A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread

Hi All, I hope you don't mind a newbie jumping in on your thread :D

In late October/early November I realized that I can't tolerate gluten. I have not had the official testing done with a gi because I can't bare to eat gluten any more to get the test done. But, I did have the blood tests done and they seemed to indicate that something was going on with me and gluten.

Anyway, unlike most of you I have a lot of weight to lose. About 150lbs. Not too happy about that but I have to try to do something positive about it asap. Since going gluten free I feel like a new woman and now I would like to look like one as well-lol!

I try to exercise a few times a week using Leslie Sansone's walking DVD's. I would like to add some strength training and belly dancing into my routine. As for food, not too certain how to approach that yet. Would love some suggestions if you have them.

Well, thanks for letting me join in, it was great to find this thread, and Happy New Year to all of you!!

Dolly

Hi Dolly and welcome

Feel free to post your meals and if you are brave enough you weight each week. I still have not been offically diagnosed be I do really well on the diet. Before I started I could not figure out why I could not lose my weight I had gotten up to 160lbs and I am only 4'11 and I am now down to 151 I gained over the holidays because I had not been sticking to my diet. But I am back on track so I will hopefully see some results. My weight goal is getting down too 120 I have a ways to go.

My advise to you is to, don't watch you calorie intake at first as long as you don't eat too many cals. Eat lots of fruit and veggies and fresh meats, stay away from the processed packaged foods let you body get used to the adjustment. After a couple of months then start to eat some of the packaged foods from Amy's line the have some great foods but be carefull of what you get because is not gluten free only a few of this line say that they are gluten free. But if you will be highly sensitive to wheat, the factory is not wheat free, nuts and soy milk. If you are a sandwich eater like me, its is fast and easy for me to make when I need to eat and run. I have tried differant gluten-free breads and have found thay only one Kroger grocery store in my area carries the Kinnkinnick bread line they are great thats good and not as hard as the other breads out there.

I have found that Walmart carries some gluten free items but you have to look for gluten free on the back of the packages. If you are ok with buying Wallmart brands then these are my usuall items that are gluten free: Value brand lunch meat, bacon, cheese (shredded and sanwhich cheese). Some Yoplait yogurt, and of cours any fresh meats. They did carry spegetti noddles but stopped.

I wish you luck Dolly on you new diet, here are my meals for the last few days

Friday (I work 3 nights a week Dolly so you will see me posting at odd hours)

up at 1:30pm

coffee

D- Amy's Rice Crust Pizza with Turkey, purple onion, bell pepper and cheese

DDP

Saturday

coffee

gluten-free raisen toast

Happy eating ladies :)

Thanks for the warm welcome!

You mentioned that Yoplait yogurt does come in some gluten free flavors-do you know which ones are gluten-free?

Thanks!!

Hi everyone,

I haven't been here for ages because I've been too embarrassed. I've gained 10 pounds since school started (day after Labor Day) and am right back to where I started last year at this time. Very frustrating since I worked so hard last spring and lost 13-14 pounds and then let it slip a bit over the summer. Aarrgghh.

I signed up for our community center "Biggest Loser" competition. I know I don't have enough weight to lose to win any prizes, but just having to weigh myself in front of someone else once a week is motivation enough to behave myself. I did my first weigh-in and got "before" pictures taken today. I'm really just hoping to lose 25 pounds in the 12 weeks that the contest runs.

I've been really busy with coaching basketball, but I'm going to try to get on here and post my food intake to help with the accountability.

B - 2 pieces chicken sausage

L - Salad with 2 oz turkey breast and about 1-1/2 Tbs Italian dressing, carrot sticks, satsuma orange

S - 2 Satsumas (a couple of hours apart)

D - Spaghetti: only about 1/2 C noodles (at the most) and a bunch of sauce made with ground turkey, salad with low cal raspberry vinaigrette

Hope you all are having a good 2008!

Jestgar Rising Star

Hi again all.

I'm with LoneWolf - I gained back the ten pounds I had lost but I have a new strategy.

