Hi everyone. Thanks to all of you who posted kind notes about my aunt's passing. I actually had a good time in N. Carolina and the funeral was very nice. I got to see all the relatives and relatives of relatives. My cousin and I stayed up late talking and laughing and I was glad that I could be there for her. My uncle was also really happy that I came.

Food-wise, it was tough. I didn't really overeat, because there wasn't a lot of stuff I could have and not much time for grocery shopping. I made a mistake by eating some ham (I don't usually eat pork) and got really sick. Then I found out that "Honey Baked Ham" is NOT gluten free. So I'm pretty sure I lost weight since I spent 24 hours running to bathroom constantly and trying to not make it obvious.

Today I don't feel like eating much of anything, but I'm taking the kids to the fair this afternoon and we will probably make gluten-free scones afterward so we don't feel like we missed out too much. Then I'll get back on track tomorrow.

little d Enthusiast

Liz I am glad that you are back safely, I'm glad that you had a great time and sorry that you did not whith the Ham.

Ok so here is my meals since yesterday

Up at 2pm

coffee

D- gluten-free van waffles

milk

Working friday ate at 12am

amy's gluten-free mac and cheese with tuna (I added the tuna)

ddp

shelled sunflower seeds

Ok I have a question, does tuna have gluten in it. I am really tired right now but I think that it is because I'm just tired, I'm not feeling too bad not brain fogged or anything like that, I usually do get really tired my second night in a row working though. I am off for the next 2 nights so I have plenty of time to rest and catch up of sleep at night. And we have been really busy at work, with being short staffed and too many babies being delivered, 20 babies alone were born yesterday, and in the nursery last night we were hopping with the spitty, projectile poop babies and plain just fussy babies. I even had a silent spitty baby that wanted to turn blue on me and a nurse from the floor who wanted to freak out and did not know what to do it was really kind of commical, I was calm getting stuff out of babies mouth and the nurse was running around trying to figure out what she needed to do to help me, it was really funny, I later asked her if she is better at adults coming from a med surg floor with adults who go south at any moment and she said that she could handle that situation, babies it is harder there is a lot more to remember. Anyway now that I got off the subject, I hope that ya'll have a great weekend.

I later asked her if she is better at adults coming from a med surg floor with adults who go south at any moment

I just had to laugh at this. I say "go south" to mean anything from something going rotten in the refrigerator to someone dying. My cousin in N. Carolina had never heard the expression before and when I said it (referring to something in her fridge) she burst out laughing and wasn't sure if she should be offended or not. She is very aware of being from the south and thought it might be a slam. I laughed, because I hadn't thought of it that way.

UR Groovy Explorer
I say "go south" to mean anything from something going rotten in the refrigerator to someone dying.

Speaking of going South ... I noticed a couple weeks ago that my 40 year old tush was rapidly joining my thighs - there has become almost no noticable difference between my butt cheeks and my hamstrings - I can't even really see my hamstrings. I gained 4 lbs. with my last failed attempt to quit smoking. And, so, that brings me to my next point:

No matter ... I'm back in the game. I've done 1/2 hour of CARDIO 6 days of the last 11. I've been eating a ton of veggies (mostly steamed), lean protein, and fruits and nuts too (I've always hated nuts) - no bad dressings, cheese, mayo. I'm excited. I've already dropped 1 inch on my waist and 2 lbs. on the scale, which puts me at 160. My energy level continues to get higher. I'm going to Oahu next month, so I want to be able to enjoy my trip and be able to be active.

I've decided to come back to this thread because of my renewal of willpower and determination. I wanted to give it a week before I came back because I have a tendency to make all these elaborate plans and then fall off the wagon. Haven't been keeping up much, so I don't know where everyone is, but I'm going to read back a bit and find out about y'all. Hope everyone is doing great.

Take care,

k

Aligray Apprentice

Hey guys! I didnt read thru all 19 pgs  but i get the gist of this thread ;)

What a fabulous idea to have a support group! I have lost 31 lbs since January and have 105 left to lose but i am doing well. This is the most i have ever lost at one time and the longest i have ever kept it off w/o gaining any back!

I pretty much have the diet down and eat well. I am no longer compulsively overeating which was a major problem. Im not bloated anymore bc i am now gluten free.

