I get really snippy when given gluten, then I feel bad for about a day afterwords because I snipped at a person who was innocent. That is on top of constipation and bloating.

Hello every one. Gluten and casein intolerance have ruined so many lives. My dad used to beat my mom... Couldn't help it. Ate food, got angry. I have forgiven him for it . My dad was diagnosed as schizophrenic...nope.. Gluten/casein intolerant. My brother diagnosed as bipolar......nope... Gluten/casein intolerant.. My sister... Angry.. Yells all the time... Gluten and casein intolerant... Me.... Anxiety/ depression.... Gluten/casein intolerant.

I had myself and my brother tested IgG from mymedlab.... My celiac test from blood was negative... But my IgG testing..wheat casien gluten and many more...

Please do no just go off of the first test...

Please go to the celiac Chicago research. 200 symptoms are related food intolerances.

Look up "brain allergies" if you have been diagnosed with any type of mental illness. Also look up functional medicine doctors... These doctors know all about gluten and food allergies..

Also, I found a a veterinarian that had mental issues and was gluten affected ... Www.dogtorj.com. So much great information..

I don't think a Veterinarian is a good source for human food intolerance issues.  Also, IMHO, I would not trust a medical diagnosis from a mail away lab, too many variables and you don't specifically state what all you tested for and what was negative or positive.  Allergies are different from Intolerances and so on.  Some psychiatric issues have nothing to do with food.  You may still want to pursue mental health care.

Good luck to you.

FYI. The veterinarian is gluten intolerant like you and I. His site is full of great informations for humans and animals. He has been gluten free since 2000. So he has 13 more years of experience in dealing with this. :). Tere

Well, I am a Celiac, not gluten intolerant and I have over 25 years of "experience" regarding food issues and other AI Diseases.

I am glad you are benefiting from the gluten-free diet.

I  am not aware of any evidence that states we celiacs cannot eat the flesh and fat of animals who eat grains and soy--as this veterinarian claims.

I read this in one of this articles:

He questions:  " How hard is it to believe that the flesh-  and fat - of animals consuming gluten, soy and corn contain enough lectins to do us harm?"

Answer: It's hard to believe.

This thread is very interesting. Like so many coeliacs I thought my bad temper/anger was just part of my personality but realise that I have not always been like this at all and it is my celiac disease and other food intolerances that are playing a part. These intolerances make me very tired and very "down" and if anyone asks/tells me to do something I really can't be bothered doing then they get a mouthful.

I also now realise that although my celiac disease antibody level is down to "normal", this is not the full story and there is more to celiac disease than is commonly realised. Since going on the gluten-free diet I have become intolerant to all dairy, oats, eggs, soya, grapes, pears, ginger....never ending. My body appears to be a mass of inflammation - costant SI pain, sore arms which leads to frequent headaches and migraines.

But it is the depressive symptoms that I truly detest and the anger/short temper that comes with it. Now seeing a specialist who hopefully will guide me through a healing diet.

I am starting to think I have a gluten intolerance.  I have a rash on arms, chest, and back and now this anger thing.  Google searches bring me here.  Help.  Where do I start?  Aside from stopping gluten do I need labs run?  Had gallbladder out in June and really thought it would help the Gastro issues.

Here are the tests:

-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and (tTG) IgG
-Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and (DGP) IgG
-EMA IgA
-total serum IgA and IgG (control test)
-AGA IGA and AGA IgG - older and less reliable tests largely replace by the DGP tests
-endoscopic biopsy - make sure at least 6 samples are taken

You ou have to be consuming gluten daily for these tests to be accurrate (8 to 12 weeks).

(Source: NVSMOM -- ?)

i would suggest reading the DH (rash) section of the forum as there is a very specific way to biopsy the rash and it seems most Derms mess up.

Welcome to the forum and let us know how it goes!

Hi. Just wanted to say how much I love this site.  I used to think I was going crazy with the anxiety and irritability. Since going gluten free I have felt so much better although it does come back after I have been glutened. So good to know this is normal and it's not just me.

This past year- I've had a lot of anger/irritability issues. I'm so relieved at how stable my moods are since going gluten free.

Sorry you have these symptoms . I have been gluten free for 9 years and I have a ridiculous amount of anger and depression it really sucks.

Thanks for sharing. Seems like so many people say "I cut out gluten and I feel so much better" , as if that's the cure all. I have celiac and a list of other medical conditions I battle with every day. I have cut out gluten and boy I'm angry, anxious, depressed, and some more ish. I definitely believe many of the conditions I have are related. Gluten lights a fire that spreads through my system from head to tow. I am fighting for my own health and my desire to enjoy living again every day! One foot in front of the other. All I know is laughter is my go to medicine. It's free, I don't need a prescription, I don't have to remember to refill or pick it up, and it's always with me.

Anyone else have varying levels of gluten reactions? I know when I've been seriously glutened. I practically pass out, vomit, diarrhea, etc. When I touch gluten, my hands break open and bleed. But sometimes I just have a nasty temper, which is not like me, with no other signs of gluten. Everything and everyone makes me really mad. Little issues really make me mad. No patience for anyone or anything. It'll take me a few days of this before I realize that I think I've been glutened, but I don't know where or how. I assume this anger issue is gluten related because I lose my patience, have depression issues, skin feels I need to crawl out of it to feel better from a bad glutening. I'm not angry all the time. Normally I am happy and laugh a lot. But when I get this no patience anger thing I can barely laugh.

Anyone else feel like this? Or is it just me?

Yes Yes Yes, I do feel like that to and my head feels like it is being squeezed , i cant spell, I hurt every where ,starts in my upper arms. I'm like all doped up staggering. people don't understand. I don't drink either. Its a gluten rage is what my husband calls it.. it is not good. makes it hard to live with your self

I am really happy to find this thread, you guys have no idea. I love wheat. I think I am addicted to it. I must have some at every meal. I really ingest a huge amount in a day. I always feels this burning sensation over my shoulders going down my pectorals and my arms after i ingest some wheat product. In the morning i feel always exhausted, especially my legs.

When it comes to my moods, oh my!! I am constantly angry and irritable over the least of things. But I am chill person by nature. I love to think and read.

i have been suspecting wheat for so long but never have to gut to stop it or even to read about it.

When it comes joint pain, bagels hurt my lower back, at least this i know for sure.

Thank you

Please consider getting tested for celiac disease before trying the gluten-free diet.  The blood tests are listed above.  It can be so hard to do a gluten challenge once you have gone gluten free.  Plus, with a diagnosis, you can get better family and medical support.  I wish you well.

My daughter went off gluten a month ago and her sadness and irritability and aggression disappeared. She isn’t ceoliac, according to blood tests,  but she tested extremely high for glutamate  ( through a neurotransmitter test). Shocked at the difference in her mood - they are much more normal now.

Wow!  Great news.  Celiac disease or Non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity can really impact your mental health, that is for sure.

Well I'm so glad I've just read this.... out of the blue I begin criticising and picking at the things my kids are doing wrong. Everything seems like a massive issue and I feel like everyone in the house is being confrontational.

I get so mad that I end up either swearing (which I never swear) or I break something.....It just feels like rage which I cant stop. I feel bad for my family as they do not deserve this behaviour.....  We work hard at eating a total gluten free diet and I don't do cheat days. Sometimes I risk eating out but never eat any wheat based food at all. However sometimes I risk a bag of chips. As I said this is very out of character for me... along with this I am still in denial that I truly have an issue with Gluten.  The family disagree with my thoughts totally on this. So in answer to your question.

I feel the same as you. And I'm sorry that others have this nasty horrible thing to deal with.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the gluten made me quite grumpy. Now I'm grumpy because I want some twizzlers.

I was pleased to learn recently that See's Candies has black and red licorice.  Not Twizzlers, but could do as a substitute?  https://www.sees.com/more-treats   See's chocolates are the best.  Everything on their website is gluten-free unless otherwise noted (rare 3rd party item).  You can even make a custom box of your favorites.  I love See's! I'm very happy to find this site, and see this topic discussed.  I was diagnosed last fall by blood test.  I had an endoscopy for stomach pain which showed gastritis, but was told I was not put deep enough to look at the small intestine. At my request the doctor took a blood test and it came back Celiac. The lab also suggested some other tests, but my doctor said I didn't need them. I'm not sure she really understands the disease.  I have noticed since I've been on the diet my thinking is much clearer, and I have fewer IBS symptoms.  Less abdominal cramping. I also have more energy, motivation and looking forward to doing things.  But I do express my anger and irritation more than I did before starting the diet.  I think the gluten-free diet is allowing me to express anger instead of repressing it and getting depressed.  So while it might not be pleasant for my husband it is better for me!  But the anger I have at things that happened maybe years ago will raise it's ugly head.

My symptoms don't sound as severe as yours. I would normally get diarrhea and my gut prutudes, not obscenely but enough where it is annoying... My symptoms are more neurological as I discussed earlier.