Someone on a different thread said something that really struck a chord with me: "I finally feel good and I want to look good". And I though yeah, that's me. So since reading that I've been really careful with eating things I'm not very tolerant to, I'm more aware of my portions, and I don't eat breakfast until I get work, where I just have fruit.

I have started doing the warm up part of my exercise tapes in the morning, not for exercise, but to limber up, and I try to just move more frequently during the day. Still hoping to establish an exercise program, but for now I'll concentrate on making sure these current changes become habit.

Yah!!! Hi Liz, I was wondering where you have been, who cares if you have gained weight I think that most of us have gained something over the Holidays I know that I have, but for me it was not eating junk food I had been eating regular food packed with gluten because of parties and such. So because of eating all that crap I gained weight, I did not over eat on all the food or eat alot of candy and such. My body and I know this can't handle gluten, but I at the stuff anyway, but I am back on track with my gluten free diet I don't know if I had lost any weight. The last time I weighed myself I was back up to 151lbs, and I was so upset with myself. I go back to work on Thursday and I will see what I weigh. But I had been drinking alot of Diet Dr Peppers while at work and not drinking any water, so I know that, that contributed to some of my weight gain

My meals for the last couple of days

Sunday

B-Coffee

scrambled eggs with purple onion, bell pepper, cheese and gluten-free bacon

D- 2 chicken legs, mashed potatos, cole slaw (from Chicken express)

DDP

Monday

B- gluten-free raisen toast

milk

coffee Starbucks Carmel Mochiotto (I love this but I am sure its not good for me)

D- Hamburger with cheese, onion, baby pickells (I made the hamburgers myself)

DDP

Tuesday

B- gluten-free vann waffles with gluten-free syrup

milk

coffee

L- gluten-free sandwhich with turkey, alfalfa sprouts, avocado, cheese :P umm umm good

vitamin water strawberry kiwi

D- I loved the sandwhich so much and I had left over avacado that I had another sandwhich with the same things.

DDP

Wednesday

B- Coffee

gluten-free maple buckwheat flake cereal with milk

no idea for lunch and dinner

Happy eating ladies, off to go take my test for this week

donna

lonewolf Collaborator

Here I am two days in a row! Didn't get to work out today, but did teach 6 PE classes and coached basketball - not as much exercise as you might think, but definitely not sedentary.

B - 1 slice turkey bacon, small handful of raw almonds (20-25?)

S - Envirokidz cereal bar

L - about 2 oz deli turkey, carrot sticks, a few more almonds, satsuma

S - apple and satsuma

D - 1/2 turkey burger (patty only), 1 small turkey hotdog, about 1/2 C corn, 1/2 small potato, salad with no dressing, a few carrot sticks, satsuma

Hmmm - it really looks like I'm becoming addicted to satsuma's. Guess they're a good substitute for all the carbs and junk I ate over Christmas.

Donna - good for you to be so faithful to this thread - thanks for helping keep it going! Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get that weight off again.

Dolly - welcome! I hope you stick around and that we can help you out!

Hope to see more of you getting back into it and posting more regularly.

Hi Ladies,

I am kinda bummed because I have to go back to work tonight, with all the cry babies, and winers and I am not talking about the babies. Well I guess some of them anyway. I have been off for 7 days really did not do much except for study and clean house a little. We should know something about out sale of the house, we have been waiting on Countrywide to make a discision on the sale since this is a shourt sale, no reason why they won't deny the sale because the offer on the house is more than we owe, and with countrywide in hot water, you would think that it would help them out a little, but I know that they could still say no.

My meals since yesterday

B- coffee

Maple buckwheat flake cereral with milk

no lunch I was off taking my test which I passed but I have the option to take it again to get a higher grade.

D- gluten-free Spaggetti (thank goodness I had my daughter with me instead of my husband he likes the jar stuff and my daughter likes the way I make it :D:D )

I think 4 glasses of fresh tea, I won't have so many when it is not fresh, and I had a hard time sleeping because of the caffine.

Today

coffee

2 gluten-free raisen toast and milk

not a clue as to what is for lunch and I think that I will have left over spagetti for dinner at work tonight. And I will weigh myself to see if I had lost anything, I doubt it.

Happy eating everybody

Hi Everybody,

Good to see you here again, Liz.

Donna, thanks for continuing to post. You're doing great.

Joni, I'm soo going to get DDP for my PS2. Sounds so fun.

Hi Dolly,

Welcome to the thread. I know 150 is a lot.

EDIT: What I meant to say is 'I know 150 is a lot, but you can do it.

I have a sister who's about that much overweight at 5'4" (off topic my other sister is 6 ft and 155lb), and if I could offer her one piece of advice ( I really can't - we've had challenges to our relationship) it would be to clean out the fridge and the pantry. Just get rid of all the stuff with too many sugars, anything with trans-fats or too many saturated fats, skip the lo-cal options that include hydrogenated fats, anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup goes in the garbage. I'd say to her: Make it all go away & clean the fridge itself so it looks clean. Take a trip to the grocery store & replace that stuff with colorful, exciting fruits and vegetables so that when you look in your fridge, it looks "fresh". Include those oily fishes and chicken.

Ideally, we'd be eating mostly veggies, nuts, lean proteins & the like.

I lost 25 pounds in about 3 months (a few years ago) by walking every day (not a ton - just sticking to it - every day) and followinig the principles of "The Zone" - balancing out carb-protein-fats --> 40-30-30 % of daily calories coming from each (By Barry Sears), but sensible eating and some exercise will get the job done. When I did that, I did the clean-out of the fridge, the pantry, and also my closets. If I'm determined and I'm not looking at the goodies, I don't get so many cravings. It took a real change. I really had to change the way I looked at food. I began to see food as fuel rather than all the other things that food was used for before. It took perseverance.

Anyway, welcome.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I'm back. You can't say I didn't warn you :)

Ahhhhh ... the last of the dental work was completed yesterday. Goodbye to the stress, the pain and the money - oh well, I didn't really need that $3,000 anyway (above the $1,500 that my insurance covered). The garage has been half emptied. We got rid of an astounding amount of crap. Good riddin's. I can park my car in there.

Moving forward, I'm ready to hit the gym. I'm ready to clean out the fridge. I'm ready to shed these last 12 pounds and continue on into the coming year with a more healthy lifestyle.

I maintained my weight through the holidays (got glutened, of course too). However, I've lost all my tone & the cellulite on the reear end is becoming more prominent. My rear end kind of looks like 2 marshmallows stuck together. That can't be good. <_<

As it stands:

Weight: 160

Waistline: 35

Still smoking

2 MONTH GOAL:

Weight: 147 (that would be 13 pounds to lose)

Waistline: 30ish

Be a non-smoker

I'm really going to make the effort to post what I'm doing and how it's going. I'm really going to try to keep a food journal.

Come on, Ladies - Let's make a change ini our lives!

Come on, YEAH !

Hi Kat,

I love your enthusiasm. You've inspired me to "come clean" with my weight again. (I think I had it on here or maybe the other thread at one time.)

Weigh-in on 1/7: 175 lbs. Goal: 150 lbs by March 31, which is when the "Biggest Loser" competition ends at my community center. Beyond that, my goal is 142, which is what my driver's license said for a long time because I actually weighed that much for quite a while. At 5'7, 142 is a reasonable goal. I'll never be "skinny".

Jestgar Rising Star

sigh

ok, I am so not posting my weight. But I will say that my fantasy goal is to lose 40 lbs, reality goal is to lose 20. 10 of these I expect to be gone by the end of the month (stamping foot).

So for still sticking to the fruit for breakfast, random lunch, veggies with dinner plan. A little to soon to claim actualy weight loss, but I'm hoping to be down 1 pound by tomorrow's weigh in.

little d Enthusiast

I am guilty of something I say that I am going to excerise and walk the dog, I have not done anything.