My major problem is cokes! That is why the weight has not flown off of me. Oh! and maybe bc i havent been exercising ;) just maybe ;)

Good luck to all of u!

-Ali :)

I read through the thread before jumping in. I'm new to this site and the time I've spent here the past few hours has been very informative. I don't know that I'm ready to "commit" to being a regular but I would like to follow this conversation for awhile. I hope that's okay.

I do have weight loss goals. Been a "big boned gal" all my life. Managed a "reasonable" size for the many years I was a semi-pro softball player and PE teacher. I turn 50 in a few days and REALLY have to get my weight under control now. I have been fascinated on this website to learn about the many challenges I've had but never connected to being celiac.

You can see some of my bio in the signature below. I'm what is known as a "celiac lifer"; that is I was diagnosed when I was 2 years old. I don't come across many other folks with that kind of history. We sure never had any resources like this website for the majority of my life.

thanks for the help and letting me just check this out for a bit,

Barb

KathleenAUS Newbie

Hi everybody,

I'm a bit late in posting but I did weigh myself on Friday and in two weeks I have lost about 2.5kgs (about 5 pounds I think). I've been very disciplined; walking every morning for about an hour, and I'm very pleased that the weight is beginning to come off.. I have another 9.5kgs to go... I'm being very optimistic and hoping it'll be gone by Christmas (so I can put it all back on I guess!)

Good luck to all of you..

Kathleen :)

little d Enthusiast

Hi all

I weighed myself tonight and I am still at 152lbs but after eating what I have this weekend not to bad I guess. On top of what I ate the Thia kitchen spring noodles I also had what I think is some kind of pot roast here in the cafeteria, it was very chewy so my jaws got a workout. I need to make more of an effort to eat better. I am down to just one cup of coffee instead of 2 one at home and then another at work. Coffee is getting to a point that is bothering my stomach some I don't know if it is because of the creamer that I am using, or not I usually go for the Coffee Mate creamers they are gluten free. My goal is to lose 40lbs I have already lost 8-10lbs. I started at 160lbs for a 4'11" frame that is too much. I wanna look hot for my husband. He has 80lbs to lose hes at 285lbs and 5'10 1/2 tall he had lost weight but he can't keep his hands out of the icecream long enough.

Happy eating

Okay, once again trying to get back on track. I got in a good workout yesterday, but blew it by baking cookies and eating a few too many. Now that the stress of school starting, my aunt dying and taking a trip to NC and all is over, I should be able to settle down into a routine with eating and working out.

I'll edit this later to add what I've eaten.

Okay, here is my edit:

B - spoonful of almond butter, small handful of raisins

L - Panini sandwich made with 2 small slices tapioca bread, 2 slices turkey bacon, Tbs romano cheese, Tbs pizza sauce and about 1 Tbs crushed pineapple - YUM! And a large handful of carrot sticks, small apple

S - (Here's where it fell apart) About 8 pineapple raisin cookies - big oops

later: 2 more cookies and about 25 mini chocolate chips

D - will be Mexican casserole with ground turkey, rice and tomato sauce, olives, salad with Italian dressing

Joni63 Collaborator

Ok, so I haven't been doing that great either. I think the weather being a little cooler has made me want to go into hybernate mode - eat and sleep! I've done well with exercise, but I am just hungry all the time right now.

Today:

B: Rice puff cereal (doesn't fill me up at all), soy milk, banana

S: Tostitos and nacho cheese dip, 2 pieces of turkey breast and a slice of cheese

L: Thai onion soup

S: 5 Walmart brand mini peanut butter cups, 5 rice crackers and cream cheese

D: Lasagna

S: More tostitos and cheese dip

Notes to self: Need more fruit tomorrow and less tostitos, dip and chocolate!

Hello Ladies and Gents

Amy's gluten-free brown rice and black eye pea dinner

shelled sunflower seeds

red grapes

orange

I am off tonight and have not figured out what I am going to make for dinner

My exercise for today

Leaving the parking garage, going to the doors of the hospital realizeing that I left my work badge in the Truck running back to my truck, retrieving my badge so I can clock in and running back downstairs and running through the halls having people look at me crazy. Because when people run in the hospital of course people think that it is an emergancy. Well in my case it was because I could have clocked in late, so that is my exercise for today. and ever since then have not stopped it has just been crazy busy, with a baby that needed extra attention right off the bat.

donna

Joni63 Collaborator

LOL about the exercise Donna! :)

Mango04 Enthusiast

Yesterday:

B - pine nuts and a pear

L - (lots of) brown rice with lentils

D - few bites of chicken, red leaf lettuce, avocado, red onion, Parma, olive oil, acv

Today:

B - I have rice crackers with peanut butter and some rasins

L - Same salad as last night but with some added almonds and pecan pieces

I pulled a muscle in my leg while running over the weekend, so it turns out my workouts these days involve limping around. Bummer. Hope you all are having a good week so far. :)

little d Enthusiast
LOL about the exercise Donna! :)

As far as I had to run to get clocked in I would call that exercise.

Mango04

I know all about limping around, with a broken foot that took 3 1/2 months to heel and I still have something going on there, with swelling and all.

Ok so last night we had to leave the house for a few hours so some people can come and look at it because we are in the process of selling. so I could not make dinner so Hannah my daughter wanted to go to Black Eyed Pea for dinner, my fav resturant of all time. I ordered a baked potato can't go wrong there right, In my case wrong when the cornbread and rolls came the rolls I just absolutly love have not had one in some time, I could not resist really I couldnt with the butter staring my in the face and the rolls I ate two of them I know that this was a mistake, so I also ordered the Broccoli and cheese soup, ate that I figured I might as well eat it and I did, Im sure it had wheat in it, I know that the rolls do. I really wanted the chicken fried steak, heck I should have if I'm gonna mess up I might as well enjoy it, but after discovering between my husband and I we only had $25 I thought that he went to the bank. So I didn't, After I ate I felt ok but I was tired from only getting a few hours of sleep, but today I am feeling it I did not want to wake up this morning, and I am having some fogginess, and not to motiviated as well. I am so unmotivated that it is 10:40am and I have not wanted to make my breakfest, or clean the house, I just want to mess around on the computer here at the library I stopped after taking my daughter to school, and taking the car to get a part on, which only took 10 minutes for the repair guy to do. And as you can tell I am getting off the subject of my accountability of my diet, I so need an offical diagnoses.

Ok so here is what I ate yesterday on Tuesday

up at 2pm

coffee

D- 2 rolls from BEP

broccolli and cheese soup

backed potato

(I know I just posted this)

Today

B - Coffee

will be gluten-free Van Waffles

Milk

D - will be

baked pork chops

mashed potatos

green beans

DDp

Working tonight my meal will probley be left overs, I have not decided yet, but it will have to be totally gluten-free so I can function tonight at work.

I didn't do so well yesterday :( . It's been a hard few days. A teacher at my school just found out she has cancer and it's so far advanced that they probably won't even try to treat it. We are all in shock and very sad. Another teacher's mom has cancer and is in the hospital not doing well. And my mom finally got home from her cruise and I called her and told her all about my aunt's funeral that she had missed and she's very sad. (I had called her to tell her the news, but this was the first time she really had to face it.) Anyway, so I'm a little down with all of this and yesterday ate whatever I wanted - no gluten of course, but still way too much and too many treats.

Ratroot Newbie

Okay, I think I just posted my message in the wrong place. I meant to post it here, but I think I just started a new topic.

Hi! I just found this board, believe it or not. I started reading the begining threads of this blog, or whatever it would be called, (I'm not familar with all the internet terms.) and I learned some incredible news. I have been diagnosed with celiac for about 10 years now. Once I started eating gluten free, I felt better but the weight just stuck to me. I couldn't get it to budge. I emailed a Doctor and told him of my situation. He was also celiac and told me that he had other patients like me, who were overweight, pcos, and hypothyroid. He told me that his patients who had celiac and thyroid problems are unable to lose weight and would never be able to lose weight. When I read his response I was mortified that I would never be able to lose weight. I became a little irritated with him and challenged him by saying, "Come hell or high water...I will lose this weight!" Well 10 years have passed and I'm still overweight. It has taken me over two years just to lose 50 lbs. Now, I know that's a good thing...but over 2 years...I should have lost it all in that time. I see now that what I've been doing wrong is over-eating rice, corn and potatoes. Why I didn't think of it before is amazing to me. I guess I just couldn't figure it out because I had been eating so healthy. I didn't eat much candy, chips, ice cream and seldom any gluten-free baked goods. However, I ate a ton of rice, corn and potatoes. Rice at almost every meal. I've even started and ultimately stopped exercise programs because I just could not lose my belly. I've started an exercise routine again this summer and I will begin this low carb diet. I hope its okay to join your group. I would love to be kept accountable. I really want to lose this weight. I'm turning 40 next month and I would love to have a better body than I had in my 20's.

I'm so glad that I found this. It opened my eyes!

Thanks,

Ratroot

Hello all,

I've done terrible lately. Good with exercise but craving chocolates and sweets. I'm determined to get back on track today because I still have some lbs. to lose. I think I've hit the 'poor me' depression part of being celiac. It's only been about 7 weeks and I did real good at first, but have felt kind of down lately and more tired than normal.

Hopefully today is the start of feeling better...

Sounds like everyone is doing pretty well with their diets. Even though we all get off track once in a while it's nice to come here, admit it and get back on track.

little d - I agree you had quite a workout when you forgot your badge. It was funny how you described it.

Good luck to everyone this week!

@Manaan2,  I'm so happy to hear you're going to try thiamine and magnesium!  Do let us know the results!   You may want to add a B 50 Complex with two meals of the day to help boost absorption.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins which are all water soluble.   When supplementing magnesium, make sure to get sufficient calcium.  Calcium and magnesium need to be kept in balance.  If you choose a calcium supplement, take two hours apart from magnesium as they compete for absorption.  Take Calcium with Vitamin D.  Vitamin D helps calm the immune system.   For pain, I use a combination of thiamine, B12 Cobalamine, and Pyridoxine B6.  These three vitamins together have analgesic effects.  My preferred brand is "GSG 12X Takeda ALINAMIN EX Plus Vitamin B1 B6 B12 Health Supplementary from Japan 120 Tablets".  Alinamin is another form of thiamine.  It really is excellent at relieving my back pain from crushed vertebrae without side effects and no grogginess.   Look into the low histamine version of the Autoimmune Protocol Duet (Dr. Sarah Ballentyne, a Celiac herself, developed it.)  It really helps heal the intestines, too.  It's like a vacation for the digestive system.  Add foods back gradually over several weeks after feeling better.   I'm so happy to have pointed the way on your journey!  Let us know how the journey progresses! P. S. Add a Potassium supplement, too.  Potassium is another electrolyte, like magnessium, that we need.
    • Manaan2
@knitty kitty I can't thank you enough!  My husband and I already started looking into those supplements.  We definitely plan to give it a try.  We've been against the Miralax since it was originally advised by PCP, but because of the level of pain she experienced on a daily basis, we decided to try it.  We've made many attempts to gradually decrease but due to her pain and related symptoms, we've kept her on it while trying all sorts of other dietary adjustments pre and post diagnosis specific to food; so far none of those efforts have made a significant difference.  I will definitely share how she's doing along the way!

