Whole Foods 365 Crispy Rice?

It does not appear on their gluten free list.

The Allergy warning doesn't mention wheat. Even in the statement about good manufacturing processes.

Ingredient list:

Rice, Cane juice crystals, Salt, Caramel Color, Ascorbic Acid, Reduced Iron

,Niacinamide, Vitamin A Palmitate, Pyridoxine Hydropchloride, Riboflavin, Thiamin Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D

Should I be worried? I'm trying to get this label thing figured out, and this one confuses me. I see nothing that sets off warning bells, but it's not on their list, and gluten free isn't on the box. Many other 365 products mention Gluten free

Looks okay to me. Maybe the list isn't updated ... plus, I don't think they are always complete.

Oh Sorry. It was obvious to me, since the box is right in front of me! :P

It's the cereal.

I wondered about that one too. It was my first trip to Whole Foods and I was a little overwhelmed. I was after granola bars and bread. I don't eat a lot of cold cereal. I'm more of a snacker when I get to work. I'm hoping you stumbled on to a great find.

Well, I just ate a bowl. Let's hope I don't get sick, because it sure wouldn't be worth it. These things are gross!

ugh.

Another GFGF.

(gluten free gross food)

Well I hope they are gluten-free. You can always make rice krispie treats. Maybe they will be good for that.

Then maybe it will be a GFGF (gluten free good food!!!!)

Geoff,

Would you mind elaborating a little as I was considering getting some? Not crispy enough? Not sweet enough? Did you eat them in a bowl with real milk? Thanks,

best regards, lm

Sure. Texture was weird. The got this weird slimy texture to them, with little spots of crunchy. Not just soggy, but slimy. They stick to my teeth and get stuck in my molars. It's like they are forming glue in my mouth. UGH.

And they taste bad too. Hard to describe, but they taste like licking stamps. I think they are going in the trash. I've definately wasted some money figuring out what gluten free stuff is worth eating. I threw out some bread 2 days ago.

I did eat them with real 1% milk.

I love the Wholefoods 365 Rice crackers, especially the seaweed ones!

I have a gluten free list from the new WF store that opened last week in Birmingham, Alabama and it does list 365 crispy rice cereal on their gluten-free list.

It's gluten free. My dad just started eating them for breakfast. He likes them. I haven't tried them yet. I think he does add bananas and perhaps sugar with his cereal. And of course the milk.

Yes, I have concerns about the calcium supplementation as well. Sounds like a good idea on the surface if you are trying to address bone density issues but when overdone it can have the opposite effect. Calcium supplementation increases gut PH (i.e., lowers gut acidity) which can interfere with vitamin and mineral (including calcium itself) absorption. Often, bone demineralization is not due to lack of calcium intake but to low gut acidity. This is why you will often see calcium supplement products paired with vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Drinking OJ or tomato juice along with the calcium supplement can help with this as they are acidic juices. Calcium supplementation can also contribute to plaque arterial buildup I believe. I think it might be best to focus on rich natural sources of calcium.

In that case if you answer "no" does that mean the chef doesn't have to be as diligent?  If you ask for "pork free" do they ask if it is an allergy too? How's this for an answer: "I get violently sick if I eat wheat, barley or rye"?

I order my vitamins from Pipingrock.com. They also make Cream of Rice.  Clearly marked gluten free. Right next to the Cream of Wheat. Stoneyfield Whole Milk Yogurt will help repoputate your gut bacteria.  It has lactase so is ok for lactose intolerance. 6 ounces has 210 mg calcium. For magnesium I get the 10 ounce bottle of liquid Magnesium Citrate at the supermarket or drugstore ($3).  One or two ounces of it  in a glass of water.  Add ice and sugar if you like.  I like the Cherry or Grape best. Instead try: Cream of Rice, Cheese and Good Thins (rice crackers), scrambled eggs and gluten free toast. Do you need Calcium supplement?  Calcium from supplements can cause hypercalcemia, a condition that can lead to serious health complications.  Vitamin D increases calcium absorption.  Monitor 25)(OH)D vitamin D plasma and  parathyroid hormone (PTH).

The forms that vitamin and mineral supplements come in can be important. Bioavailability (i.e., how well they are absorbed) is often sacrificed for the sake of cost and shelf life. The vitamin or mineral you are targeting is always chemically combined with other elements to make them into a dispensable form (such as a powder, liquid or a pill) and to give them some chemical stability for shelf life.

Thank you so much! I will look for that.