My goals for 2008 are, with us moving hopefully at the end of January, the Apartment that we are moving into has a fitness area open 24 hours, and if we keep my dog then I will be forced to walk him. so I will be able to get into shape and be OCD about working out.

My other main goal is to loose 10 by Easter, another 15 by summer and look really hot for my birthday in October with a total weight loss of 30, which should put me at 120lbs I would like to be back at 110lbs but I know that would be really hard so I think that 120 is reasonable I looked great at that weight. I am not going to try for 95lbs because that is rediculess to get too, I had never been that except for the 5th grade and I know that is not optainable and I don't want to look anorexic.

So exercise, weight loss, so I can gain all back if we ever finally decide to have another baby, which should not be too much since with Hannah I only gained 12lbs.

No health goals is to finish school, and make decent money with Medical Transcription, to get a little more secure financally, keep my house/apartment clean, and keep my man happy B)

I hope that ya'll have a great day, I have to get off the computer so I can clean the bathrooms, my daughter does not know how to brush her teeth and not make a mess.

I did it!!! I am back on track with my weight, I am again 147 1/2lbs :D I was afraid that with being off for 7 days that I would not loss any weight.

I'm hungry, I did not eat before I came to work so I went and got some Celery and carrot sticks from the cafeteria, I was going to get sunflower seeds but the Celery and carrots caught my eye, and I also got Vitamin water fruit punch

So, it looks like I gained a couple pounds -

I guess that makes sense (considering my over-indulgences this week), so for my weigh-in, I'm not 160 like I thought yesterday.

Weight: 162

Bumping my goal up to 15 lbs. to lose now.

I'm going to concentrate on prepping meals and getting cardio in. Calories in / Calories out. It's as simple as that. I'm not really prepared to track my food today, but I'll let you guys know how the cardio goes.

Have good days

k

Go Chargers !

lonewolf Collaborator

Hang in there, Kat! I'm sure you'll drop those two pounds quickly.

I did well yesterday, but don't even remember what I ate. (I had a basketball game last night, so the day got hectic.) I got in an hour long workout - about 15 minutes of weights and the rest cardio. A good friend took me to a new gluten-free bakery nearby and I was really proud of myself. I ate 4 little bites of samples and then 1/4 of an apple cinnamon muffin for "dessert" for dinner. I bought a bunch of stuff for my kids, so it was really tempting, but I resisted pretty well.

I'm weighing in on Mondays to help keep me motivated for the weekend.

So far today:

B - about 2 oz turkey breast, 2 carrot sticks and 2 almonds (I was packing lunches)

L - about 2 oz turkey breast on 1 slice multi-grain bread (gluten-free, of course) with lettuce, carrot sticks and 45 cal. fruit snack bar.

D - will be 4 turkey meatballs cooked in barbecue sauce, 1/2 C rice and salad with lo-cal raspberry vinaigrette and probably a satsuma for dessert or a snack.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Joni63 Collaborator

Hey everybody,

Welcome Dolly! Glad you came to join us. Hopefully I can be more dedicated now and stick around and post my progress more. I'm anxous to go back and catch up on the thread. I did read back one page.

Jestgar, DDR is fun!!! It's especially great for those days when I can't get out and jog due to bad/cold weather. Plus, once in a while I will do it just for fun after I've exercised because the kids are playing and I join in!

Donna, you have really kept this thread going over the holidays. Thanks for continueing to post and being determined to keep the thead up! Thanks for that!

Kat, great going on the garage and getting things done around the house. I know how great it is to get things all cleaned up. We have so much to do but my husband and I are never both motivated at the same time. And he works 2 - 10pm which really hinders us making progress around the house. Anyway, I'm really glad you were able to get that all done!!

I've been eating pretty well and getting slowly back into the exercise patterns. I hope this week will be my first full week of exercise. Sleep problems have really messed things up for me and sometimes I'm so tired after the kids go to school, I just go back to sleep for a couple hours. That really messes up my exercise program.

Anyway, my aunt gave me a recipe for kale stir fry and it's delicious and so healthy. I thought I'd share it because even my kids are eating it. Oh and the dogs also begged for it so I let them try it and they loved it too.

