So tomorrow is my endoscopy in Saskatoon. I'm so terrified. My nerves are going off the roof. I'll never sleep tonight. I've gone through an endoscopy before, was even AWAKE from not enough anesthetics, I KNOW this time it can't be any worse. But i'm still sooooo scared. Also tomorrow is when I have to start eating gluten...I sent a text message to some friends and i honestly cried just from writing a text message, I feel so pathetic. Everyone please help me.....I need you all :(

Oh, I'll be thinking of you. I was a complete wreck when I was gonna have one done too. It wasn't because of gluten and I had it done in Sweden (where they give nothing but a little spray to numb the throat). Let them know you didn't get enough meds to sleep last time, if they don't already know.

My heart goes out to you. I hate those things too.

I hope it will go fast and easy.

Lisa:

You are going through the worst of it right now. It is very natural to be nervous, but truley, the endo is no problem at all.

When I had mine, they gave me a shot and I drifted away. And then I woke up in the recovery room where my husband was waiting for me. I remember nothing in between.

Make sure that you take someone with you who can listen what the doctor will tell you. I remember nothing about what he told me and had to ask my husband three times.

YOU WILL DO JUST FINE! :D

Lisa,

I'll be thinking about you tomorrow, and will keep you in my prayers :)

It's natural to be afraid, but everything is going to be ok--it really is. Don't forget to breathe deeply--in through the nose, and out through the mouth. I do that when I need to relax.

Hopfully this procedure will give some more clues as to what may be the cause of your pain.

You take care, and let us know how you do. :)

I hope it goes well Lisa. I have just recently had my second one and it went good. i asked for lots of drugs and i don't remember a thing from this one... i would recommend doing this! I am sure you will do okay though. My thoughts will be with you. I went gluten free before my first endoscopy too and had to eat gluten for 4 months before the test... and though it can be hard, it is worth it in the end to know 100% for sure. Take care,

Courtney

Lisa,

Best of luck to you. You might want to mention to them that you didn't do well with their sedation last time, and want to ensure you are out the whole time.

Let us know how it goes....

Thanks. Last time it was a different doctor and different hospital but the same city...so I think I will tell them make sure to give me a lot of sedation because I SO dont wanna be awake for it again.

Hey guys. I managed to find another internet connection again, still in the city for another few hours (dad and sis have they appts). Heres a bit of an outline..

the doc was like "i cant give you enough sedation to put you to sleep" so he gave me some but guess what...awake for the whole thing and no freezing :( . and then he says from what he saw he cant see anything there :( :(...but i gotta go back in a month or so to see the actual results.

He blames it on not enough fibre, and of course my mom had to hear that, now thats all shes blabbling on and on about, even tho I told her and the doc I make sure i eat as much brown rice as I can etc. and i'm gonna order higher fibre than usual bread from kinnikinnick. GOD SHES SO ANNOYING!!!

Anyways, my throat killed me all day yesterday and its still pretty sore today. Swallowing still hurts. I didnt think going 16 hours without food or drink can make a person so thirsty.

And my hand, my god. from the IV. I had to get my sister to tie up my hikers and zip up my bunnyhug!

And the worst part is the eating gluten, of course. Had to start that yesterday. SO i treated myself to some pizza and breadsticks, that'll be my lunch again today. And I'm still determined to eat a sub and some donuts before this weekend is done. I already feel like puking just from the pains.

I didnt get a note from my doc for the school, they can kiss my..butt. i honestly dont care. If they give me heck for not having a note I think i'd just cry. How can they really expect me to show up like this?

Theres your story. Keep replying if you want, I still need all your help to get me thru the next 4 days.

Sorry it all been so rough on you Lisa :(

You are in my thoughts and I just know that you'll get through the rest of it ok.

You are a tough little cookie! I know it's hard right now, but won't it all be worth it if they find the source of all that pain?

Eat a little of that real pizza for me, please? :D

Nantzie Collaborator

Lisa, I'm sorry things are so rough and so frustrating. I hope these tests give you some new answers and not just some half-@ss "eat more fiber" BS from a doctor who has never gone through any of this stuff. To have to hear that after eating gluten, AND to have them not give you enough meds AND not even freeze your throat? Come on people! Grr...

Well, have a donut for me. Glazed-raised please? :D

Hugs, hugs and more hugs. (And a kick in the shin for the doctor. :P )

I hope you get some answers. Hang in there despite the not too good treatment.

Usually, the blood testing is done first and the endoscopy/biopsy follows for confirmation if there are positive antibody test scores. Historically, the endoscopy with biopsy has been considered to be the gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease. If the tTG-IGA scores are very high (5x-10x normal), some doctors will forego the endoscpoy/biopsy and grant a celiac disease diagnosis without it. So, if you are starting with the endoscopy/biopsy that may be all you need to arrive at a diagnosis. Another possibility would be for the GI doc to do a blood draw for antibody testing on the same day you come in for the endoscopy/biopsy.

Thanks,Scott. Yes, I had already seen those

Unless your blood antibody levels are 10x the celiac disease positive level they usually do an endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis.  Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

I haven't had any of this blood work and my GI doctor immediately scheduled the endoscopy with biopsy based on the large area of inflammation found during my colonoscopy and me relating all the other symptoms I'm experiencing. If the blood testing is positive do you still have to have the endoscopy with a positive biopsy to be definitively diagnosed with celiac? Seems like a waste of money and risk to do it backwards 😕

Many super sensitive celiacs do have issues with this, especially if they work in a bakery or area where flour may be in the air. Some even seem to have issues being in areas where bread is being baked. Here are some threads here on this:
