Sometime Just Feel Like...

Have you ever had the feeling that you wanted to somehow, magically, make someone else a celiac (or other food allergy) and then give that food so they understand? I know it's really mean and everything, but sometimes they just don't get it!

I've seriously had people tell me it was psychological, or try and feed to it me to see what would happen! One person has even said she was allergic to everything but brown rice and greens, but through meditation (and a bunch of other stuff like that) she can eat everything now... right... you had true allergies! And it

Yeah it's a bummer! Especially when it's family doing/saying those things! Sadly I think people who do/say things like that aren't going to change and I just ignore it now! It still sucks though!

I'm totally with you. My dad (and I'm 39 years old) always acted as though I was just being difficult or something, exaggering things. Then he got diagnosed with it too (DH - the skin instead of the digestive tract) and now he acts as though no one understands him. Just two months ago he was harassing me. The irony is, he's not as careful as I am, so he's already glutened me since he went gluten free (he insists on eating Quaker Oats, even though I've told him over and over they have gluten). Arg.

So now I've gone raw. I figure, if you're going to be a weirdo, just go all out. Raw food all the time, that's my motto. I'm taking raw food to Thanksgiving dinner. Ha.

Good luck.

p.s. sorry to barge in on teen section. I was a teen once...long ago.....

Stargate,

I get it! It is actually really funny because 2 of my friends are now going gluten free because they are having possible Celiac related health problems! They were the most unsupportive about my Celiac dx, but in time they came around. I am not saying your friends will do this, but it was just really funny when they called me for advice on going gluten free!!

Bully4you,

I am raw too!!! I agree, if you're going to go all out, may as well do it 100%...right!!!?? I had really good raw lasagna tonight! I am able to eat things I thought I never would have been able to eat again...like lasagna!

i don't think that it's that they're being mean, but they're just curious. i get tired of it too. then i feel like i want to bite their head off or something. but sometimes, people do want to be mean, i have it happen to me all the time. they taunt me with food and try to make me eat it. don't get deprresed though, i can get depressed enough for the both of us.

you like stargate???? i'm obsessed with stargate!! stargate SG-1 or Atlantis?!? i like SG-1 best. i'm happy that sam joined atlantis, but i hate the fact that they totally changed her character. she's so different... sad.

who's your favorite person?! i like daniel jackson and colonel shepard.

okay, i'm done freaking out about stargate.

.::STARGIRL::.

ps. what other shows do you watch??? have you ever heard about Eureka or Journeyman??

ok. i'm done now.

HilaBean Newbie

Trust me i've been there too. Imagine if its YOUR DOCTOR telling you that its in you head. Thats just messed up dont you think? But yeah that happened to me. I finally found out that i'm gluten intolerant (I dont even know if i'm flat out celiac for fear that nothing's going to be covered by insurance) from a natropathic doctor after years of chronic illness.

Some people are just ridiculous though. They don't get that eating gluten can kill people who have celiac. Thanksgiving was a nightmare this year. :/

Stargate-geek Newbie

Ack I know! Thanksgiving was a bit of a nightmare. My dad works in the medical field. Every year the clinic does thanksgiving together. Which is great, they all know about celiac (well, most of them) and watch what they put in food for my mom and me.... but they don't think "can't use the same spoon' or 'Be careful about the flour on the counter" so I got glutened... <_<

Stargirl: You could say I'm obsessed, but that'd be an under statement ;) I originally have Atlantis, but now i like it more. My favorite characters are Carson (*tear*) and Rodney, then Radek.

Yes, I love Eureka too, haven't seen the other one.

I know how you all feel. It was kind of nice last weekend to be visiting with relatives with two children with allergies. They actually GOT it. My nephew's wife was forwarding recipes for me to check out, listing ingredients of products she wanted to use, and the like.

I'm a Stargate SG-1 fan too. I don't seem to watch Atlantis as much. I think I have to get some complete seasons from Netflix, because I think I'm missing some of the story arc.

