Hello to all,

I have read around all of the forums and finally decided to drop in. I really think I may have celiac disease but I have been throwing around this idea for a couple of years now. So my story is that I have the atypical symptoms like bloating, gas, foul smelling @#@*, irratablility, headaches, fuzzy headed, joint pain, and the ability to loose and gain weight at the drop of a dime. I can even remember as a little girl having horrible tummy aches that would happen sometimes. I would get severe cramping all over my tummy(lower and upper) and I would be on the toilet for literaly an hour and my mom would have to bring wet rags to me, "Oh soo painful". I have had bad joints ever since highschool. My wrists ache so bad these days and if I sit for long periods of time, I tend to almost collapse upon standing from the weakness and pain in my hips. My Grandma (RIP) had problems from what I can remember and she had that skin rash dermitits H. My mon has had a polop removed and has som GI problems. So I am going to for sure go to the doctor and get the blood work done, but if that comes back positive I am simply going to try the gluten free diet after that to confirm celiac disease. Oh and I had been confirmed before with hyperthyroidism, and I took medication for that and got it under control. So every year I get my bloodwork done for that. I wanted to share my information with you in hopes that you can sympathize with symptoms and life situations that I have had and maybe tell me if you have experienced anything similar. I have also read about Candida, and I thought that some of my symptoms are similar to those as well....and then I saw that one of you mentioned Lyme Disease....what is that? I also read that one of you said that after consuming gluten your first initial symptom was dry mouth....me too....is that common? The pain I get is mostly my left side of my stomach and it feels like huge bubbles moving around and popping, then later gas will follow. I now am consious about how much wheat products I eat but before when I didn't think about I remember I have gone like seven days without going to the restroom, I was miserable, but when I would go it would be the opposite, D really bad. Any insight would be great.

Oh and does anyone know if your lady doctor, or like planned-parenthood run a celiac panel, because I do not really have a family physician or doctor to go to. How much does it cost to get the blood work done?

Thanks in advance for all of you that reply

P.S. I am sure my spelling is horrible, sorry.... ;)

Be sure you are still eating gluten until the testing is done.

You would need to go to a primary care doctor for the celiac panel, then a GI for a biopsy if you get one. Maybe there's a clinic near you that you could go to.

Lyme Disease is caused by a tick bite. It's symptoms are very similar to celiac's symptoms because both are systemic diseases. You can learn more at these websites Open Original Shared Link, Open Original Shared Link, Open Original Shared Link, and for testing www.igenex.com.

Welcome, and I hope you find some answers soon!

Welcome! This is a good place to ask questions and get support. My story isn't so similar, but I did have a lot of allergies and then joint pain that turned out to be lyme disease. That's under control but just discovered the gluten problem.

Your journey will be unique and so you uniquely contribute to this forum. At the same time many will relate to you and can offer ideas.

Well, that's interesting. I am lactose intolerant and have been managing that for years. I'd be interested in seeing if that changes once I feel better from not eating gluten (one thing at a time for now, though). Helpful to hear about the avenin. I will do some digging and pose that to the dietitian. Grateful for your feedback.

Recently my daughter ate in nandos harlow I rang in advance to speak about the celiac protocals and learned that childs portion chicken nandinos is cooked on the same grill as garlic bread even if they are celiac! Even if you clean it this is not good practise and will be making many children ill. I learnt adults butterfly chicken cooked on a grill purely for chicken.  This is fine and what we ordered however nandos need to take note of your practises for the safety of celiac children. my daughter has been ill from their nandinos chicken before and i emailed head office and they wouldnt accept responsibility

I agree with @RMJ, you have multiple positive tests so celiac disease is likely.  This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease.

One small study found that 50% of celiacs react to the dairy protein "casein" like they do to gluten. It is also common for celiacs to be lactose (the sugar in milk) intolerant, though that often disappears in time as the villi heal. About 10% of celiacs react to the oat protein "avenin" like they do gluten.

Thank you so much Trents (Scott?)! I have started working with a dietitian and did a deep research dive as soon as I got the diagnosis. I am aware of what you mentioned in the first two paragraphs, and was not aware of anything in the third, so I am grateful for that information, and will talk to the dietitian about that. I think I was most interested in the withdrawal process - it gives me hope that, although I have felt unwell recently, I just need to be patient (not a strong suit). I have printed the article you sent and will look at it more closely. Thanks again!
