I've noticed a few people looking for support in the Fresno area and would like to get information on starting a group. I've been dagnosed for almost a year and would like to share my experience and also receive the benefit of other peoples experience. Can someone direct me to a starting point?

Hi, Glueless! Mark Duran and Shannon Davis are self-employed "consultants for dietary modification," dba "Gluten Alternatives" in Fresno, California. Although I've never worked for them and am not trying to get any business for them (for I've never even met them!), I am introducing you to what I know about them as a possible "starting point." Duran and Davis have given a monthly talk at the Whole Foods Market (WFM) at Palm and Shaw avenues. Please call WFM to determine the time they'll be giving their next talk, and perhaps I'll see you there!

In the meantime, if you'd like to share your email address with me, I'd be happy to send you a gluten-free grocery shopping guide I've been writing.

Hi,

You can contact the Celiac Sprue Association to start a support group or be a resource for your area. I have a group in Manteca and have had people call me from the Fresno area or drive to my meetings so Fresno really could use a group. I think there used to be a group but no longer.

Hi everyone... kind of desperate here... getting married next March and having a ton of trouble finding a baker who will work with me and my gluten-free needs. Some have suggested a separate grooms cake for us to cut at the reception, but I would really like to be able to eat the real cake at my own wedding. Any advice or suggestions?

Since summer began, I've been looking for a physical place where a celiac support group could meet in Fresno, California. For now, we have only metaphysical places. These are two Yahoo! discussion groups (Open Original Shared Link): one is MultipleFoodAllergySupportGroup; and the other is glutenfreefresno.

Whole Foods Market's corporate web site contains a statement that the meeting rooms at its grocery stores are available for such a support group. Though making numerous contacts of the WFM on Shaw Avenue, I've been unsuccessful in learning about the rental procedure, much less securing it for an organizational meeting. It would appear that a private-for-profit organization has gotten exclusive rights to use the room there. We can discuss this matter off line, if you'd like.

Let's just find ourselves another meeting place! Options for gluten-sensitive diners abound between River Park (W side of Blackstone Ave.) and River Park Shopping Center (E side of Blackstone Ave., a.k.a. Villagio). In-N-Out Burger, which has a location N of River Park Shopping Center (NW corner of Blackstone & Nees), is a low-price option. Recently, I noticed that construction is now underway in the lot adjacent to that In-N-Out. It will be a Chick-Fil-A ( Open Original Shared Link ), whose menu is also on the frugal side, as is Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers. The nearest Wendy's location is tucked in the middle of River Park, north of Barnes & Noble (312 W. Cromwell Ave.; phone: (559) 435-9685).

Gluten-sensitive diners have two other, though pricier options nearby: P. F. Chang's (Open Original Shared Link) on the SE corner of Blackstone and Nees avenues. To the west, across Blackstone, is Elephant Bar Restaurant with its "Lo' Carb Platters" intended for Atkins dieters, but gluten-free just the same. These platters may be low in carbs but are not low in price: Grilled Fresh Fish Platter, market price; Fire Grilled Beef Tri-Tip, $10.50; Center Cut New York Steak, $17.95. (Too pricey for me, folks!) Each is served with saut

Hi, I live in berkeley which is a drive for you but.... there is a fantastic gluten-free bakery in Oakland.

It is called mariposa bakery on Telegraph ave. They have real cakes which are premade

and frozen. One is vanilla with a raspberry layer in between the layers and the other is

chocolate with a ganache of chocolate in between the layers. They may not be fancy-smancy

wedding cake looking but they are bakery cake looking in appearance and they are

groovy-good.

I also have wanted a support group in Fresno for some time. I have talked to several people about this and I'm willing to help organize a group. I think the first things we need to do is to get a list of potential places and see how many people would be in the group, when we have an approximate number of people, we can see which one of the places would be best. We need to also check if these places would allow food there. I know of some gluten free food companies that send support groups samples and items for their refreshments at their meetings.

This is just a few things for us to think about. What are your opinions about my ideas?

      According to research, consuming gluten can potentially trigger sudden mood swings and increased irritability in children, particularly those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, making them more likely to have tantrums or display behavioral issues; this is because gluten can trigger an immune response in the body, potentially impacting brain function and neurotransmitter levels.  When my son was diagnosed in 1976 when he was weaned his doctor told us that at 5 years old his kindergarden teacher would beg us to put him on Ritalin.  And so it did happen.  My son was on Ritalin though high school.  In the morning he was a devil who could not put on his socks. Half an hour after the morning dose he was an angel wanting to help mom get ready.  Talk about Jekyll and Hyde! Dr Danel Amen could be a good resource for you.

      Yes, it certainly can! My daughter has a reaction from just playing with Playdough. She doesn't get GI symptoms at first, just psychological mostly. It can get really bad. It's like night/day behavior. My daughter is eight, but started showing signs around 6.

      The easiest way to remember the difference between the cholesterol types is HDL;   H=healthy equals healthy (omega 3, 7, limit 6 & 9 MCFA'S =Medium Chain Fatty Acids. 3= coconut oil, 7= sunflower oil, avocado. The higher your HDL the healthier you are & less likely to experience strokes, clogged arteries Etc. You can even use cold expeller pressed coconut oil on your skin and that is the best kind of coconut oil to eat as well. You want your HDL much higher than your LDL, it will help you stay healthy.   LDL;    L=Lousy. Meat fats, processed fats.  The higher your LDL is the more likely you will have strokes, clogged artery is, heart disease, fatty liver.   Then there's lipids... they are the culprit to be blamed for many heart attacks and things like that they are very small round particles that transport fats. You can have a low overall cholesterol reading and most of it be healthy cholesterol and have a ton of lipids and there's nothing you can do to change the lipid count. High number of lipids is very dangerous.   I'm going on statins is extremely dangerous if you ask me it's just completely my opinion, because I have seen so many of my elderly friends bleed to death internally because of the statins. I mean you wouldn't take all the oil and grease out of your car or a motorcycle and then try to drive it that way would you? You see that's what statins do they remove all of your bodies fats and it doesn't matter whether it's healthy fats or a lousy fats. It removes all of them and then your body can't function properly. You have to have fats to keep your skin supple and to stay warm. Your body also needs fats to digest & process certain nutrients, amino acids & vitamins.   Your brain is composed of fat so is that something you really want to remove with a pill every morning and night?   The thing about statins is that they also make the blood vessels and capillaries permeable. So this is how my friends who were on cardiac medication for a long time and statins ended up bleeding internally to death.   If you want to make sure that your heart is healthy, take odorless garlic at night and magnesium, vitamin K & calcium.

      Yes.  Proportionately a small piece to a toddler is like a whole slice to an adult.  This is an important clue.  She was doing well, accidentally ate gluten and later the old behavior returned. I remember reading posts here of people reacting to a kiss from someone who had just eaten gluten. Recent research indicates that 40% of first degree relatives of someone with Celiac have undiagnosed Celiac Disease.  Father, mother, siblings.  There is a whole list of symtoms of "silent celiac".  Here is an article of symptoms possibly mistaken for other causes than Celiac Disease.  When I finally stopped gluten at 63 years old, I counted 19 things that improved, including lifelong mouthbreathing.  I never smelled bad things, so I as a kid, I learned to respond to the other kid's response in order to not seem weird. I really recommend you pursue testing for all the family if you can, and the whole family following GFD.  It is difficult at first, but the benefits will be worth it.
