Cramping - Any Advice

Hi Everyone,

Am having problems with cramping at the moment - much worse than usual. This particularly affects my feet, and sometimes calves. It is partly exercise related: particularly happens if I swim (did a short swim last night, got out of the pool and was cramping for about 1/2 an hour afterwards - feet turned into agonising lumps of concrete. But it also happens at other times: I turn over at night and my calves seize up. Or try to cross my legs and things also seize, or do a sudden movement (like tripping), or I turn my head quickly and my neck muscles cramp. My muscles have lots of tight spots / lumps (had a massage the other day and the masseur was shocked - was painful massage - but no doubt good for me..)...

Maybe related to hypothyroid? I'll try to get in to see my endo dr. (that will be in about 2 weeks)... but this is seriously cramping my style and comfort.... maybe have been getting glutened (my symptoms eating gluten are not always clear)..

Am eating heaps of bananas (2 a day) but doesn't seem to help. Anyone have any other remedies that work? That I can try?

Sally

If it is possible, get into a bath with water as hot as you can stand, not scalding though, it helps soothe the stomach.

Muscle cramps are a symptom of magnesium deficiency. Many celiacs have that deficiency because we don't properly absorb that mineral from our diets. Bananas are high in magnesium. However the severity of your symptoms suggests you need a higher dose magnesium supplement. Don't take magnesium oxide. It's not well absorbed and can cause lots of gas and/or diarrhea. Magnesium aspartate or magnesium taurate is often recommended to heart patients who have Mg deficiencies, because those forms of magnesium are very absorbable and don't cause diarrhea at high doses. Here's a link to an article about magnesium deficiency symptoms and treatment: Open Original Shared Link

@RMJ@Scott Adams@knitty kitty, Thank you for all of your responses, tips, and suggestions. I'm very grateful that this website exists. It makes me feel a lot less alone in my celiac journey!  The endocrinologist had me do a neck ultrasound just to be safe. Thankfully, thyroid and lymph nodes came back normal. knitty kitty, my Vitamin D is on the higher end of normal, but I will definitely consider the dentist route next time I have my checkup if I'm still noticing issues. Thank you! Scott, thanks for suggesting the ENT. I may consider seeing one if things don't resolve on their own. I am thankfully feeling a bit better now, so hopefully, this is just some sort of residual celiac inflammation like you mentioned, Scott. After all of the numerous tests and clinical visits I've had all year, I'm going to give my body (and wallet) a break for a few months to rest and heal without the stress of doctor appts/labwork and whatnot. Perhaps the health anxiety is also contributing to some of my symptoms.  Thank you once again for sharing your stories.

Using a pressure cooker will break down Lectins.  Long cooking times as in using a crock pot will also reduce Lectin content.   However, having tried both, going lectin free for a few weeks is like a vacation for my digestive system.  I do hope you give the AIP diet a try.  I understand that changing ones diet takes a lot of mental readjustment which is difficult, but it's really worth the effort for long-term health.   P.S.  Once your digestive tract is healed up, you should be able to add beans and rice back into your diet gradually.

Depending on which source you research sprouting or fermentation can reduce lectins. I sprout rice, buckwheat and quinoa. However, I admit that gas and intestinal inflammation still plague me after 5 1/2 mo gluten-free. I have been resisting but I may try the aip diet at some point.

Hi @jadeceoliacuk I am a UK based coeliac and I have used a private nutritionist a few times. She is very highly qualified and having just googled her details, she is listed on this website (see link).  For that reason, I think you could trust the listings here as I am quite sure she would not want to associate with this website unless it was a professional, trustworthy resource. https://www.nutritionist-resource.org.uk/ I hope this helps.
