I was just telling someone about some of the unseen hazards of cross-contamination and shared this little cautionery tale --

Back before my kids were gluten-free, and we had a gluten-y household, I did pretty good not getting glutened. One day I had just given my kids a handful of goldfish crackers and didn't wash my hands. I was quite comfortable at being the only gluten-free person in the house by that point, so it was no big deal. I always washed my hands before I ate anyway.

A few minutes later, I got a piece of fuzz in my mouth and automatically just put my fingers in my mouth to pull it off my tongue. AAAAGGGG!! Pfthttt!!!

Yea..., sick for two days... :rolleyes:

Anyone else have any "Doh!" stories?

I once bought 2 boxes of cereal, one gluten free and one wheat, same brand. Ate a full bowl of...you guessed it, the wheat cereal. Talk about panic...sick for weeks.

I didn't get glutened by this, but I could have so easily! I was at a family reunion and we always have ice cream. My cousin had bought some vanilla and I checked it for gluten--nothing. So, I got my ice cream and sat down. My daughter came running up and screamed, "Mom, what are you doing?" I was like, "UMMMMMMMMMM, eating ice cream!" She then reminded me, "Mom, you can't have cones!" Can you believe I checked the ice cream and never even thought about the fact that I can't have cones??????????? I had barely touched the ice cream, so I threw it out. Saved by the daughter!!!!!!!!!!!

I then wet a paper towel and started wiping it across my tongue. Long story short is nothing happened and there were no witnesses to this behavior. Soon after we got self-adhesive envelopes.

i did this one once...unfortunately i didn't realize my mistake until after it was too late. :P that's always a funny one...uh, yeah i got sick from licking an envelope...

i also just had a bad experience today. i got up late, and so didn't fully prepare a lunch. halfway through the day, i have no food, and i'm starving, and one of the girls says she's going to taco bell. well at this point, i'm starting to have a blood sugar attack from my hypoglycemia, so i just ask her to pick me up some chips. i'm so out of it that i don't even take the time to wonder if i'm gonna get sick from it. so here i am 3 hours later, stomach swollen and head cloudy. i don't know which one is worse...the 24 hr. hangover from hypoglycemia or the 3 day stomach and head pains from gluten. neither is fun, but i'm totally pissed at myself for not packing food. i'm gonna have to keep a stock of food at the office i think. :P

Perhaps this one needs to be in the script for that reality show :lol: I would have liked to be a fly on the wall.

But yes Tom, self-adhesive envelopes and stamps are a thing I'm no longer without.

Rolled down the window and started spiting at every stop sign and red light all the way home, 4 miles. Luckily I had some water to help with the spiting. I refused to swallow the whole way home. Once home I brushed my teeth and spit some more. I have no idea if I got sick since I was still recoverying. I can only imagine what the other drivers thought of me spiting!

We were at the ATM last week and I accidentally licked the deposit envelope. I was in the passenger seat, my husband was driving. I started freaking out and spitting out the window. My husband was laughing and the driver behind us must have thought I was crazy.

It was pretty funny....I am still very early in my diet so it's hard to say what is/isn't making me sick, but the whole ordeal was pretty funny.

I glutened my son last night!! :(

The kids had lasagne for dinner.I already had a frozen gluten-free one made for my coeliac son and made a fresh (non gluten-free) one for the other two kids...there was some non gluten-free left over which I left on the work top...

After dinner I heard my hubby shout ...''Can he have this??'' from the kitchen

....I leapt out of my chair to see coeliac son happily munching the NON gluten-free left over lasagne!!!!

I made the poor kid jump out of his skin by screaming ''SPIT IT OUT!!!''

AAARRGGGGHH!!! (knew I should have cleared it away :( )

Coeliac son seems ok today...but has toxic wind!!! :blink:

BAD MUMMY ....DOH!!!! <_<

I bet, there were some smarta...s at this reunion that stuck their heads together and were like 'I told you, she's faking it' and stupid stuff like that. You know, how it goes!

I have a story to share with accidentaly getting gluten, too! I think, I was like a year or so into the diet. On my way home, I thought, hm, I could stop at the supermarket and get myself something to munch on. So I stopped at the supermarket about 7 miles before I get home. I grabbed a Milky Way and already was on my way out of the parking lot, when I noticed, the Milky Way tasted kind of strange. So I looked for the expiration date and by accident happened to read the ingredients on that Milky Way. Wheat Flour? Baaah! I did the same thing, rolled the window down and started spitting, not intending to swallow. Then half a mile later it happened. I swallowed by accident and started to freak out! Well, thankfully not much happened, I was just a little irritated. Could have been worse...

So last weekend, my neighbours (really friendly couple) knocked on my door with a steaming bowl. We've just had breakfast, she said, and I made this oatmeal. We've got tons left. . .would you like a bowl? Sure, I said.

Would you believe I finished the bowl? After nearly seven years!

God, I felt soooooo stupid the rest of the day (as well as sick!)

I often dream about eating a sandwich, then realizing what I've done. So surreal; so scary!

      My dad had an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.  Fortunately, it was discovered during an exam.  The doctor could feel my dad's heart beating in his stomach/abdomen.  The aneurysm burst when the doctor first touched it in surgery.  Since he was already hooked up to the bypass machine, my dad survived ten more years.  Close call!       You have an odd story there. To me, the mechanical trigger suggests a mechanical problem and lower leg pain is a classic sciatica symptom. The fact that the clear mechanical linkage is no longer there does not take away from the fact that it was - maybe something shifted and the simple alignment is no longer there. There's also a good chance I am wrong and it's something else entirely. @Scott Adams's mention of shingles is interesting. It seems possible but unlikely to me, but who knows. However, I am writing here to reinforce the idea of getting the shingles vaccine. Ask anyone who has ever had shingles and they will bend your ear telling you how bad it is. I watched my wife go through it and it scared the bejeebers out of me. Even if you had the chicken pox vaccine, you really want to get the shingles vaccine.

      Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.

      I had MRI scan a few years ago showing everything normal, and now it's no longer triggering the nerve pain when I bow my head today - it only seemed to happen yesterday, and that was the only time it happened! Just seemed weird as no movement has caused my usual nerve pain before. It's normally just random.
