Hi everyone! Glad to see some new folks - welcome! I'm happy to see so much activity on the thread while I was gone. I tried to catch up on it all.

I had a great trip to N. Carolina. My aunt has cancer and we were expecting her to be very sick and in bed, but apparently she perked up a lot right before we got there and was able to sit up on the couch and visit with us quite a bit. We celebrated her 77th birthday and my mom's 79th birthday while we were there and made it quite a party. I hadn't seen my cousin since I was 13 and she was 14 and we had a lot of fun catching up. I stayed with her and we didn't make it to bed before 12:30 any night because we talked so much.

I ate a little too much on the trip, but at least got in a long walk every evening. I'm waiting until tomorrow to see how much damage I did. I'm trying to get back on track with my eating.

Thank you for the welcome back!

Did anyone else weigh in today? I gained a pound on my trip - no great shock to me. I wasn't good yesterday  , so I won't list what I ate. I wasn't too good today either, but at least a bit better.

True confessions:

B - 2 pieces gluten-free toast, 2 pieces turkey bacon, mustard (not as gross as it sounds), banana and grapes

L - baked beans with sliced up turkey hotdogs, more grapes, carrot sticks

D - Greek chicken salad (YUM!) and a tootsie pop to get the garlic smell off my breath. I'm hoping they are gluten-free, because I have some serious gas and I can't think of what else it could be. At least I'm not really sick. I rarely eat anything without fanatically reading the label, but my breath was so bad I was desperate and the lady at the restaurant had put them in the bag for us.

Maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought, but still too much.

Hope to see you all posting again soon!

Jestgar - walking from the ferry dock to work and eating tomatoes for breakfast counts as healthy. Don't abandon us!

lonewolf Collaborator

Yikes! Here I am posting twice in a row again. I guess it is the weekend and a lot of us aren't usually on here. It's pouring down rain, so I have nothing better to do right now.

B - a spoonful of almond butter and a small handful of raisins

L - a Greek chicken shish kabob with about 1/2 C of rice, some grapes and carrot sticks

S - an airplane bag of peanuts and a gluten-free cookie from the health food store (oops)

D - grilled chicken tenderloins smothered in garlic sauce, about 3/4 C rice, salad with Italian dressing

I didn't get "real" exercise today, but I worked at a car wash for 2-1/2 hours with my daughter and vacuumed and scrubbed out our "new" van (10 years old, but new to us).

Janeti Apprentice

Hello all, sorry I haven't posted in a while, I haven't been feeling the greatest. Being that I am also battling lymes, I now have intestinal candida....I have lost 4 pounds though. My new diet is no sugar, protein and fruit for breakfast, and Activia for lunch only, with maybe a piece of fruit for a snack of some carrot sticks. Eating sucks!! There is no joy in it any more. Liz, hope you had a great vacation!

Hi Folks,

I haven't been here lately because it's just too humiliating. I say I'm going to work out, but I don't. I have absolutely no self discipline.

New plan: Buy, clean, prep & cook more healthy foods - today. I've been cheesing all week. I'm going to get off the cheese. It's killin' my waistline.

Think I'll put one foot in front of the other and walk first, rather than creating all these lofty goals that I can talk myself out of.

I didn't weigh in this week. I'm quite sure that nothing has changed. Another week, another chance to change my ways.

jerseyangel Proficient

Ditto

Ok--I'm back....first I need to admit that I've gained almost 20 pounds since my hysterectomy in January. I feel like I should say--"hello, I'm Patti and I can't stop gaining weight." :( At first, I lost 10 pounds, but since then I've been stedily gaining.

I'm frustrated, and honestly, I don't think I'm eating badly at all. I eat entirely gluten-free, dairy free, soy and legume free and low sodium. I do tend to over do with sugar, and portions, I think are a problem, as is lack of regular exercise. I think I may have just answered my own question :P

I've been reading up on menopause, and it looks like this is not uncommon at all in my situation. (I take no HRT). I just had blood work and a cardiac workup--and all is well, they say.

So....be that as it may, I'm going to try and eat more intelligently and get regular exercise. I'm just so darn *hot* all the time. The last thing I want to do is induce sweat

Liz--welcome back and I'm glad that your aunt was feeling well enough to enjoy your visit. :) Geoff, sorry about all of the "female" talk--I just wanted to be clear about what I'm dealing with ;)

Sigh

I finished out my week of bad eating by stuffing my face with potato chips and sitting on my butt reading Harry Potter.

