Sore Throat, Funny Feeling In My Ears

Hello everyone,

Im quite new to this board, having posted a couple of times in recent months with quests for help with my test results, and youve all been great and helpful, I wondered if I could ask for your opinions again.

Long and short of it is that I have been unwell for 9 months after a bout of diarrhoea, then joint pain, with diagnosed anemia, hypothyroidism, urticaria. I had a mild history of digestive issues prior but it was something i had lived with.

I have been waiting two months to see a gastro who was recommended to me, who is experienced with diagnosing (or not ) celiac disease/gluten sensitivity. The appointment was then delayed another month so I decided to have a trial week gluten free just out of interest to see how my body reacts - knowing that I would eat gluten again after the week to ensure that I was glutened when I see this doc.

Anyhow.. heres my q...I noticed even in this short period of gluten free that I felt far less bloated after meals, and I had less weak stools.

However..the waves of tiredness, and my sore throat persisted. I find this interesting..the sore throat tends to come in the evenings after my main meal and I have ear involvement with it - my ears feel a little..well like theyre open to the world if that makes sense. They dont hurt, itch ever so slightly deep inside. Sometimes my hearing cuts out like im underwater. I can hear but theres this muffled quality to it.

So now Im wondering... if I could have a corn issue too. I ate more corn during this period since I ate more "gluten alternative" products.

Im thinking now on trying a few days of no gluten and no "gluten alternatives" - just simple rice and veggies.

What I would like to ask is.. anyone out there who has a gluten and corn issue.. and if yes, are your reactive symptoms the same after you eat both?

thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

I have a sensitivity to corn, in addition to being gluten intolerant. The symptoms from eating corn is similar, but not as severe as what happens when I eat gluten. In addition to the stomach cramps and diahrera, I also experience itchy skin and itchy ears, and the inside of my ears do swell up a bit but I never have any reduction in my hearing.

Your one week experiment does rather point to problems with gluten. Fatigue may take longer than a week to clear up, and if you're eating another allergen like corn, that may also contribute to it.

If I were you, rather than continue to avoid gluten and risk messing up the test results and getting a false negative, I'd just go corn-free and see if the ear issues clear up some. It's actually more difficult to eat corn free than gluten-free, and you'll definitely want to visit the Avoiding Corn Forum for help with that. PM me if you have any questions about it.

Remember, IF you want to be officially diagnosed with celiac, you must continue to eat gluten.

The ear thing sounds very familiar to me. I have been getting it for years... my hearing can get muffled in one or both ears. I always thought it was due to ear wax or changes in weather pressure. I never thought to consider that it might be a reaction to food! I will have to check what I have eaten recently the next time it happens.

I've had the ear thing on and off for years--my doctors call it eustacian tube dysfunction. Mine is caused by allergies--most likely seasonal and my cat.

It's been particularly bad since last spring, and I'm taking Claritin and a Rx steroid nasal spray. Interesting that you should question corn--I had been off corn for 2 years, and have recently been trying it again. I don't know if that has someting to do with the continual nature of this.

I would suggest you check with an allergist :)

I have noticed more joint pain and swelling when eatin corn. It took me a couple of months to figure this out since I kept glutening myself. I have been corn free for only a couple of weeks and the swelling in my hands and the redness is going away. Have a similar problem with rice and MSG both make me hurt all over but the corn seems to only affect my fingers.

Thank you for the warning. I get blood tests twice a year to check where I stand with the vitamins I regularly take, so I appreciate the extra reminder. I know some vitamins don’t build up but now I will watch the B6 for sure.

I think you would do well to take a high potency B-complex such that you get more balanced dosage across the spectrum of B vitamins. They work in concert.

Around 5 years ago I visited Tokyo, and luckily had my sister in law with me who is from there, otherwise it would have been more difficult. The bottom line is that there are tons of naturally gluten-free food options there, but you need to be able to communicate your needs to restaurant staff. Here is a gluten-free restaurant card for American visitors in Tokyo. It includes a request for a gluten-free meal and mentions common gluten-containing ingredients to avoid, like soy sauce and miso. English: Thank you. Japanese:   You can also download the Google Translate app, and besides being able to help you speak with people there about this, it has a camera app that translates Japanese text to English in your camera, so you can use it when shopping in a supermarket.

Be careful about how much B6 you take, as it can cause issues if you take too much of it over time.
