Period Problems

Last year I didn't have any periods because I had a high prolactin level. My doctor says I have a tumor on my pituitary gland and that needs to be shrunken also. So now I am taking bromocripten (spelling isn't right) and so last November I started having periods again. The first two weren't bad, didn't even have much PMS with it. Well, this last one which just started a day ago has basically taken over my life. I had major PMS problems this past week with a bad attitude, bloated feeling and all the usual. My period started yesterday and I took some Tylenol. I don't know what else to take, I have not found and PMS meds that are gluten free. Do you know of any? Anyway from 2 a.m. until about 10 a.m. this morning I was almost doubled over in pain, and I get this intestinal trauma. My bowels either go into overload or don't do anything at all, I was so constipated today, I almost fainted trying to push things through. Now I do eat some fruits and some veggies, I drink about 4 or 5 glasses of water a day and I take vitamins, I am also on some other meds, I do take Zelnorm to help with some of the intestinal problems. I try to stay away from too much sugar during the PMS time.

If anyone has any advice to help with the pain and intestinal trauma, I welcome any advice. Thanks for listening, I do appreciate it.

I've had horrible periods for years and years. Advil/ibuprofen is a better choice for period pain for a variety of reasons, one of which is that it's harder to OD on. Just make sure you eat something every time you take it.

Vitamin C, coffee, veggies are good for constipation. I just deal with the diarrhea because it feels better when my intestines are empty.

Take the ibuprofen as soon as you think it's going to hurt. If you can stop the pain before it starts it's easier to control. For me it takes 90 minutes to start working. I take 1 or 2 tablets, wait 90 minutes, then take 1 or 2 more if it still hurts.

Carla will recommend evening primrose oil, but she'll have to tell you more about it.

Right! Oil of Evening Primrose is an essential fatty acid that is good for PMS, and really for anyone. Here's one website I found. Open Original Shared Link

Also, magnesium and vitamin B6 are both good for cramping. In celiacs, we are often low in magnesium and B vitamins. Don't take just B6, take a B complex and if you feel you need more B6 then take more in a single supplement. The B vitamins work together so you don't want to single one out without being sure you have all of them.

Magnesium is also good for constipation.

The good news, I used to be doubled over in pain with it bringing tears to my eyes whenever I'd have a bm my first couple days of menstruation. Since going gluten-free, that has gone away completely. So, between the supplements and the gluten-free diet, you should feel better soon.

I just wanted to add, these supplements will need to be continued all month and it will take some time to see a change. They won't help with the immediate pain you are experiencing today.

Sure.  It could be.  Maybe get a pregnancy test and see?

This is a Celiac disease forum.  Do you have Celiac?  Perhaps you should see a doctor?

I second Evening Primrose Oil, but a good quality flaxseed oil is probably better.  If you are not taking some fish oils, start on these too. Not only will the EPO/flaxseed ease PMS symptoms but bowel motions are easier too, due to the oil effect.

Bowel issues during periods are really common.  Don't force it - personally I don't have one till day 4 of my period, but notice a clean out just before it starts. Forcing it would result in me nearly fainting from the pain due to my cervix being lower at this time.

Yes there is a possibility you could be pregnant.  You need to do a pregnancy test if you are concerned.

@CeliacPsycho246, You might try cutting out dairy.  Some of us react to Casein, the protein in dairy, the same as to gluten.

Yep, the edit window times out very quickly. It's okay. I got a good laugh out of it.