Cut up carrots, onion, kale.

Add them one at a time to a pan full of olive oil. I do carrots, add a little sea salt, onions add a little sea salt, and kale add a liteel sea salt, some ginger and soy sauce. She told me that adding a tiny bit of sea salt after each veggie helps to keep the flavor in those veggies. She learned about it on a cooking show. It's really good, and I never had kale before.

Stir fry that for about 10 minutes so the veggies are still a bit crunchy. MMmmmmmmmm!!!!!

I'll be back in a bit to post my weight and food so far for today.

Joni63 Collaborator

Weight: 137

Goal: 125

Exercise for today:

1/2 hour ashtanga yoga and 1/2 hour jog outside

Food got out of hand but I'll post anyway:

B: 1/2 cup nutty rice cereal, ground flax, almond milk

S: Kale stir fry, mixed nuts

L: 2 turkey cheese tortillas, more kale stir fry

S: here is the waaaay out of hand part: 1 Hershey bar, more mixed nuts 1/2 cup potato au gratin, 2 jenny's macaroons, chips, crackers and cream cheese. I was starving today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

D:1/2 hamberger and kiwi

S: Banana

I really messed up this afternoon, Don't know why I was so hungry but I could not get satisfed. Bad, I know!

Hope you all are doing better than I am today! :D

Hi all. Hope you had a good weekend.

I weighed in for my biggest loser contest today and was excited to see that I weigh 171-1/2. Down 3-1/2 pounds since last week! I know that the first 5 pounds are the easiest, but it still is exciting to see something coming off, especially since I've been working hard at it.

Got in an hour long workout this morning and have eaten well. Not enough time to post it all.

Joni63 Collaborator

Yay on those 5 lbs. Liz. Way to go!

little d Enthusiast

Hi Ladies, Yeh!!! Liz on your weight loss.

I wanted to keep this thread going over the holidays because it is fun seeing what everybody else eats, and I get ideas on what my options are and try differant things, I tried and did not like Hemp tortillas, I only have had two out of the package that I got from Whole Foods thankfully I got to get these without paying, I asked the cashier if she had tried these and of course when you ask this question, they let you take them and they write it off, I don't know what it is about these that I don't like, but I don't like these, I'll stick to my brown rice tortillas.

Ok so over the weekend I made some poor choices with my food intake which I was hoping I would be ok with. But that was not the case, it is Tuseday and my stomach is still rumbling from my choices :(

Saturday

coffee

B- gluten-free toast with milk

L- This is where I started going wrong, we went to Red Lobster

Shrimp with garlic sauce and Broccoli, a bit of my husbands crab cake and the roll

Tea

I was ok so far

D- gluten-free brown rice tortilla with gluten-free cheese and garden herb sunshine patty

ddp

Sunday another possible wrong but I took a chance, because it sounded good

B- Oatmeal with 2 gluten-free toast

coffee

D- We ordered Chinese food

Shrimp with Lobster sauce and rice

Vitimin water Fruit punch

Ok so 30 minutes after eating I started having gas pain before I had to leave for work and this was not the time to get gas pain. Everything that I had eaten over the weekend I thought were good choices, so the possibilty to my episode is the Oatmeal which finally kicked in after the chinese food and the chinese food gave me the extra kick, I know that Red Lobster could be a culprit too.

Dinner at work was and bacon, cheese, bell pepper, onion Omlet. With the Cowboys loosing and having to visit the room I totally forgot about taking food with me, and I had to make a stop to my Mother-in-law because she watches my daughter for us while I work and my husband has to be at work so early in the morning, I basically had to run to the room when I got there and I was so affraid that I was going to be late, but I got there with 30 seconds to spare on the time clock.

My meals today have been

B- gluten-free Vann Waffles with milk

L- gluten-free avacodo, alfalfa sprout, cheese, ham, sandwhich

viamin water Fruit Punch

Dinner tonight will be

Chicken breast with mash potato, and green beans.

can't go wrong here.