As far as medicines and herbs. I take a Centrum multivitamin, cod liver oil, borage oil maybe once or twice a week. I heard multivitamins can have gluten. I am only new to this Celiac disease for the past month. I am on anti-dpressants, Celexa, but I notice they dont work after I eat gluten, so I am thinking of tapering off the next month or two. I have been on ADs for two rounds before, and they are not a permanent cure. I don't everything can be totally normal, that is just part of life. Do you taken any drugs, supplements, vitamins???

I am thinking of getting Enterolab to confirm my suspicions as I heard bloods tests are hit or miss. My thyroid came back normal. I have been trying to take things into my own hands after continually be misdiagnosed.

I see your gall bladder was taken out, I see a lot of people with Celiac have that happen. My mother in law had hers taken out, so I wonder if she has it too.

Hi

You should definitely get a blood test and endoscopy to determine if you have celiac. If you do, and you are eating gluten then that could definitely explain both you depression and why your anti depressant medication isn't working. Most hormones, including serotonin and dopamine both of which are typically responsible for depression, are regulated buy the intestines so if your intestines are damaged from eating gluten then your serotonin and dopamine levels will most certainly be affected.

/Meg

It will not undo all of the healing.  If it did, diagnosis of celiac disease would be much easier!  To have enough damage to see on an endoscopy requires several weeks of gluten ingestion.

HI, I am new to this and am still in 'repair' mode, which I know will take time. But I'm wondering if anyone knows what happens if you ingest gluten after you have made a lot of progress in repairing your villi. Does anyone know if you just have a short-term issue? Or does an accidental ingestion of gluten derail all the work you've done and set you back to square one? Thanks.

Hydrolyzed wheat is wheat protein that has been broken down into smaller components through a chemical or enzymatic process called hydrolysis. This ingredient can be found in various products, including cosmetics, personal care items, and some food products. For people with celiac disease, hydrolyzed wheat is generally not safe to consume because it still contains gluten proteins, even in its broken-down form. Though hydrolysis reduces the size of these proteins, it doesn’t fully remove the components that trigger an autoimmune response in people with celiac disease. In food products, hydrolyzed wheat protein still poses a risk and should be avoided. With regard to the McDonald's French fries, the total amount of hydrolyzed wheat in the flavoring is small, and the amount that ends up in an order of fries is even smaller, and likely below 20ppm. McDonald’s states that the fries are gluten-free by ingredient and free from cross-contact with gluten-containing foods in their dedicated fryers. Third-party tests and statements by McDonald's confirm gluten levels are below the FDA threshold for gluten-free labeling (20 parts per million or less). So, while McDonald’s USA fries may be gluten-free based on testing, some people with celiac disease still approach them cautiously due to the past concerns and individual sensitivities.

Here is an excerpt from this article: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC82695:   Studies have shown that various peptidases of fungal, plant, animal, or bacterial origin are able to hydrolyze gluten into harmless peptides. According to SDS‐PAGE pattern, proteolytic enzymes hydrolyze gliadins (Heredia‐Sandoval et al., 2016; Scherf et al., 2018; Socha et al., 2019; Wei et al., 2018, 2020). Bacterial peptidase (Krishnareddy & Green, 2017), fungal peptidase (Koning et al., 2005), and prolyl endopeptidases (PEPs) (Amador et al., 2019; Janssen et al., 2015; Kerpes et al., 2016; Mamo & Assefa, 2018) thoroughly degrade gliadin fractions to decrease gluten concentration and influence celiac disease. Aspergillus niger derived PEP (AN‐PEP) were assessed in clinical cases for their impact on modifying immune responses to gluten in celiac patients (Lähdeaho et al., 2014). Guerdrum and Bamforth (2012) reported that PEP addition in brewing technology decreased the prolamin and all of the identified immunopathogenic gluten epitopes in beer production (Akeroyd et al., 2016). On the contrary, many of the recent investigations which employed enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), mass spectrometry, and Western blot analysis reported that PEP did not thoroughly destroy the whole gluten proteins (Allred et al., 2017; Colgrave et al., 2017; Fiedler et al., 2018; Panda et al., 2015), which indicates that beers treated with PEP are not safe for celiac disease patients. Anecdotally, this excerpt supports what we hear from the celiac community on this forum with regard to "gluten free" hydrolyzed wheat products and that is that some still react to them while many don't.

There aren't good studies that have been done on celiac disease remission, and I'm going from a distant memory of an older post here, but the longest remission that Dr. Stefano Guandalini from the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center has witnessed was ~10 years, then the symptoms of celiac disease and the damage came back. The real issue though, is that you still could increase your risk of various related diseases and disorders by eating gluten, but again, celiac disease remission has not been studies enough to know what health risks you might face.