Hi, I have recently embarked on the gluten-free journey. I have what to me seems like a somewhat confusing set of test results and symptoms. I have been impressed by the accumulated knowledge and thoughtfulness as I browse this forum, so I figured I'd make a post to see if anyone can offer any insight. I know there are many posts like this from new users, so I have tried to do my baseline research first and not ask super obvious questions.  I'm 43, overall very healthy. No history of gluten sensitivity or really any of the classic GI symptoms. About three years ago I started to experience intermittent bouts of fatigue, chills/cold intolerance, and shortness of breath/air hunger (sometimes feels like a hollowness in my chest, hard to describe). The symptoms over time have become fairly significant, though not debilitating, I am able to exercise regularly and am fairly physically active, continue to perform well at work. But for example I have gone from someone who consistently ran hot, was always cranking the a/c, to someone who wears a down vest inside at work in winter and get chills if the a/c even blows on me in summer. I get tired and lose energy even when getting decent amounts of sleep, and have to have my wife take over on long drives that I could previously handle with no problems. More generally when I am experiencing these symptoms they seem to crowd out space in my mind for focusing on my family, my hobbies/activities etc, I sort of withdraw into myself.   I happened to be experiencing these symptoms during an annual physical with my PCP a few years ago, he observed post nasal drip and suggested it was allergies and that I treat it with claritin. At first it seemed to respond to claritin (though not zyrtex), but over time I became unsatisfied with that answer. There didn't seem to be any seasonal rhyme or reason to my symptoms, and I felt like I was on an endless loop of taking claritin, then stopping, not being sure if it was even making a difference. I did eventually get allergy tests and found modest allergies to dust and pollen, which didn't feel like a smoking gun.  I then started seeing a natural medicine doctor who was much more willing to explore my symptoms via testing. The first thing that came back abnormal was elevated thyroid peroxidase antibodies/TPOs, 137 IU/mL vs a reference range of <9. At the same time my thyroid panel showed normal thyroid hormone levels. So it appears my immune system is attacking my thyroid even though it is working fine. I got a thyroid ultrasound at the time, it was clear, but with some abnormalities such that they suggested I get is scanned again in a year. These are certainly risk factors for a thyroid autoimmune disease, though my thyroid seems to be working fine for now.  From here my doctor considered celiac due to the murky thyroid/celiac links, so we did a panel. Results were as follows: TT IGA <1 U/ml, TT IGG <1 U/ml, deamidated gliadin IGA 24.6 U/ml, deamidated gliadin IGG <1 U/ml, IGAs 170 mg/dL. Readings greater than 15 considered high by my lab for the first four, my IGAs are within reference range. So basically just the deamidated IGA popped, but my IGAs are normal. I also notice on the tests that my thyroglobulin was high, 86.7 ng/ml vs a range of 2.8 - 40.9.  My doctor suggested that it certainly wasn't conclusive for celiac, but it was possible, and likely that I have some sort of gluten sensitivity. She suggested going gluten free and seeing how I felt as opposed to doing a biopsy. The best theory I can come up with is perhaps I am a silent celiac or just have a gluten sensitivity that doesn't produce immediate GI symptoms, but is still doing damage and over time has caused leaky gut. So now gluten is getting into my blood, and my immune system is attacking it but also mistakingly attacking my thyroid.  So that's what I did, went gluten free in October. It's been about four months, and I am really not feeling any difference. I still get the same symptoms that come and go. My bowel movements may be a bit more regular, but it was never a major issue before so I would consider that a minor improvement. I know that it can take a while to see improvements, and I am going to remain gluten-free and see how I feel. But I am definitely questioning whether I really understand what is going on, and am open to any thoughts or suggestions from the forum. Sometimes I wish I just went ahead with the biopsy before going gluten-free. While I would certainly be down to start drinking IPAs again ahead of a biopsy, you know, for science, I feel like at this point I would be throwing away four months of work and am better off staying the course and seeing what happens. But I'm really not sure.  I know there is a lot of thyroid knowledge on these boards, along with the celiac expertise, so I'm curious if this resonates with anyone's experience. And I'm interested in what sort of timelines people have experienced in terms of feeling improvements for some of these non-GI symptoms like chills, SOB, brain fog etc. Thanks in advance.

Does it taste like black licorice?  It said it was chewable.  I do not like that flavor.     Since the burn at the back of my throat is there everyday, I usually only take something when it is unbearable and keeping me from ADL especially sleep.

Your concerns about Nando's cross-contamination practices are valid and important for the celiac community. It's disappointing that Nando's does not have stricter protocols for children's portions, especially given the risk of cross-contact with gluten-containing items like garlic bread. Cooking gluten-free items on shared surfaces, even if cleaned, is not safe for individuals with celiac disease, as even trace amounts of gluten can cause harm. While the adult butterfly chicken may be a safer option, the inconsistency in practices for children's meals is concerning. It's frustrating that Nando's headquarters did not take responsibility, but sharing your experience raises awareness and may encourage them to improve their protocols. Consider reaching out to celiac advocacy organizations to amplify your concerns and push for better standards. Always double-check with staff and emphasize the importance of avoiding cross-contamination when dining out.