My daughter is studying Egyptology in college now (she also was homeschooled). I kid her that she will have to use Daniel Jackson's ideas for one of her theses :D She just wants to find a guy in the field that looks like him  It is funny how they work so hard to find names that have some ancient Egyptian basis. Like Naqada? The name of a predynastic culture.

Have you two fans ever watched Babylon 5? I think that is my favorite show ever. It is something you do have to watch in order. The five-year story arc was largely planned in advance, characters change, etc.

Stargate-geek Newbie

Haven't watched babylon5 , but it's on my netflix list!

I homeschool too. It's great! I can write fanfiction and stuff for English! :) I start college soon though, my major will be 'get into Medical School'

loco-ladi Contributor

First yes here is yet another adult bursting into the teen section

Stargate this happens to us all at some point, people are generally ignorant about anything not directly effecting them.... hopefully your close friends are not like this.

Become a teacher and find a way to explain to those closest to you how this diet works... the rest of the people will either come around after a while or not, just be careful and realize you are probly healthier than they are!

Oh, and stargate SG-1... great show when I can watch it.....

atlantis, havent watched yet

babylon-5 started in the middle so it made no sense but may watch a few of the begining ones and see now that I know!

hathor Contributor

Ooops, I missed the "teenagers only" part. :( I usually look at the titles of new posts instead of looking at particular boards.

I can see how Babylon 5 would make no sense in the middle. There is quite a bit of back story. Just knowing who all these people (and assorted aliens) are, how the races have dealt with each other in the past, personal histories, plot developments, etc., etc. really have to be seen to be absorbed. I started watching when it was into the second season. Thank goodness for Netflix!

Aww man you got glutened? That happened to me too... They made 2 different kinds of turkeys, One that was marinated without gluten, one that was cooked with teriyaki sauce. They put them on the same platter. *headslap* I did have gluten-free cornbread though... And pie. yay pie.

My dad, of all people, gets the fact that I cant eat gluten the least of every one. He gets toast crumbs in the butter so that i cant use it, He uses my toaster for his gluteny things, and he wont even touch my food just because its gluten free. its obnoxious.

Stargate-geek Newbie

they made three turkeys, two of which we gluten-free. One was a Cajun spiced deep fried one (in new oil, so i know it wasn't that) and then a plain just-the-bird turkey. I can't think what it was though. I had turkey, some mashed potatoes (asked what was in them, and they were real potatoes too!) a rice dish (homemade, they knew what went in it, it was clean) artichoke dip, which was gluten-free, and the pie WE made.... so idea how i got glutened....

My family is good about the gluten-free, the problem is when other people come over! We always scoop out the butter, then spread it, stuff like that. We have a four slot toaster, my sister labeled it 'Gluten free' and 'real' LOL She's the one that refuses to eat the gluten-free food though, she says it tastes weird... when you haven't had gluten (on purpose) in 6 years, it tastes just fine ;)

same here! sad you got gluted, i haven't been for a while.

*tear for carson too*

i like rodney. he's such a geek and so self obsessed. it's funny cause everyone on stargate reminds me of my friends...let's see, i would have a friend for rodney, tayla (sp?), sam, daniel, and i'd probably be vala. i look like her too. *laugh*

I know what it's like want to give people celiac and then make them try to deal with it. My best friend(sorta...) had major back surgery for her sculiosis (bad spelling) almost a year ago (just about recovered even though she acts likes she should still be pampered!) and is competetive about everything! She is always trying to prove that her disease is worse that celiac (can you say stupid!) ! Anyway, at school when we are eating lunch together, she persists in shaking her crumbs near and/or on my gluten-free food even though I tell her that I get really sick! Then she makes fun of me! So just saying, I understand completely.

I understand completally, Stargate. It doesn't seem fair that we're the ones stuck with this weird disease. Others that don't have it don't seem to understand the pain or how many things gluten is in. i mean come on, we can't even have freaking lip gloss without checking it for wheat! my friends who i telll think i'm overreacting for complaining about it...they just think i cant eat bread...big whoop. but its so much more. its in spices, it holds me back from vacation, and delicious foods like cake. sometimes i want people to have celiac so they could understand that im not overreacting and so im not all alone.

