Im new to this board....I have had celiac disease for 2 years now. Finding this message board has really helped me alot. Before I found this site I felt so alone. Anyways, I am 18 years old and just recently moved out on my own. I am having a really hard time finding the money to cover my diet?!? There has to be some kind of state assistance for people with celiac disease? Dose anyone know if we can get disability, food stamps, or medical assistance because of having Celiac Disease? By the way I live in Wisconsin, but please respond even if you dont know specificly about wisconsin. Thanks a bunch!

-Jennifer

Hey Jennifer, food stamps are determined by your income vs. expenses, so you would have to stop by the local office and pick up the app and fill it out and they will go over it with you and let you know what you qualify for. It is almost impossible to get on disability, even when your condition is not going to get any better, and with Celiac, we can live normal lives if eat right so I can pretty much assure you that isn't going to fly with them. I don't know if there is any assistance out there, but I haven't come turned any up and I haven't been able to work a regular job in several years (have only been gluten-free for a few months, hopefully that will be changing soon!) and have been struggling beyond belief and now to find out that I have to spend MORE money on food.... it is enough to kill a person, but at least there is hope.

Hope someone else has some better news for you!

@CeliacPsycho246, You might try cutting out dairy.  Some of us react to Casein, the protein in dairy, the same as to gluten.

Yep, the edit window times out very quickly. It's okay. I got a good laugh out of it.

I hope you meant "pen pal" instead of "paypal".
