I take them - to me they help alleviate a lot of the bloating, gas and reflux. My primary physician is an md and holistic doc too. I take a "multi" enzyme 2x's a day and keep tropical papaya tablets (all are allergen/gluten free) for meal/snack times if necessary. The older we get the less enzymes are bodies produce - and I'd much rather take these.

Hope this helps!

aascr: Can you tell us the name of the enzymes and papaya tabs, or is that against the rules? Ruth S.

The best Digestive Enzymes I have used are Brands like Solgar. Much better than any of the ones that have things like papaya and ginger etc. You can certainly tell the difference after a big meal.

I took "Udo's Choice" digestive plant enzyme blend for over a year continuing almost 7 months after going gluten free UNTIL I noticed that 'barley malt extract' was listed under 'other' ingredients. I'm so glad I eliminated one more source of gluten contamination. I've been mostly gluten/dairy/soy free for several months, so my digestion is fine now without those enzymes. If anyone read my earlier post on this board about those enzymes and tried that brand, I must apologize and hope they read the label before taking them. :( I'm sorry that I unknowingly recommended a contaminated brand of enzymes. :o

I use Wholezyme found at Whole Foods and Tropical Papaya (Country Life)

also found @ Whole Foods - don't know what I'd do w/o that store!

I have used enzymes now since going gluten-free for good in January. I was very ill after my two month gluten challenge and could hardly digest anything except rice and small amounts of chicken. Certainly not fruits and veggies! Enzymes really saved me.

My favorite is Pioneer brand Digestive Enzymes and Herbs. They are clearly marked gluten-free and work well for me.

I recently was given some samples of Fast Food Enzymes by Natural Balance. They are NOT actually made from fast food! I think the name will certainly turn some people off. Anyhow, I checked with the company and they said they are gluten and dairy free. I tried them today and I have not had any problems.

God bless,

Mariann

Thanks to all of you who listed the enzymes you take . I hope I will be able to find one or more of them. There is a small health food store within 20 miles of my little town. Perhaps she can order some. I rarely get to larger centers. Will check into this next time I get to "town". Ruth S.

Scott makes a good point about the prednisone. It has a general suppressing effect on the immune system. Don't misunderstand me. In view of your husband's several autoimmune afflictions, it would seem to be an appropriate medication therapy but it will likely invalidate endoscopy/biopsy test results for celiac disease.

I also want to mention that using prednisone would likely also make the endoscopy results invalid. This steroid will cause gut healing and could mask the damage caused by celiac disease.

This sounds to me like histamine intolerance. Some foods have more or less histamine. processed or aged meats, fermented food like yoghurt or kimchi and bread (yeast), spinach, eggplant and mushroom are high in histamine. Other foods like tomatoes are histamine liberators, they encourage your mast cells to release histamine, which can also trigger the reactions you describe, flu like symptoms, joint pain, urinary tract irritation, rash, stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea & fatigue. I had liver pain like you describe, as part of the intolerance is usually a sluggish liver that makes processing all the histamine difficult. There are multiple possible root causes of histamine intolerance, usually it’s a symptom of something else. In my case, leaky gut (damaged gut wall)caused by undiagnosed celiac, but for others it’s leaky gut caused by other things like dysbiosis. Some people also experience histamine intolerance due to mould exposure or low levels of DAO (the enzyme that breaks down histamine in the gut). I’d try a low histamine diet & if that doesn’t improve symptoms fully, try low oxalate too. As others have suggested, supplements like vitamin d, b, l-glutamine to support a healthy gut & a good liver support supplement too. If you’re in a histamine flare take vitamin c to bowel tolerance & your symptoms will calm down (avoid if you find you have oxalate intolerance though). Best of luck

@GeoPeanut, milk is one of the better sources of iodine. Iodine is known to exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. Many people find that a low iodine diet helps them avoid dermatitis herpetiformis outbreaks. So, maybe the fact that you have limited your dairy intake of late is helping with that.

Hi, I'm new here. Sorry for your troubles.herenis a thought to mull over. I recently was diagnosed with celiac disease,  and hashimoto's and dermatitis herpetiformis after getting covid 19. I eat butter, and 1/2 cup of Nancy's yogurt daily. I stopped all other dairy and  dermatitis herpetiformis is gone! I also make grass fed beef bone broth to help with myopathy that has occurred.