And then I spent two nights not sleeping because that's what my body does when I don't eat well.

So this morning, back in the saddle.

3/4 cup home made yogurt

3 tomatoes

2 bananas

3 cups coffee

more than usual, but I feel like crap from having just a few hours of sleep over the weekend.

B- 2 eggs, 3 bacon and hashbrown cheese cassarole from Cracker Barrell

2 cups of coffee, I did not have any bread but I'm sure the hashbrowns were not good for me.

D- CiCi's Pizza 4 small slices and salad (We were out and my husband stopped here without thinking and of course the salad was not enough I had to go for the pizza)

d coke

Sunday

B - gluten-free Corn Flakes with Lactaid milk

Potato Wedges with sourcream and bacon bits

d coke

Doing better today (we're both getting back on the horse, Jestgar :D ).

B-One slice toast w/almond butter, banana, spring water

L-Big salad w/olive oil and vinegar, square of cornbread, spring water

S-Cup of Stash Chai Tea w/sugar in the raw and vanilla almond milk

That's it so far today. Didn't exercise per se, but cleaned the house *and* my closet. Actually worked up a sweat :)

Hi Paula,

Almond butter is yummy :P I'm practically addicted to it!

It should have only almonds in it--I use Woodstock Farms. The (only) ingredient is roasted, unblanched almonds.

OK I'm back on track, and I will do my measurments by the next time I get on. Just by eating what little gluten the pizza, dohnuts, potato wedges, and hashbrown cassarole I gained 2 lbs and they were your regular portions nothing too big the pizza slices were small, and I did not eat between meals. I know that this food is not the greatest even for the average person high in cals and fat but 2lbs in just 2days that is alot I think.

Monday

L - Subway fixing chicken, onion, bell pepper, black olives, guaco, gluten-free cheese, gluten-free ranch dressing on a gluten-free English muffin :P umm love those english muffins

D DP

Tuesday working ate at 1:30 am

D- chicken, broccoli, Thai kithchen noodles

d DP

coffee @5am

My husband has already informed me that we are going to Olive Garden when I wake up so I'm sure that I will make a good safe choice in my meal :D

I wonder if I could find this here, I like Apple butter from Cracker Barrell but i don't think that it is gluten-free

donna,

The lbs are probably from water weight. It's almost impossible to actually gain 2 lbs of fat in such a short time. When I went gluten-free, I lost 8 lbs in a week - presumably water retention that I had been holding, because, as impossible as it is to gain 2 lbs of fat in 2 days, it's even more rediculous to think that I had actually lost 8 lbs of fat in a week ! I'd like to see you try totally gluten-free.

RE: My diet / exercise program:

I really am starting today. Last week, I injured my groin area and thought that exercising and exacerbating the problem was a bad idea (convenient excuse?).

However, this is healed now, and I'm going for a walk - right now. I cooked a bunch of healthy stuff like I said I was going to, and I'm ready to go.

Everyone, have a great day !

Well, my weekend involved lots Chebe pizza and some gluten-free brownies , but I'm finally starting up yoga again and I'm getting in some running/cardio and weight training. I'm trying to do some research on the connection between yoga, thyroid function and weight loss. It's pretty interesting.

Anywho, my eating plan for the day:

B - two hard boiled eggs and some blackberries

L - sunshine veggie burger patty with some black beans and avocado

S - two nori power wraps (sunflower seeds, seasame seeds, sun dried tomatoes, nutritional yeast etc. etc. wrapped in nori)

D - brown rice with lentils and veggies

Hope everyone has a happy day :)

Hi all. I think I did okay on Sunday, just can't remember what I ate. I do know that I went for a long walk with my daughters.

Donna - don't worry about your measurements. Everyone is doing what works best for them. You can post if you want to, if it helps you feel more accountable, but don't feel pressured. I still don't want to admit how much I weigh, much less give my measurements. I probably should at least give my weight though - maybe it would horrify me to see it in print and help me get back on track completely.