Happy Eating Ladies

donna

Joni63 Collaborator

Sorry about your rumbly belly Donna. Hope you feel better soon.

Ok, today I've been much better, lol.

B: Nutty rice cereal, flax seed, and almond milk.

S: Mixed nuts

L: 15 Rice crackers with home made hummis and the rest of kale, carrot stir fry.

S: Kiwi

D: Shrimp scampi over angel hair pasta and peas

S: 5 rice crackers and hummis/yogurt

Exercise has also been good!

1/2 hour yoga

Played DDR and found out there is a workout mode. I 'played' for about 40 minutes and it said it was equivalent to jogging 5.272 miles. Wooooohooooo! Hard to believe, but it was quite a workout!

UR Groovy Explorer

Hi Ladies,

I think I'll have something to report when I weigh in on Friday. I've been doing great with the food. I'm actually going to post today. I'll update it later with the rest.

B: 8 oz. berry blend juice + 2 HB eggs

L: Chicken Breast + Veggies cooked - kale, red bells, eggplant, olive oil, etc

D: Will Be Pot Roast - potatoes, carrots, celery, etc. Changed my mind - dinner was a 1/4 lb ground beef patty with more cauliflower - the pot roast wasn't ready yet.

Snacks all day: Seeds & nuts & fruit EDIT: fruit was an orange + I had cauliflower + turmeric.

We'll see how it goes tonight.

Liz, good news on the lbs. That's awesome.

Hey Joni, do you know what kind of pad you're using with DDR? We can't figure out what kind would be best. It's cool they have a workout mode. Anyway, let me know if you have any input on the foot pad thingy.

I've got to get some serious exercise going here. I can feel that I'm not in great shape.

Okay, take care all

Hey Kat,

Good for you! Sounds like you had a really good day! :)

The pad is a Psyclone Universal Dance Pad and we also have the one that came with the original game. The original one is kind of flimsy and slippery, but the one I'm using now had a dull black surface and I don't slide around as much, lol. I know there are a lot of different pads out though and I don't know much about them. We bought ours at Best Buy, if that helps.

In the US you don't need a referal to see a specialist if you are self pay. PPO you can go directly to any specialist or doctor you prefer. HMO you’ll choose a primary doctor to manage all your care. Pricing of the insurance will vary, as will prescriptions coverage.
    • trents
Welcome to the forum, @lsky! In Canada I believe your healthcare system is totally socialized so I doubt if you have the option of making direct appointments with specialists. In the U.S. it is becoming more and more that way as most people here now are covered by some government managed healthcare network and almost all providers and specialists are part of those networks. Here and there you will find independent providers that take private pay only but it is the exception. Both in Canada and in the U.S. I believe there is a concerted effort to always keep the PCP in the loop.
    • lsky
I have had celiac disease since i was 7 and i've recently had worsening symptoms, I live in canada and the doctors right now are horrible so my general doctor never puts in my referrals or she does it wrong and i have to wait months-years for an answer. I was wondering I already have a Gastroenterologist, could i just contact him and ask to book an upcoming appointment? i'm not sure if it's different in canada or not.

Welcome to the forum @Juliana82! Bleeding where? Thanks for the articles on seronegative celiac disease. As I recall, one of our moderators is seronegative and has been faithful to draw our attention to this phenomenon at different times. The heterozygous factor seronegative celiac disease is an important factoid I believe.

With such a weak positive, his got may or may not be cleared in three months. My daughter when diagnosed at the age of seven had a TTG score of 388. It was 18 months on a gluten-free diet before her levels returned to normal. it seems to me that when you started something that allows your son to gain weight, as he clearly needs to do, you may want to keep doing it.  Sometimes you just need to figure out the science of it as you go along. Have you been tested?  That’s how I found out I had celiac disease, was after my daughter was diagnosed, and the recommendation given to me was that all of her first-degree relations should be tested as well. I came back with a weak positive when I was on a largely, though not entirely, gluten-free diet (cooking for my newly diagnosed child). good luck with everything.
