibiotic unless absolutely necessary as it might affect gut health. For treating phimosis, the doctor didn't give me antibiotics. I need to have a circumcision surgery which I haven't got around to schedule it.

I'm not vegan, just vegetarian. I consume dairy but not egg. So I have started including some Vitamin D fortified milk as well as a multivitamin with 2000 IU daily. For Vitamin B12, like you said it's very difficult to get it from just vegetarian sources and have started consuming Vitamin B Complex daily. My PCP was worried when my Vitamin D result came out as It was 3.7 ng/ml last year. He said that being low for a lengthy time could have done some damage to the body over the years. Now, though Vitamin D level has improved after the supplements, I'm not sure if the neurological damage has already been done. I'll continue including the supplements and see if my symptoms improve. I'll also get tested for celiac to see if I need to be in gluten-free diet.
