I have heard that MSG is bad for us celiac's and I've heard that it is not bad for us. Does anyone here know. It would help us with our son.

If you google MSG and health risks you will find a great deal of information about it. In my opinion it is not a good thing for anybody at anytime. It is an excitotoxin, it stimulates the brain to send messages that say "eat, eat, eat" and studies have linked it to obesity and alzheimers. :(

Perhaps you have already done this though. :)

I started having problems with MSG in my thirties and began avoiding it, I was also avoiding wheat then because it gave me problems too. <_<

It is hidden many places you wouldn't expect to find it, gelatin capsules, the auxigro they spray on organic crops and under different names on packaging.

It seems some celiacs are able to have everything except gluten but others of us have other problems and tolerate less. I can't eat grains at all at this point.

As to whether or not there is a connection between Celiac and MSG, I don't know. It's a good question though and I will be interested to see what others say. :)

If you're asking whether MSG is gluten-free, it is.

I always thought i had a problem with MSG but now I am not sure. I am about to try eating it again now that I have been wheat free. But I do know many other people who are unable to eat MSG & no food allergies or digestive issues what so ever. I actually posted a topic similar to this a few weeks ago if you would like to read the responses on that post also.

My experience with Msg is volatile. It goes right through me! :lol: It is a much worse reaction than when I get glutened.

I cannot tolerate MSG at all. I had beef jerky one day... it was pretty much beef and msg and spices.... i was sick for 2 days. It is a reaction completely seperate from gluten though.

I pretty much agree that MSG is bad for everyone, and so is Artfical Sweeteners. I only physically react to MSG and Splenda, but I avoid them all out of worry for my health. I do occasionally have a diet pepsi, but I know it's bad for me, and keep them far and few between. I really worry about the long term damage it does.

I'm not going to get myself in trouble again on this topic, but celiac or not - everything you put in your mouth is going to cause some action to take place. I think MSG is a bad idea. I don't mess with it anymore. :)

STAY AWAY FROM MSG!!! It is bad stuff. I am new to being gluten-free but have been avoiding MSG for 10 years now because of my rheumatoid arthritis & reactive arthritis. It destroys your joints and messes with your nerves. Now I am learning that there is a connection to celiac and rheumatoid arthritis. If I ever eat it, I am in GREAT pain for days! My pain medication does not even help.

In stuff that I have read it messes with kids who have Autism.

The MSG contained in two corndogs sent me into anaphallactic shock in my thirties and I've avoided it since. But that was an allergic reaction, not a Celiac reaction.

I do know American MSG hits me much worse than Asian MSG does. I don't know what the difference is although my Asian friends tell me that they don't like American MSG because it tastes "sweet". I never had a problem with "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" only American Food. Again, an Asian friend told me that Americans use too much when they add it to a dish.

p.s. MSG and NutraSweet (aspartame) are chemically related and I've read that if you react to one, odds are you will react to the other. A Neurologist told me that these two chemicals send her many migraine patients. NutraSweet gives me migraines.

I discovered recently that MSG triggers migraines for me. Last time I ate at a Chinese restaurant (before going gluten-free), I'm fairly certain they used MSG, since I got a terrible headache afterwards and had intestinal problems as well. MSG can be a trigger for IBS symptoms. Now I avoid it completely. I've just heard too much bad stuff about it and know it makes me feel awful.

MSg gives me worse stomach pains and more than eating gluten and i don't eat gluten. It is so difficult to not eat msg since it is hidden by so many other names. IF you go to the truth in labeling website you can find a list of the different names it is listed under. I was making lemon merangue pie for friends, no pie for me but thought I could bring some of the pie filling for me because it was gluten free. I ate 2 bites and within a 10 minutes had a stomach ache and more. then I looked on my list and oops there was one on the people that are very sensitive to msg list. . I wish you luck with avoiding it. It is not an easy task. the FDA could make it easy by not making it so easy to hide it by other names but....

thank you so much for this post. I was feeling a bit isolated. That is my problem as well, at least I know within 10-30 minutes that I ate msg so it is easier to figure out the culprit. I'd rather eat a cracker than msg, but of course try to deo neither. The msg seems to be harder to avoid than the gluten.

      Yaya, from the JAMA study you refer to: "Taking 60,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity." No one on this forum is recommending  taking anywhere near that amount. We're talking about 5-10,000IU daily.