Gluten is in everything! Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease I had no clue! I have the problems with the crumbs too. My step-dad keeps his bread right by my gluten-free food and he always gets crumbs on my stuff <_< It can be really annoying because he doesn't understand at all. Every time I confront him about the crumbs he rolls his eyes like I'm paranoid and blowing my illness out of proportion! Sometimes it can be frustrating but you just have to keep doing what's best for you.

I am super sensitive and celiac for sure. I am extremely careful what I put in my mouth as I am allergic to wheat, soy, eggs, yeast, gluten. So, it's tough, but I am ultra careful what I put in my mouth and on my skin, etc. I still seemed to get sick at least once a month or every two months and am usually ill for 3-7 days depending on the contamination. I am anaphalactic with wheat. I have a home based business, but I'm wondering how people juggle celiac vs. a job? Do many of you work outside the home and are you extreme celiac or just have intolerances? Sorry to sound so stupid, just wondering how people do it? I used to be an HR Manager and would like to go back but I am feeling like a freak and I still get very sick so I am extremely discouraged thinking I may not ever be able to return to work? I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this....thanks!

In case you decide to go the route of a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood test or biopsy: Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

Kosher salt is not usually iodized. Shortly after starting GFD in 2014, I realized I wasn't getting enough iodine.  Growing up in the 50's and 60's we ate bread that used iodine as a dough modifier so each slice had about 100 mcg of iodine.  A sandwich and glass of milk supplied 300 mcg a day.  In the 70's they stopped using iodine as a conditioner in the US.  Then everyone got scared of milk.  The US intake of iodine dropped 50% since 1974.  Prescriptions of Thyroxine for hypothyroid disease doubled in the same period.  I tried using iodized salt and seaweed and took an expensive thyroid supplement but it wasn't enough.  In 2014 I had a sebaceous cyst (third eye blind).  The previous 6 cysts on my face had all drained and healed with no problem back in the 1990,s.  One on my check had sugically removed. They are genetic from my mom and my brother and son also get them in the same places.  This one I did not have surgery for because I wanted a bellweather to moniter healing.  It did not start healing until I started until 10 years when I started taking 600 mcg of Liquid Iodine a year ago Nov 2023. Lot's of comment about how it was offputting and maybe cancer, it was deep, down to the bone, but I can be obstenant.  Now it is scabbing over and healing normally.  Vision is returning to my right eye (glucoma), musle tone in my chest was the first sign of improvement.  For healing, iodine breaks down defective and aging cells to make room for new growth. I take Liquid Iodine drops from Pipingrock.com but there is also Strong Iodine and Lugols Solution. 50 mcg/drop a dropper full is 12 drops, 600 mcg.,  usually I put it in a can of Red Bull, My brother, son and his family also started taking it. https://www.pipingrock.com/iodine/liquid-iodine-2-fl-oz-59-ml-dropper-bottle-14690 390 drops for $8.  They ship internationally if you can't find it locally. It the US the Safe Tolerable Upper Limit is 1000 mcg a day.  In Japan it is 3000 mcg a day.  The Japanese traditional diet has 50% less breast cancer, nicer hair, skin and nails, and in the 80's the US educational system dropped down comared to the rest of the world while Japanese kids moved up to the top.  Low iodine affects brain fog. According to most education rankings, Japan generally has a higher education rating than the United States, with Japan often ranking within the top 10 globally while the US usually places slightly lower.  In the 1960s, the United States was near the top of the world for education, especially for young people.  About why iodine was removed from medicint: The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect: Crying Wolf? About why over 40% of us are vitamin D deficient: Mayo Proceedings,  Vitamin D Is Not as Toxic as Was Once Thought:

Current "gluten challenge" recommendations are the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) daily leading up to the day of the biopsy.

Thank you for your input!  I would really like to know if I have celiac disease because you need make sure you are not getting any cross contamination due to cancer concerns.  I guess I need to start with a knowledgeable Gastroenterologist. Thank you again!