I'm working at a basketball camp all week as a coach. Yesterday I was on my feet from 8:30 - 3:00 at the camp, teaching and helping kids and refereed 5 short games. After that, our girls' team (I'll be the HS assistant coach next year) had practice until almost 5:00 and I played along with the girls for most of it. I definitely got my exercise in! I came home famished and ate everything in sight, which luckily wasn't more than fruit, carrot sticks, raisins, a couple pieces of gluten-free toast and a few rice cakes. Then we had spaghetti for dinner. But I think I burned off all the calories. Today I just coached at the camp for 6 hours and didn't have practice afterward.

Today:

B - medium sized apple with about 1-1/2 Tbs almond butter

L - about 2 oz deli turkey, carrot sticks, apple

S - a handful of almonds and 1/4 of a gluten-free Amy's pizza (so WHY was I eating something with dairy?) and a few grapes

D - will be grilled chicken and vegetables and salad

Hi, I'm Rachel. I was just wondering if anyone can offer me some advice? I'm a college student (yes, i think i gained more than the freshman 15 last year) and I have had a really hard time with my weight. I was diagnosed with celiac disease not because I was getting sick but because my sister was getting sick and it is hereditary. Well, it's been 3 years since I got diagnosed and my problem with losing weight is since I am not allowed to eat gluten, all I want to do is eat it! Even after these years of having it I have never gone even two whole days eating completely gluten-free and the last 2 years I have been getting sick basically every week. So, I will go all day without eating gluten and then it will get towards later at night and I am awake by myself and I will just RAID the kitchen and eat everything with gluten in it. Call me an emotional eater but I can't help but want to eat the foods that I love. Every diet says you shouldn't ignore the foods you love, so having Celiac Disease and trying to lose weight for me STINKS. It's really gross but I can't stop it. It's caused me to gain over 100 pounds in the last 3 years. GROSS! Any suggestions?

Hello Rachel,

I have 2 suggestions for you.

1st, to kill those late evening issues, drink a glass of water & eat some fruit maybe 5 minutes after the water (depending on if fruit is good with you). Wait a bit and see if you really still want to blow it.

2nd, try to 86 the gluten. You have a diagnosis. You're young, I'll assume (college student). You don't want all the things that go wrong in the body to cause greater problems later. It sucks to be older and have health problems. You want to be healthy when you're older. You probably don't really think about it much at this point - I know I didn't care when I was younger. I do now. I wish I had. You may not be sick now, but that doesn't mean that it won't affect you down the line.

Take care. Let us know how it's going.

In regards to my last post:

NUTS ! I forgot about the nuts. Nuts with fruit or vegetable at night (almonds?) will stave off the cravings.

This may not be the best advice you'll get, but, it works for me when I do it.

GeoffCJ Enthusiast

I've been working my ass off the last week or two, work work, not excercise. I did go kayaking for about 8 hours saturday. I feel like I've been eating VERY healthy, but haven't been sleeping and have gained a few pounds.

287.

Worst ever.

Damn.

Hi. Sorry you're struggling. What is your living situation like? Do you live with roommates? I'd say you would do best in an entirely gluten-free household, but I understand that might be difficult in college. What kind of food do you eat during the day? I'm guessing you don't eat a lot, and feel deprived and hungry by the time you go to bed at night. It's possible to still eat the foods you love on a gluten-free diet. You might just have to make them a bit differently.

I just read a little blurb in some magazine that explained that binge eating is much more common than people think. There must be some resources out there that could help you. Stick around here too, and hopefully we can help you with the gluten-free diet as well :)

I am asking for my six year old. It took us four months to figure out what was going on- a brand of extra virgin olive oil we were using for every meal. We changed the brand she instantly got better- from Gi to nephropathy to joint pain, to tinnitus to dry eyes. You name a symptom and she has it when glutened, so it's difficult to second guess when it's all so obvious. Anyway, two months later, i bought another bottle of the same brand, and the olive oil was sourced form 5 different countries, as opposed to one. It took exactly a month for her symptom to start all over again. And sure enough it was the oil! I am sorta getting tired of trying to get these "healthy" oils glutening her. Does anyone have any thought on cooking oils that they think for sure are not contaminated, or any certified glutenfee brands they suggest? I'd appreciate. At this point, I just need any oil that's free of contamination- healthy or otherwise. Healthier is better. But i'll tkae anything. Thanks

@CeliacPsycho246, You might try cutting out dairy.  Some of us react to Casein, the protein in dairy, the same as to gluten.
